Cosmetic filling treatment is one of the most common methods to treat dental cavities and tooth decays. In this form of treatment the dentist usually removes the decayed portion of the tooth and then fills up the repair using a composite (white) filling material so as to arrest the decay from going deep down into the roots, which in turn could lead to serious dental infections. Patients and dentists these days prefer to go with a composite resin filling treatment because of two reasons. Firstly, it eliminates the need for tooth extraction, and secondly, the composite resin filling is a translucent, tough and durable plastic material that lends the repaired tooth a natural look. This form of treatment is usually done under local anaesthesia. Once the area around the tooth is numbed, the dentist drills a hole in the affected tooth to remove and clear it off the decay and cavity and then applies the filling material to "fill" up the empty space. With the filling applied, a laser light treatment is given to the filled up area so as to harden the filling material following which the excess material is filed, polished and shaped to give it the final restoration touch. Apart from the composite (white) filling, some dentists may also use silver amalgam filling that is prepared using different metals like copper, tin and mercury. Now this is one of the oldest and premier forms of filling material, but because of its metallic appearance people prefer to go with their composite counterparts. The entire process of dental filling takes about 45 minutes of time and is usually done in a single sitting.
