आयुर्वेद ग्रंथ 'भावप्रकाश' कहता है कि 'लहसुन वृष्य स्निग्ध, ऊष्णवीर्य, पाचक,सारक,रस विपाक में कटु तथा मधुर रस युक्त, तीक्ष्ण भग्नसंधानक (टूटी हड्डी जोड़ने वाला), पित्त एवं रक्तवर्धक, शरीर में बल, मेधाशक्ति तथा आँखों के लिए हितकर रसायन है। यह हृदय रोग, जीर्ण रोग (ज्वरादि), कटिशूल, मल एवं वातादिक की विबंधता, अरुचि, काम, क्रोध, अर्श, कुष्ठ, वायु, श्वांस की तकलीफ तथा कफ नष्टकारी है।

मेहनतकश किसान-मजदूर तो लहसुन की चटनी, रोटी खाकर स्वस्थ और कर्मठ बने रहते हैं। यह कैंसर से लड़ने में खास उपयोगी है क्योंकि यह खाने -पीने की चीजों या प्रदूषण से शरीर में बनने वाले नाइट्रोसेमाइन के असर को कम करता है। हृदय रोग समेत कई अन्य रोगों में भी यह सुरक्षा कवच बन सकता है। इसे पूरे शरीर के लिए एक शक्तिशाली टॉनिक बताया गया है। पिछले महीने एनालिटिकल बायोकेमिस्ट्री पत्रिका में छपी रिपोर्ट में कहा गया कि नाइट्रोसेमाइन का संबंध कैंसर से होता है। ज्यादातर सब्जियों, डब्बाबंद आहार और उद्योग से निकलने वाले कचरे में नाइट्रेट की मात्रा होती है। करीब 20 प्रतिशत नाइट्रेट शरीर में जाकर नाइट्रोसेमाइन में बदल जाता है। इस अध्ययन में शामिल लोगों को, एक हफ्ते तब बिना नाइट्रेट और लहसुन वाला भोजन दिया गया। इसके बाद उन्हें सोडियम नाइट्रेट की खुराक इस प्रकार दी गई जिससे वह टॉक्सिक में न बदले। इसके बावजूद, पेशाब की जांच में, इसके टॉक्सिक में बदलने की प्रक्रिया का पता लगा। इसके बाद स्टडी में शामिल लोगों के एक ग्रुप का इलाज लहसुन के डोज से किया गया। उन्हें एक, तीन या पांच ग्राम ताजा लहसुन या तीन ग्राम लहसुन का रस दिया गया। दूसरे ग्रुप को 500 मिली ग्राम एस्कॉर्बिक एसिड या विटामिन-सी दिया गया। दोनों समूहों को सात दिन तक ये खुराक दी गई और हर दूसरे दिन उनके पेशाब के नमूने लिए गए। जांच से स्पष्ट हुआ कि लहसुन का सेवन करने वालों में नाइट्रोसेमाइन की मात्रा कम थी। 'एनल्स ऑफ इंटरनल मेडिसिन' और 'जर्नल ऑफ न्यूट्रीशन' के अध्ययन का भी निष्कर्ष है कि लहसुन सेवन से कोलेस्ट्रॉल में 10 फीसदी तक की गिरावट हो सकती है और हर हफ्ते सप्ताह लहसुन के पाँच दाने खाने से कैंसर का खतरा 30 से 40 फीसदी कम हो जाता है। वस्तुतः,षडरस अर्थात् भोजन के 6 रसों में, "अम्ल रस" को छोड़,शेष पाँच रस लहसुन में सदैव विद्यमान रहते हैं। आज षडरस आहार दुर्लभ हो चला है। लहसुन उसकी पूर्ति के लिए बहुत सस्ता, सुलभ विकल्प है। इसीलिए,लहसुन को गरीबों का 'मकरध्वज' कहा जाता है क्योंकि इसके लगातार प्रयोग से मनुष्य का स्वास्थ्य उत्तम रहता है।

