I am having severe pain in the hips which goes down up to knees due to nerve pressed in L Spine. MRI has confirmed it. Now I feel like my left lower knee has been dangling I have to lift the weight. My doctor has prescribed medicine for the time being but he said it will be rectified by surgery only. Please confirm if the surgery is the only solution. My left leg is very stiff and find it difficult to squat.

Hello lybrate-user, back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy god bless you.

MPT, BPT
Physiotherapist, Chennai
Dear , yes your disease is called atrophy or more specifically sacropenia. This is mainly seen in elderly after the age of 50. To combat this it is better to go in for exercises esp resistive exercises. This will help in building up the present muscles and helping prevent further loss. If you require anymore clarifications please feel free to consult me. Preethi mathew (mpt, maiap) neuro-physiotherapist

You have right to choose treatment. Doctors will advise best treatment for you. If problem is since 5 years, it's high time to get complete relief. You will need replacement either now or in a couple of years. So why do you want to increase your suffering. Knee replacement gives best results.

Mallet Finger

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Mallet Finger

This is a flexion deformity affecting the distal interphalangeal joint of the finger and is due to either distal extensor tendon rupture or avulsion with a bony fragment after traumatic forced flexion of the extended finger tip. The resultant weakness is often painless and presents with an inability to actively extend the fingertip. Non traumatic mallet finger occurs more often in diabetics. Treatment is usually by splinting the distal interphalangeal joint in extension. Surgery is rarely required.

You may have thyroid issues or vitamin deficiency or uric acid. Get a check up done. Also, if you have gained weight, then it can cause knee pain. If the knees are swollen and feel heavy, if there is a sound when you sit or get up and doing that is painful, stair climbing is difficult, then it might be the beginning of knee arthritis or other knee joint problem, also resulting in muscle weakness around the knee. So get a orthopedic consultation and a physiotherapy consultation personally.

Hello. You have not mentioned since how long he has been suffering from knee pain. If he has very chronic pain and he has gone through all other alternative ways and does not get relief and his pain is at very serious level he can go for knee replacement surgery ,if his knee bending is too much restricted and unable to walk then knee replacement is advisable, its completely dependent on his body response how he ll recover .As a Physiotherapist I advise you first go for alternative therapies if they don't work out you can definitely go for knee replacement it is a last and convenient option. Stem cell therapy and other therapies are also there but because of age it may not work out but knee replacement may but after surgery exercise and care should be taken. Thank you.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Dolo is actually paracetamol, so it is quite a safe medicine if taken in prescribed dosages and especially your liver function should be ok, so get it checked before regularly taking it. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards
