IM' NOW 38 my height is 5.7 feet my weight is 78 now I want to reduce my weight as soon as possible because of that I snoring very heavily even eating less I put on weight so pls suggest which is the effective way to reduce weight and stop snoring.

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in thenose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used. To reduce weight, perform yoga or do some physical exercises or go to a gym and work out. Avoid high caloried food like sweets, oil fried food, carbohydrate rich food. Take rotis or ragi balls and plenty of raw or cooked vegetables and fruits.

After menopause I have hearing loss in my right ear. Not able to hear from my right ear. Why it happened and what is the solution?

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Delhi
hearing loss happens due to lack of estrogen hormone, because after caesation of menopause can cause lower secretion of estrogen. Mostly hearing loss occurs in left ear after caesation of menopause of 4 years and in right ear after caesation of menopause of 5-6 yrs. In your case, loss is in right ear, normally it is due to lack of estrogen hormone. So get your ear checked and if possible take hormone therapy. There is a link between menopause and hearing loss, also aging can also play a significant role in reduced hearing, and many other causes are there for hearing loss. So avoid exposure to noisy areas, loud music etc. For better protection of your hearing. Also a healthy diet can save your hearing too.

I am 22 yrs old. There is a small hole in my ear drum since childhood. Is it can be treated without operation?

MS , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Hi lybrate-user. If it's a small hole in the drum, we could address it by minimally invasive procedure called fast plug myringoplasty. If the hole is little bigger, then we need to do a procedure called tympanoplasty.

Earache? before starting any treatment you require to have micro exam of ear. Also if nothing abnormal it may be neuralgia or referred pain of toothache or tonsillitis or any infective lesion in throat. Also sinus problem can give rise to ear ache. Proper cleaning with ear bud may help you.

Sinus problem occurs when there is problem in the aeration or obstruction to the drainage of sinuses due to allergy/ deviated septum/ infection. Cause can be find out by endoscopy and ct scan and the culprit can be treated accordingly. Steam inhalation will help u.

Having sores inside mouth and tongue and constipation what medicine should I take?

MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
Would you little elaborate like, when and how it started, how long, positions of ulcers, your personal habit of food, occupation - these may help to arrive at some diagnosis. What I can gather you are obese and possibly do not do any physical. What I suggest are: 1) Start brisk walking at least 5 km daily. Do physical exercise like abdominal crunches and all others. 2) Take plenty of oral fluid (plain water) on regular basis. 3) Take high fibre food regularly. 3) Stop animal protein for about a month and stop high fat diet forever. 4) Once or twice week Isogel Husk 3-4 tsp inthe evening with water and take about 300 ml of water immediately after that. Or Mucibeal 2 Tsp in the evening with water and same way followed by 300 ml of water. If your bowels are well clear twice a week, that is enough for your health. But avoid stool to get hard. Gradually withdraw Mucibeal as the condition is improved 5) Hexigel - can be applied locally on ulcers. Add fresh lemon juice at least of one lemon per day, in your diet list. 6) Vizylac - 1 cap twice daily after food for about two weeks.

Avoid salty and spicy food, avoid salt water gargling, avoid menthol peppermint and avoid vicks, start taking good fresh fruits and salads this will help you tokeep mouth hydrated hence there will be no infection in the mouth as mucus in mouth is very protective.

Dr, I have a pain in my throat for 2 days and as a result I feel difficult to talk at night and cold conditions and I do not think its the problem of cough. I feel pain on the left part of my throat while touching. I have both smoking and drinking habits (mild)

MD, MBBS

There may be some ulcer (like aphthous ulcer) at throat near vocal cords. It would heel by itself within 10-15 days. If it does not go within 15 days talk with me.