औषधीय गुणः
मलेरिया के रोगी को भोजन से पहले तिल के तेल में भुना लहसुन खिलाना चाहिए। लहसुन का तेल सवेरे निराहार पानी के साथ लेने से, कितनी ही पुरानी खाँसी हो, फायदा होता है। बिच्छू के काटे स्थान पर डंक साफकर लहसुन और अमचूर पीसकर लगाने से जहर उतर जाता है। डंक ग्रस्त भाग पर पिसी चटनी भी लगाएँ। इन्फ्लूएंजा में लहसुन का रस पानी में मिलाकर चार-चार घंटे बाद दें। इसके सेवन से रक्त में थक्का बनने की प्रवृत्ति बहुत कम हो जाती है, जिससे हार्ट अटैक का खतरा कम हो जाता है। लहसुन की गंध से मच्छर भी दूर भागते हैं।यह उच्च रक्तचाप में भी काफी लाभदायक माना गया है। जी मचलने पर लहसुन की कलियाँ चबाना या लहसुनादि वटी चूसना फायदेमंद होता है। रोगाणुनाशक क्षमता होने के कारण लहसुन के एक भाग रस में तीन भाग पानी मिलाकर इसका इस्तेमाल घाव धोने के लिए किया जाता है। कुनकुने पानी में लहसुन का रस मिलाकर गरारे करने से गले की खरास दूर हो जाती है। लहसुन में पर्याप्त मात्रा में लौह तत्व होता है जो कि रक्त निर्माण में सहायक होता है। विटामिन-सी युक्त होने के कारण यह स्कर्वी रोग से भी बचाता है। लहसुन का रस 25 ग्राम की मात्रा में प्रातः निराहार ही त्रिफला के साथ कुछ दिन लगातार लेने से मधुमेह के रोगियों को लाभ होता है। यह कब्जहारी है। इसका इस्तेमाल जोड़ों के दर्द या गठिया में भी होता है तथा यह सूजन का भी नाश करती है। लहसुन के रस की पाँच-पाँच बूंदें सुबह-शाम लेने से काली खाँसी दूर हो जाती है। कान में दर्द होने पर, लहसुन और अदरक को बराबर की मात्रा में कूटकर कुनकुना करके कान में लेने से आराम मिलता है। 10 ग्राम लहसुन का रस मट्ठे में मिलाकर तीन बार लेने से पेचिश का शमन हो जाता है। लहसुन के सेवन से ट्यूमर को 50 से 70 फीसदी तक कम किया जा सकता है। गर्भवती महिलाओं को लहसुन का सेवन नियमित तौर पर करना चाहिए। गर्भवती महिला को अगर उच्च रक्तचाप की शिकायत हो तो, उसे पूरी गर्भावस्था के दौरान किसी न किसी रूप में लहसुन का सेवन करना चाहिए। यह रक्तचाप को नियंत्रित रख कर शिशु को नुकसान से बचाता है। उससे भावी शिशु का वजन भी बढ़ता है और समय पूर्व प्रसव का खतरा भी कम होता है।

सावधानीः
लहसुन की तासीर काफी गर्म और खुश्क होने के कारण इसे उचित अनुपात में ही लेना चाहिए। खासकर गर्मी के मौसम में पित्त प्रधान प्रकृति वालों को इसका संतुलित इस्तेमाल ही करना चाहिए। कच्चा लहसुन बहुत तीक्ष्ण होता है इसीलिए इसका ज्यादा उपभोग करने से पाचन क्रिया गड़बड़ा सकती है। कुछ लोगों को लहसुन से एलर्जी भी होती है। ऐसी एलर्जी का लक्षण यह होता है कि कहीं-कहीं त्वचा लाल हो जाती है और सिरदर्द होता है। बुखार भी हो सकता है। सर्जरी से पहले लहसुन का इस्तेमाल नहीं करना चाहिए। एड्स के रोगी अगर लहसुन का सेवन करते हैं तो उन्हें साइड-इफेक्ट हो सकता है। अगर लहसुन का कुछ दुष्प्रभाव महसूस हो तो मरीज को गोंद कतीरा, धनिया, बादाम-रोगन, नींबू, पुदीना देते रहने से उसका दुष्प्रभाव दूर हो जाता है। घी में भून कर लेने से भी इसका कुप्रभाव दूर हो जाता है। सूखा लहसुन छीलकर ही इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए।

Hello, PCOS or pcod s a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the way you look. If it isn't treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. The most common symptoms are: Acne. Weight gain and trouble losing weight. Extra hair on the face and body. Thinning hair or even hair loss on scalp. Irregular periods. Often women with PCOS have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding. Fertility problems. It limits foods that are high insaturated fat, such as meats, cheeses, and fried foods. Most women who have PCOS can benefit from losing weight. Even losing 5 kg may help get your hormones in balance, regulate your menstrual cycle and can make you ovulate.

HEALTHY EATING...

Ayurveda includes ahara (food) as one of the trayopasthambha, one of the three pillars to keep the body healthy. The term ahara stands for the healthy eating habits. The disciplined eating habit will nourishes and keep a person healthy, on the other hand undisciplined eating habit can lead to serious health issues.
Virudhahara (incompatible food) is the main output arising from the undisciplined eating habit.
It can be consider as one of the major thread for the new age diseases.

 - Viruddha (incompatibility)
What is viruddha?
Those substances which cause the imbalance of doshas in the body but do not expel them out are known as viruddha and so they remain antagonistic to the dhatus. When foods with different qualities, heating or cooling properties and different post digestive effect are combined in one meal they suppress the digestive fire (agni) and lead to accumulation of toxins in our body.

