All About Freezing and Storing Eggs

MD
IVF Specialist, Delhi
All About Freezing and Storing Eggs

Childbirth comes within an age bracket. Women feel this more so than men. Career demands or other personal choices can delay the time to get pregnant. Thus, freezing your eggs can prove to be beneficial, if you delay childbirth to focus on your career or education, or if you have certain medical conditions such as cancer.

  1. Egg Retrieval: Before the eggs are harvested, there is a lot you have to do. The first month is spent taking blood tests and ultrasounds. In the second month, you will have to take medicines before your procedure for egg retrieval. Ultrasounds and blood tests are also conducted at this stage to monitor the growth of the eggs. Around the time of your ovulation, the eggs will be harvested. You will be lightly sedated during the procedure. After the procedure, you might feel bloated and experience cramping. At least 15 eggs are retrieved for optimum chances. The medicines prescribed are all hormone injections which you can self-administer.
  2. Freezing and Storage: The largest human cell is the egg. It is comprised mainly of water. When the eggs are frozen, crystals can form which can destroy it. So an anti-freeze replaces the water after the eggs are dehydrated. This prevents crystal formation. Eggs are frozen using vitrification. In this process, the eggs are either slowly or flash frozen. Eggs can be frozen for as long as 10 years. This does not hamper the quality.
  3. Risks: There is no guarantee that freezing eggs will lead to having a baby. Sometimes, eggs do not survive the freezing or the thaw.
  4. Advantages: For women who are suffering from cancer, freezing their eggs might be the best option. They might want to preserve their fertility before their cancer treatment starts. This is useful since radiation and chemotherapy can harm your chances of getting pregnant.

The obvious advantage of freezing your eggs would be the fact that it gives you time. It lets you decide and keeps you one step ahead of your biological clock. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

You will have to wait till your expected period date. If you miss your period do a pregnancy test. More accurate is a blood test for serum bhcg. Right now we can not detect pregnancy.

Have you got your periods or no? if not, then check urine pregnancy test. If periods have come, then check for bp, hemoglobin to check for anemia or sugar to rule out hypoglycemia, which can cause unconsciousness. Do urine test with morning sample of urine.

Hi doctor now am in 34 week pregnancy. Is it safe to use black henna during pregnancy. Pls tel me.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Hi doctor now am in 34 week pregnancy. Is it safe to use black henna during pregnancy. Pls tel me.
Natural henna, derived solely from the plant, and with no added chemicals, is safe to use on your hair or on your skin. Black henna, however, contains a dye called para-phenylenediamine (ppd), and this is not safe, because it can cause dermatitis and severe allergic reactions as during pregnancy skin is very sensitive. And if you have allergic reaction, then it will become difficult to manage at 34 weeks.

When menses start, there is a lot of hormonal play in your body and the contractions of the uterus which help in expelling the blood at times makes a person feel like vomiting. The pain and the stress is the cause of the vomiting. As a house hold remedy, I would suggest you to have light diet and more salad on your menses days. Also avoid eating spicy food and oily foods on the days of menses. This will prevent acidity and also vomiting. If the pain is severe, you can consult a local gynecologist who will examine you and prescibe necessary medicines as per need, after some investigations like sonography.

Hello, people staying in hostel or pg can eat healthy even if the mess food is bad. Stock up on fresh fruits or nuts in your room. These can be eaten at any time and will keep you full. Have a mix of almonds, cashew nuts, dried apricots, walnuts, etc to munch on. You can also stock healthy snacks like chana, roasted papad, dry bhel. Opt for sandwiches. You can either make one as it does not require any cooking. Switch to multigrain/whole wheat bread instead of white one which is made of refined flour. Add vegetables and chutney and very little cheese to make a filling snack. You can mix other raw veggies like cucumber tomatoes with it if you can or simply boil with the skin in tact to get more nutrition.

Why Is Cancer the Biggest Threat to India

PGD IN ULTRAASONOGRAPHY, Non invasive cardiology course, MD - Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Narnaul
Why Is Cancer the Biggest Threat to India

Cancer is the one of the biggest threat to the young Indian population because of the factors that cause cancer, but also due to late detection. However, certain bad habbits and the factors increase the risk of cancer in India.

Causes of cancer in India:

  1. Overpopulation and the problem of nutrition: As per records, India is the world's third most populous country. However, it lacks in resources to feed the multiplying number of mouths. Nutrition plays a key role in deciding the quality of a person's life. Nutrition has therefore emerged as an essential branch of research and medical care in the last few decades. Lack of nutrition directly results in weakened immunity. Your body becomes prone to diseases, some of which can be fatal. To fight off cancer cells, one must have a strong immune system that comes from the right kind of nutrition.
  2. Smoking is a recurrent habit among children and adults: Smoking can cause cancer. Every cigarette packet reads the same warning messages but it doesn't actually deter smokers in any way. Smoking is prevalent among people of all age groups in India. From poor children to conscious educated adults, all are seen smoking.
  3. A Tropical country and its woes: Tropical countries are known to face the wrath of the sun. While most places in central, western, partly eastern and southern India experience extremes of temperature in summer, other places with moderately hot summers are not exempted from the harmful UV rays. Ultraviolet rays can be very harmful for one's skin, as it can cause skin cancer. Indians have a high amount of melanin, which protects them against sun rays, but the threat exists nonetheless.
  4. The concept of fast food: A global economy has opened avenues awaiting your attention in the realm of food. To suit the tones and moods of a fast life, fast food has been made available to you. We take pride in consuming things that can be prepared in an instant: instant noodles, soups and even curries. Packaged food and junk food are sources of cancer cells.
  5. Lack of awareness regarding the most common types of cancer: Breast and cervical cancer are the two most common types of cancer eating away the health of Indians. The problem lies in being unaware about the root causes, symptoms and treatment procedures related to these kinds of cancer. Social repression turns health concerns into matters of insignificance. Women fear social alienation after coming in the open with their problems.
