ALPORT SYNDROME

It is a genetic disorder characterized by end stage kidney disease and hearing loss. Alport syndrome can also affect the eyes, though the changes do not affect sight, except when changes to the lens occur in life. Blood in urine is universal. It is caused by an inherited defect in type IV collagen that is needed for the normal functioning of ears, eyes and kidneys. The symptoms include: 1. Eye changes 2. Blood in urine 3. Hearing loss 4. Leiomyomatosis - of the esophagus and tracheobronchial tree

HOW IS ALPORT SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?

The diagnosis can be made by the following tests: 1. Biopsy of the kidneys or skin 2. Family history of end stage renal disorders 3. Blood tests 4. Genetic testing 5. CT and MRI

HOW IS ALPORT SYNDROME TREATED?

Alport syndrome is also called as inhibited nephritis