Bad effect of viruddha:
The use of viruddha food will produce boils, swelling, toxicity, abscess, tumors, cancer, weakness, loss of vigor loss of strength, loss of memory, loss of sense perception and intellect. Also causes fever, hemorrhagic disorder, skin diseases, diabetes etc.

Solution:
Avoiding the incompatible food combination from the food habit is the first line to prevent the bad effect arising from virudhahara. If a person already in the habit of taking foods which is incompatible, advised to reduce the quantity of such foods gradually from the diet rather than stopping it suddenly. Ayurveda explains the panchakarma (5 purificatory therapy - vamanam, virechanam, vasthi, nasyam and raktha mokshanam) as a real solution to expel out the toxins accumulated in the body.

 - Viruddha ahara (incompatible food)
By combination:
Milk with fish, horse gram, black gram, salt, sour things, bananas, meat, melons, curd, bread containing yeast, cherries
Meat of aquatic animals with honey, jaggery, sesame, milk, black gram, raddish, germinated grains
Lakucha with curd, jaggery, honey, ghee
Banana with curd, buttermilk, fish, meat, melons, curd, sour fruits, bread containing yeast, cherries
Leafy vegetables with butter
Melons with dairy, eggs, fried food, grains, starches, cheese
Equal quantity of honey and ghee
Equal quantity of honey and water
Beans with fruit, cheese, eggs, fish, milk, meat, yogurt
Eggs with fruit (especially melons), beans, cheese, fish, milk, meat, yogurt
Hot drinks with mangos, cheese, fish, meat, starch, yogurt
Lemon with cucumbers, milk, tomatoes, yogurt
Potato with melon, cucumber, dairy products
Radish with bananas, raisins, milk
Tapioca with fruit, especially banana, mango, beans, raisins, jiggery
Yogurt with fruit, cheese, eggs, fish, hot drinks, meat, milk, potato
Chilies are incompatible with, yogurt, milk, melon, cucumber
Yogurt is incompatible with milk, sour fruits, melons, hot drinks, meat, fish, mangos, cheese
Mangos are incompatible with yogurt, cheese, cucumbers
Corn is incompatible with dates, raisins, bananas

By preparation:
Pigeon meat prepared in mustard oil, honey after heating
By activity:
Drink hot water immediately after honey intake, cold water immediately after ghee intake, immediate exposure of extreme hot to cold and vice versa, cold drinks put down the digestive fire especially when taken with the meals, intake of milk when the body is heat, intake of food immediately after physical work

 - Ayurveda offers some advice concerning eating habits:
There should be at least 6-hours interval between the meals.
Do not drink water one hour before and one hour after eating. It is advisable to have like warm water along with the meal.
Do not eat many items in one meal.
Eat according to your own digestive capacity.
Do not mix fruits with your meal. Substitute one of the meals with fruits or eat them between the meals.
There should be at least 4 hours between the last meal and going to bed.
Sleeping in day time especially immediately after a meal is harmful.
A short walk after a meal helps digestion.
Do not eat when you are worried or depressed.
Do not eat if you are not hungry.
Eat in a clean and pleasant environment.
Do not read a newspaper or watch the tv while eating
Do not eat too fast or too slow

 - Taste and food: according to ayurveda there are six basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. They are composed of the five principal elements.
1) water and earth - sweet taste.
2) earth and fire - sour taste.
3) water and fire - salty taste.
4) fire and air - pungent taste.
5) air and ether - bitter taste.
6) air and earth - astringent taste.

Tastes not only influence digestion, but they also have a profound influence on our doshas. A basic principle in ayurveda is similar increases similar.

1) sweet taste is composed of water and earth element. It increases kapha dosha which is composed of the same elements, but reduces vata and pitta dosha. Sweet foods are bread, rice, milk, sugar and most of the fruits. They are necessary for every constitutional type, but in excess they increase kapha and lead to overweight, increase of the mucus secretion in the nose and sinuses, increase of the mucus in the lungs, create e feeling of
Heaviness, laziness and causes diabetes.

2) sour taste is composed of the elements fire and earth. Sour foods are mostly beneficial for vata dosha. Small quantity may be used by kapha and a very small by pitta dosha. Sour foods are citrus fruits, yogurt, vinegar, cheese, all foods produced by fermentation. Used in moderation they stimulate appetite and salivation, improve digestion and refresh one's mind. Used in excess they cause thirst, burning sensation, indigestion and may help progression of different diseases.

