General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40

Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases.

31st May is ?World No Tobacco Day?
Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40.

However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality.

Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 10% of all cardiac deaths.

I have a serious problem since more than an year now which I have no solution of. I have gone to neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, ent, etc. I feel drowsiness all day long and am not able to concentrate. Below are the symptoms I have followed by the tests I had done including blood test and mri. Symptoms: Day long Drowsiness - standing, sitting, walking, driving Fatigue Lack of concentration Memory loss A little speech problem (rare) Sleepy during driving Blurred vision Reading and Writing problem Headache mainly on both sides of the head nerve pain Understanding things take time Loss of appetite Focus lock Not refreshed after sleep even after 10hr End of the work shift after 8 hrs, I am totally exhausted. Ringing noise in left ear Test done: MRI of the brain and nerve - all clear Front sinuses MRI - all clear Neck xray - clear Blood test - all fine, hemoglobin 14.7, vitamin b12, b5 at good level, tsh 1.75, iron in level Psychoanalysis done - a little OCD but nothing harmful. Ear ent checkup - all clear Current medication: Anti depressant - 3months not effect My body: Height: 6ft 1in Weight: 73kg No feeling of sadness Fatigue 24x7 Strange fact: If I am feeling sleepy any point of the day or night and lay down on the bed with my eyes open, the high sleepy sensation subsides with in hour or two and feel a little comfortable.

There are many possibilities to this, it is not necessary that there cannot be possibilities of lesions or other abnormalities even if the mri is clear. At the onset it appears to be that you are extremely stressed and are undergoing a anxiety disorder. Yet you also need to rule out seizure disorders since drowsiness accompanied with headache is present.

Dear lybrate-user, Try educating your friend about depression this way. Both depression and anxiety are disorders that need treatment. A psychiatrist will be able to treat them after diagnosing the disorder. Suppose, you have temperature of 102* instead of 98.6*, don't you go to a doctor? Like that if depression and anxiety are much higher than what is normal, you should consult the doctor, psychiatrist. As you know, so many disorders can raise your temperature, like that so many disorders may increase your depression and anxiety. The psychiatrist will find out the cause - it may be a hormonal problem, it may be a neurological problem, it may be a bipolar disorder, or it may be a drug side effect. After diagnosing, the psychiatrist will treat accordingly - both depression & anxiety and underlying cause. Please inform all your other family members and friends about it. Just like talking about fever, let us talk about our feelings also. You need to consult a psychiatrist who will request few blood tests to find out other age related medical diseases. If they are NORMAL, he may prescribe you with a tablet of antidepressant for few months. The dose will be changed according to your improvement and side effects of the tablets. It might take 3-6 weeks for you to improve and be active like 2 years back. Still you need to take those tablets for many months. Please note that there are many antidepressants that do NOT increase sleep.

Hello lybrate user. You have not mentioned about the issues for which you get tensed easily. But in general at your age there is a lot of performance pressure and expectations which may build stress if not handled appropriately. You may need to work on some of your coping skills so as to deal with difficult situations. You may get in touch to learn a few. All the best.

You can have a basic screening test for your emotions, including anxiety. If it is something mild you can undergo CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy), is significant a short course of medications will relieve your symptoms. All the best. Consult a psychiatrist.

Lybrate-user. Its very important for you to visit a psychiatrist as you are feeling depresed and anxious. You need a teatment in form of anti depressant, anxiolytic and counselling and this would give you better results. Please do it as early as possible as you ll start enjoying your life very soon. Do not hesitate for the treatment as these pills arent habbit forming and need to take under doctor's supervision. And complete a course ad per doctor's suggestion. Take care!

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your parents at such an early age. However you did well to generate so many friends and live life in their company. Now the thing that you might have done was somehow substituted these friends for your parents and when they left you were literally left in the lurch. You need to find parent-like figures i. E. They must be elderly family people who will be steady and permanent residents in that location. You can develop what is called a symbiosis, if they are willing. A symbiosis is a dependent relationship for the wellbeing of the dependent person. Some people will be willing and some may not. One f the concerns you must consider is your lack of faith in them, which is to say you may not believe that they will remain true to you and may abandon you at some time. In that case you will inadvertently behave in a manner that you will do things to make them abandon you, without realizing that you are the cause. So if you are aware of this, you will be able to conduct yourself with confidence and promote a good relationship with them for your own good. For various reasons friends will come and go but you need not stop making new ones, regularly: some will become very close to you and may continue the friendship forever, others will be time-servers and will leave and forget you. You should not take the latter too personally and get dejected. This is life, really. Making new friends never stops at all.
