Dietary Adjustment is The Best Solution for Constipated Child

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Diploma In Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician, Delhi
Dietary Adjustment is The Best Solution for Constipated Child

Constipation causes a lot of discomfort to children. A lot of factors are responsible for constipation among children.

Some of them are:

  1. Deliberate Withholding: Often children may consciously avoid visiting the toilet, which may make them feel constipated. This may be due to embarrassment, especially in public spaces or they might be too engaged in playing to not go to the toilet, altogether. Some children do it out of fear when a previous toilet experience has been particularly painful.
  2. Illness and Medication: Infections and illnesses, especially ones pertaining to the stomach cause the child to become constipated. Many medicines and supplements also affect the digestive system and can lead to constipation.
  3. Diet: This is the primary cause of constipation in children. If the child's diet has low water and fibre content and heavily features sugar and processed foods, stool becomes hard and bowel movement gets restricted.

Treatment for constipation in children:

Constipation in children is treated differently than in adults as their diets and patterns of bowel movement are dissimilar. The primary treatments for constipation in children are:

  1. Dietary Adjustment - Making changes to the child's diet by including high fibre foods (such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals, etc.) can help cure constipation. Compelling the child to intake ample fluids in the form of water or milk is also necessary. Sugary drinks must be avoided.
  2. Stool softeners and laxatives - The administration of bowel movement enhancing medication is the simplest way of treating constipation in children. There are various kinds of stool softeners and laxatives that are safe for children and must always be used under the supervision of a paediatrician.

But I'm confused about polio dosage, because the hospital authority not satisfied me that, whether they gave any polio dosage like hepatitis B or bcg etc or not! So please give some of your valuable suggestion.

Polio, BCG and Hepatitis are all different vaccinations. They should have mentioned it in your vaccination card whether its given. If you are still not sure better get another dose of the vaccination. There will no harm in giving extra dose even if it has been goven previously but do not miss vaccination.

Dear Sir, Please check whether she has received vaccine or immunoglobins. If she has taken vaccine (it contains hbsag) it will show hbs ag positive till antibodies develop, repeat hbsag and antihbs antibodies after 3 months. Please consult a hepatologist or gastroenterologist for assessment and management Regards.

Clubfoot denotes a condition where a newborn's foot or feet appear to be rotated internally at the ankle. In case this is left untreated, the person may appear to walk on their ankles or the sides of their feet. This can be diagnosed by doctors immediately at birth or even before that. Its important to get treatment done as there are chances of further complications.

Antibiotics are to be given after proper diagnosis. They are not the drugs for all types of diarrheas. Different etiologies need different treatment. I typically use zinc and ors in appropriate doses unless cause is found out.

Motor Tics - How Can We Prevent It?

Motor Tics - How Can We Prevent It?

Motor tics are generally experienced by children, and the symptoms can last up to one year. This disorder is characterised by brief and uncontrolled spasm like motions which are also accompanied by screams and other outbursts. If the physical and vocal tics come together for each attack, then the condition is known as Tourette Syndrome. Motor tics may occur due to problems in the functioning of the neurotransmitters in the child’s brain. These are chemicals that are usually responsible for transmitting signals throughout the brain, and a malfunction can lead to serious issues. Here are a few Homeopathic ways of dealing with this disorder.

Selective Treatment: Homeopathy will provide a form of ad hoc care that can help in treating the various symptoms that are associated with these tics. The symptoms include obsessive compulsive disorder as well as the tendency of exhibitionism. Also, the mechanical repetition of actions with head jerking movements and lip biting as well as wincing are some of the main symptoms that one will experience in such cases. While most of these symptoms tend to vanish as one progresses towards adulthood, it has been found that Ignata and Cuprum Metallicum are some of the Homeopathic medicines that can help in treating these symptoms, as well as painful facial tics. Agaricus Muscarius can also help in treating the symptoms of motor tics.

Prevention: The point of Homeopathy medication is also to prevent the occurrence of such tics. Cina 15 CH can be prescribed for this purpose along with Zinc Metallicum. Also, these medicines will help in treating the anxiety that the child may feel when suffering from this condition. Further, many Homeopath doctors will recommend and administer a Hyoscyamus based treatment to deal with this aspect of the condition. Hysteria and violent movements can also be prevented with the help of Staphysagria.

Involuntary Movements: The treatment of involuntary movements felt as a part of this condition can take place with the help of Homeopathic medicines like Sepia, China, Zinc and Lycopodium. A Gelasium-based treatment can also be prescribed in case the tics are accompanied by violent head movements and hysterical fits.

Visit to a Doctor: For most Homeopathic treatments, especially for conditions like these, it is important that you visit the doctor for physical examination. Based on your symptoms, the doctor will provide the right dosage and right treatment. Also its important to monitor the progress so that the diseased can be managed. In some cases, if the symptoms cannot be contained by the medication, one may require immediate hospitalisation. The doctor may also check for symptoms related to Parkinson’s Disease, as many times tics are a symptom of this disease, especially when they are experienced by adults. In most cases, these patients react well to Homeopathy based treatment methods.