3) salty foods are used in small quantities by all types, but are mostly beneficial for vata and increase pitta and kapha. Salty foods are sea salt, rock salt, kelp. Salty taste has laxative effect, reduces spasms in the colon, supports the electrolyte balance, stimulates salivation, improves the taste of foods and helps digestion and elimination. Used in excess it may disturb the balance of pitta and kapha. It causes hypertension, deterioration of heart conditions, skin diseases and causes early formation of wrinkles.

4) pungent taste is mostly beneficial for kapha, may be used in small amounts by vata and in very small quantity by pitta dosha. Pungent foods are many varieties of peppers, onion, radishes, garlic and ginger. They improve digestion, clean the sinuses, stimulate nasal and eye secretion. Excessive use may cause burning sensation, thirst, ulcer, skin diseases, diarrhea and insomnia.

5) bitter taste is good for all doshas in small quantities. It is mostly beneficial for pitta dosha. Bitter foods are coffee, aloe, curcuma, salads. Bitter improves the taste of foods in combination with other tastes. It is considered antitoxic. It cleans the body and the liver from toxins. It relieves the burning sensations and itching in skin diseases, reduces the fever and improves digestion. It has a drying potency and causes reduction of the adipose tissue. Excessive use is not recommendable. It causes dryness of the skin, weight reduction and sexual disturbances.

6) astringent taste should be used in pharmaceutical quantities. It may be used by all doshas in small amounts, but pitta and kapha a little bit more than vata dosha. Astringent are pomegranates, beans, cherries and foods rich of tannins. Astringent is constricting, reduces secretions, helps wound healing and reduces bleeding. Excessive use may cause
Dryness in throat and mouth, constipation, gas, weight loss.

 - Advise according to dosha
People with vata dominant constitution should avoid bitter, pungent and astringent foods. Good for them are sweet, salty and sour foods. Light, dry and cold foods are not recommendable. It is good if everything is cooked, warm, with oil because vata dosha is light and dry.

Calories – A word you often come across when watching your weight. Counting calories is a healthy habit and quite the fashionable trend. Just knowing the word or counting calories will not help though. Here is some more information on how calories work. This will bring you a step closer to your health goal.

Calories - What are they?

Every living being requires energy to survive. Almost everything we eat, except water, provides us with calories. Every food contains some macro and micro nutrients, which, apart from providing calories, have an important role to play in our metabolism.

1 gm of carbohydrate = 4 calories
1 gm of fat = 9 calories
1 gm of protein = 4 calories

In terms of micro nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber and some plant chemicals do not supply calories.
 
Calories – How many do you need?

Calorie requirement of every individual is decided based on factors like height, age, weight, sex, the daily activity level and your body composition. The recommended average daily calorie intake is of 1940 calories for women and 2550 for men. Larger people with more muscle, need more calories. Calculate your basic calorie requirement.

Calories and weight loss?

For weight loss, it is essential to consume lesser calories and burn excess ones that are stored in the body as fat.

A] Consuming lesser calories – This can be done by keeping a track of calories you consume throughout the day. Simply substitute high calorie food (fried, otherwise fatty, sugar-laden food) with fiber-rich, low-calorie food (whole grain cereals, veggies, fruits, green leafy vegetables). High fiber food also helps you in cutting down on the quantity intake, leading to further calorie reduction. Subtracting 500 calories every day will lead to 500 gm weight loss per week. B] Burning excess calories – Increase your physical activity level by changing your lifestyle. Take up an exercise that suits your body and age. Exercise like jogging, running, walking, swimming, gymming and cycling will help in losing those extra calories.

What if I go on an extremely low calorie diet for speedy weight loss?

A very low calorie diet is the gateway to ill-health. It may give you great results in the beginning but, it ultimately leads to muscle loss, fat storage and a slower metabolism. In extreme cases it may also lead to gall stones and cardiac problems. Consuming a minimum of 1100 – 1200 calorie diet every day is the recommendation by medical authorities.

If you are already consuming only a 1200 calorie diet, do not reduce your calorie intake any further. Instead, try to burn around 300 calories through exercise or any sport. Get active by taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk from office to your home.

Is the source of the calorie important?

Well, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, but the calories derived from protein and carbohydrates are considered to be healthier, as a more complex process is required in processing these calories which in turn increase your bmr.

These macro nutrients also have some very important roles to play in the body mechanism.

It is highly unlikely that you would get pregnant with sex immediately after menses as ovulation occurs much later, but still possibility can not be ruled out as sperms can in rare situation live upto 7 days and ovulation can occur early. So it is better to take i-pill immediately to avoid un-necessary complications. To calculate safe period you can use following calender method but it is highly unreliable as it has high chance of failure. If a women’s menstrual cycle varies from 26days to 31days cycle, The shortest cycle (26days) minus18days=8th day. The longest cycle (31days) minus 10days=21st day Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period. That is UNSAFE PERIOD during which you should not have it. Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as SAFE PERIOD.
