I'm suffering from depression and I'm very critical conditions at a age of 23. please help me.
Hello, I am sorry to hear that you are going through depression. I understand and empathize with your condition. Since when have you been prescribed anti-depressants. Are you able to take help online? if so then depression can be treated with psychotherapy; especially cognitive behavioral therapy. Experienced professionals may be where you are, or here may also help you with alternatives other than taking anti-depressants. I hope you will be able to receive professional assistance either online or where you reside. Regards stuti.

I am very very afraid of lot of things in my life. I have lot of phobias and my mind is completely collapsed of fear all the time. I couldn't speak in public. .I couldn't park my bike or car and do my work. My mind just threatens me all the time. I do over think a lot. Please help me out I AM AFRAID THAT ONE DAY I WILL BECOME MENTAL. Please help me out. I want to be brave and how to remove all the negative thoughts from my mind. I am very very afraid of lot of things in my life. I have lot of phobias and my mind is completely collapsed of fear ...
There is nothing to feel embarrassed about being afraid. The more you talk about it, the better you will feel. So it is very important to make friends and lot so them and you may have some close friends from among them to share very intimate things. The fear complex is doing you in. Please attend a personality development course that highlights the five-factorial approach: physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual quotients. If you develop in these five areas, you will certainly improve your confidence. Some personality courses emphasize and focus on public speaking to a large extend. It is not too bad an idea but it is a little narrow in perspective. You could instead attend a Toast Masters Club, which does the same thing in a more organized manner. Apart from regular and aerobic exercising, you must also visit a gym to build a good body image. You can go for personal grooming classes too. While regular vigorous exercise develops your body, the regimen will also enlarge your heart and help you handle stressful situations much more competently than others who don’t exercise. Dress well, eat well, sleep well and conduct yourself well in social circles to build confidence. Perform well in your studies and work, and feel good about your achievements. You could also go for hypnosis sessions to build your self-image from within. Now, remember that all your problems are in your mind: spiritual wellness, faith and prayer will boost your confidence really well. Emotional wellness will take care of the fear factor. There are lots of affirmations, if said three times at a time, everyday, they will gradually strengthen your concept of yourself. Yoga and meditation will also build you up. Speaking to a counselor will give you personal assistance in pursuing these goals. In all this, trust is a very important development. If you don't have trust you will never relate to people and you will never enjoy relationships. There is strength in numbers and you are avoiding the very thing that will make you feel secure. There may be a lot of childhood issues that may have contributed to this level of fear and lack of trust. The counselor will help you [process this and identify the origins and sort out a lot of these contributors to yoru problems.

Depression: Why is this SILENT KILLER taking our YOUTH away?

M.D Psychiatry , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Gurgaon
Depression: Why is this SILENT KILLER taking our YOUTH away?

Recently most of us were shaken by the death of the well-known television actress, Pratyusha Banerjee. Her sudden death has brought to light the very common yet under-addressed problem - Depression -  that a number of youths are living with.

Most mental and emotional health issues are inconspicuous in nature and, therefore, cause more harm than they otherwise should, most people still live with a number of symptoms of depression without even realizing it or do little to address it. When the depressive symptoms last for more than 2 weeks and affect the individual's personal, social or occupational life, it is known as clinical depression or major depression. There is often a delay in opting for the treatment because of the social taboo associated with depression.

Although cases of depression can vary from an individual to the other, there are signs that one can look out for, to identify a depressed person:

- Low mood most of the time of day along with frequent crying spells

- Feeling of unworthiness and low self-respect are very common in a depressed person. Due to these feelings, the affected person may become very critical and disapproving about himself or herself.

- Lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in a depressed person makes them no longer derive pleasure from things that once gave him or her happiness.

- Exhaustion and insomnia are signs that one should look out for in a depressed individual. These are usually due to changes in sleep patterns, from sleeping a lot because of feelings of constant fatigue or due to instances of wakefulness.

- From indulging in comfort eating to losing the will to eat, predominantly loss of appetite characterizes a depressed person.

- Difficulty in recalling details and tendency to over generalize as also problem-solving issues can point to the presence of depression

- Unexplained bodily pains and aches are another characteristics of the condition.

What are the different types of depression?

Regarding the different forms of this mental health issue, it comes in several forms along with their distinct symptoms, effects, and causes. These are:

- Major depression

- Dysthymia

- Recurrent depressive disorder

- Seasonal affective disorder

- Bipolar disorder

How can it affect your life?

More than 90% people who commit suicide suffer from some form of psychiatric illness and depression is the most common reason. The despair that usually accompanies depression makes the thought of taking one's life as the only means available to escape the pain. In addition to suicidal thoughts, it can also affect one's functioning in day to day life if help is not sought in time.

Depression is as curable as any other illness. Both medical management and psychotherapy are helpful in treatment. Type of treatment depends on patient's condition, the severity of illness as well as availability.

I think all of the incidents around your recently have contributed to your distress. It is not easy to handle and I think in your case you have not handled it well. If it is depression I suggest you apply the following measures to come out of this state: You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Absolutely no problem------- 1. Always obey your heart nd mind in such cases-------------- 2. Do not bother what people says------------ 3. It hardly matters, that into what profession both of you are, what matters is bonding and respect for each other in a relation--------- 4. Right now concentrate on studies so that you can become a better engineer, only then you could get a peditrician-----------------
