I was three weeks pregnant had taken medical abortion 1 mifepristone 200 mg and 4 misoprostol 200 mcg I started bleeding on the same day after taking the pills. I was bleeding for 14 days then period stop for 2 days then again it started bleeding heavily from last 4 days and its smelling very bad is it normal in medical abortion or something serious please advice.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
No it's not normal for medical abortion women bleed for 10 days maximum you have some retained pieces which may not be seen by ultrasound hope that your pregnancy was within 8 weeks get a minor procedure of menstrual regulation done with special syringe to sucks out pieces in the uterus opd procedure under local or general anesthesia. No cutting or curettage. Bleeding stops and a course of antibiotics is must. Rest for about ten days after procedure and take good nourishment plus some iron folic acid supplements anemia and infections are two serious complications of MTP.

If your menstrual cycle is delayed, definitely do get a urine for pregnancy test done. If you do not want to become pregnant do use contraceptives. The safe period is usually the first week of your cycle Nd the last but if the cycle is irregular, it is not necessarily safe so should not be used as contraception.

Hello there I am a 12th std student and I'm having trouble falling asleep. As you know this is a very important year ...
Hi lybrate user, first make your time table for everything and follow that time table strictly for 45 days. After 45 days you will not feel insomnia or anything. Our biological clock will adjust accordingly. Remember to be on bed everyday at the same time. Do some warm up daily in the morning. This will programmed your body to wake up early. Switch off your mobile while sleeping. Lie on bed and try to relax and focus on your breathing. Any routine if followed till 45 days will become a habit.

I am having irregular periods from 5-6 months. What is the reason? Can you please help me out?

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Haldwani
I am having irregular periods from 5-6 months. What is the reason? Can you please help me out?
Hello- Irregular periods occur due to hormonal imbalance and slow body metabolism. If you are over weight thn the fat metabolism is hampering the blood metabolism in your body and thus creating a type of deficiency which can manifest as irregular menses. -Exercise daily, and reduce fat specially from your belly. -Consume cows ghee.(Its the only natural fat which promotes normal menses due to its rich Omega-3 and other vital components) -Keep you bowel clean. Gaseous distension sometimes obstruct the menstrual; blood flow. -Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. -Drink plenty of water to detoxify your body.

What Are Drug Eruptions? Ways to Deal With It?

MBBS, Diploma in Trichology - Cosmetology, Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine, Cosmetic Dermatology
Dermatologist, Mumbai
What Are Drug Eruptions? Ways to Deal With It?

Drug eruptions are mild to severe skin conditions, where the skin shows some form of drug induced adverse reaction, which may be visible or not visible, but causes discomfort, pain, visible lesions and hives or rashes, etc. on the patient's body or some areas of the skin. This is caused when a drug given, for some reason, causes side effect or extra reaction. Often drug reactions are not serious or fatal except in some cases and can be controlled once the causative drug is withdrawn from administration.

Types of drug eruptions:
The common drug eruption types are as follows:
Type 1- Urticaria, anaphylaxis, or angio-oedema, which happens due to mediation of IgE and protein such as insulin.
Type 2- Purpura and haemolysis induced by a cytotoxic reaction for the administration of sulfonamides, penicillin, rifampin and cephalosporins.
Type 3- Due to the action of sulfonamides, salicylates, and chlorpromazine a complicated reaction develops resulting in serum sickness, vasculitis and urticaria.
Type 4- These reactions, which are caused by the hypersensitivity of cells and come in a delay cause photoallergic reactions, contact dermatitis, or exanthematous reactions. They are most common types of reactions and occur when the drug is applied topically.

All of these types show how drugs can cause several different types of reactions. Though eruptions are visible on skin, some discomforts are not visible, and then it takes time for diagnosis. However, diagnosis of the reason behind drug eruptions has to be done as soon as possible to avoid further serious types of reactions like anaphylaxis and angioedema.

Managing drug eruptions
Management of drug eruptions has to be tactful. Often drugs are taken by patients who have a lot of problems, or sickness, and are not fully fit. Moreover, they take not just one drug, but a bunch of drugs for several problems in the body. Therefore, to understand which drug caused the problem and discontinue that one is often a challenge.  However, it has been seen that discontinuing the affecting drug really helps to get the eruptions eliminated after some time. However, to stop a drug when it is most needed for a certain problem or cure and that too by diagnosing the exact drug takes some time and needs experimentation from the medical caregiver or doctor.

While the drug is still continued, treatment with antihistamines, epinephrine and corticosteroids is done to relieve the patient from the pain and discomfort. If antibiotics are given to the patient, they are stopped to see how the body reacts. To avoid an eruption sometimes premedication can be done to soothe the eruptions in case of patients with a drug eruption history.

I had unprotected sex during 4th day of my period. I hd I pill within 1 day. But after 10/11 days I hd bleeding today...
No. That bleeding is due to some hormonal imbalance due to pill. So don't make it a habit of taking pill everytime after intercourse it will damage your cycle pattern.

Common Ailments Which Can Be Treated With Homeopathy

MBBS, MD (PSM), M.F.Hom (London)

Common Ailments Which Can Be Treated With Homeopathy

We all have used homeopathy as a cure, and we know from experience that it works. This complementary modality of healing works on the principle of ‘like kills like’. All homeopathic medicines are derived from natural sources and are then diluted and ‘potentized’ to make them safe.

Here are a few common ailments that respond very well to homoeopathic medicines:

  1. Common Cold- Allium Cepa (onion) which causes tearing in the eyes and dripping from the nose, is a frequent remedy for common cold and hay fever. It is very effective when there is a watery, and burning nasal discharge from the nose. Oscillococcinum, Bryonia, Belladonna, Arsenicum Album and Aconite are also excellent cures for influenza. Bryonia is especially useful in treating body aches that accompany fever.

  2. Shock and Trauma From Injury- Arnica (mountain daisy) is the best remedy for trauma due to injuries and is an excellent first aid. It also helps to reduce pain and speeds up the healing process.

  3. A Sore Throat- Aconite, Arsenicum Album and Belladonna are very good. Aconite helps during the onset of a sore throat while Belladonna is helpful in curing tonsillitis.

  4. Nerve Problems- Hypericum (St. John's wort) is the first medicine to consider for injuries to the nerves or to parts of the body rich with them, like the back. This medicine is especially good for treating shooting pains.

  5. Psychiatric Ailments- Ignatia (St. Ignatius bean) is most effective in treating acute grief, anxiety, and depression, especially due to loss of a loved one.

  6. Cramps- Magnesia phosphorica (phosphate of magnesia) is the most effective remedy for cramps, including menstrual cramps.

  7. Indigestion- Nux Vomica (poison nut), Aconite, Carbo Veg and Pulsatilla all treat indigestion. Nux Vomica is especially useful in relieving symptoms of flatulence, constipation/diarrhoea and heartburn. Carbo Veg is extremely useful for getting rid of gas after food.

Sprains-Rhus tox (poison ivy) is the medicine of choice for people suffering from sprains and strains. It’s especially useful when the person suffers from more pain when he starts moving after resting. It can also treat symptoms of arthritis and flu.

Remember to take these medicines in the 6th or 30th potency only. If you are suffering from minor pain or discomfort, you should take the medicine 3 times a day but if the discomfort is severe, you can take the medicine every 1 to 3 hours, tapering off later.

If you do not observe at least some improvement even after 24 hours of taking the medicine, it probably is the wrong one. Consider taking another medicine or better still, consult a homoeopathic doctor. It is also best if you treat yourself for non-threatening acute conditions only and go for professional care for chronic conditions.
