Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Treatment uses low-voltage electrical current for pain management and relief. It is performed with battery powered electric stimulation machine where one connects the two electrodes from machine to the pain affected area of one's skin or a pressure point. It then creates a circuit of electrical impulses, which travels along the nerves. The patient experiences less pain when the current is passed. The electrical nerve stimulation by current from the electrodes sends signals to the brain that block normal pain signals and natural painkillers called endorphins are generated. It is used mostly to treat muscle, joint, or bone problems that occur with illnesses such as osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia. It has been extremely effective for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, or bursitis. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Treatment is applied at high frequency more than 50 Hz with intensity below motor contraction (sensory intensity) or low frequency less than 10 Hz with an intensity that produces motor contraction. It is a non-invasive technique with very few side effects when compared to drug therapy. The most common complaint is an allergic type skin reaction due to the material of the electrodes, the conductive gel or the tape employed to hold It is used as a non-invasive nerve stimulation intended to reduce both chronic as well as acute pain.
