Is there any method or home remedy to check if my girlfriend is pregnant? Apart from test kit?

Is there any method or home remedy to check if my girlfriend is pregnant? Apart from test kit?
Home remedies include recording basal body temperature, signs like tender breasts, nausea, feeling sick etc are ways of detecting whether ones pregnant. But these are not at all specific to pregnancy hence not reliable. The only way is to watch out for a next scheduled period, is she gets it on time she is not pregnant. If she misses it she might be pregnant. In that case consult a gynecologist.

How ICSI Can Help You Get Pregnant?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
IVF Specialist, Delhi
How ICSI Can Help You Get Pregnant?

There are many reasons leading to infertility, but one of the main causes is the inability of the sperm to travel all the way up to the uterus to fertilize an egg. This is caused by defective sperms and could be due to poor sperm quality, poor motility, etc. There are multiple reasons for this, and even smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc. could be reasons.

Many technical advancements in fertility treatments are being done, and they try to keep the natural process of fertilization intact, at the same time improving the chances of success. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI, often used as a standalone term iksee) improves the rate of fertilization in that the sperm is directly injected into the egg. The environment of this artificial fertilization is completely controlled, and the fertilized egg is then placed into the womb for further growth. It is one of the recent methods of improving fertility, a part of ART (assisted reproductive technology).

Indications:

  1. Poor sperm perms motility

  2. Semen where sperm concentration is low

  3. Male infertility with unidentifiable cause

  4. Poor sperm quality, with sluggish sperms

  5. Ejaculation issues, such as retrograde ejaculation (semen is ejected into the bladder)

  6. Useful in couples who have failed IVF.

What to expect?

The following outlines some of the steps for both male and female before and during the procedure.

Before the procedure - males:

  1. First step is the sperm collection; a screening is first done

  2. Sperms collection happens through either masturbation or directly from the testicles via a small incision

  3. Sperms could be collected fresh or collected and frozen for later use

Before the procedure – women:

  1. In the normal menstrual cycle, only a single egg is released. However, prior to ICSI, the woman is given ovulation drugs, which are high-dose hormone injections prior to ovulation. This ensures multiple eggs are released, which are then retrieved for fertilization in the external environment.

  2. Blood and urine are monitored regularly to identify the ovulation time, and eggs are collected within 24 to 36 hours of release

During the procedure - How ICSI happens:

  1. A healthy egg is chosen and placed in a glass tube, and a sperm is introduced to ensure fertilization

  2. This could be repeated in multiple tubes, and the most healthy one could be chosen to be implanted into the uterus

  3. Some of the fertilized ones could be frozen for later use, in case the implanted embryo fails to grow as expected

  4. The success rate for this procedure is quite high as the fertilization rate is almost 80 - 85 %. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an IVF specialist.

Yoga During Pregnancy

Ayurveda, Delhi
Yoga During Pregnancy

How to start:

If you have been practising yoga already, you can continue during your pregnancy. However, if you are planning to start yoga as a form of exercise during pregnancy, it is ideal to do so in the second trimester. Yoga can be performed once a week or every day. The duration can range from 5 to 60 minutes per session. Follow these guidelines while practising yoga:

✓ Listen to your body carefully. If you feel any discomfort, stop. You will probably need to modify each pose as your body changes.

✓ Avoid lying on your back after the first trimester; it can reduce blood circulation to the uterus.

✓ Avoid poses that stretch the muscles too much. You are more at risk for strains, pulls and other injuries right now because of the pregnancy hormone relaxin, which softens and relaxes joints and connective tissue.

✓ From the second trimester – when your centre of gravity starts to shift – do all standing poses with your heel against the wall or use a chair for support, to avoid losing your balance and risking injury to yourself or your baby. Here is the most comprehensive second trimester dos and don’ts for you to follow.

✓ While twisting, move from the shoulders and back, rather than the waist, to avoid putting pressure on your abdomen. Twist only as far as it feels comfortable – deep twists are not advisable in pregnancy. Here are three simple exercises that can boost blood circulation during pregnancy.

1. Palm tree

Imagine you are a palm tree swaying in the wind.

Benefit: This pose stretches and strengthens the torso

Stand upright, raise your arms overhead and interlock your fingers.

Now stretch slowly and gently to the right and then the left, imitating the swaying movement of a palm tree.

2. Modified triangle pose

Can you position your body in such a way that it forms three triangles?

Benefit: This pose regulates the digestive system and massages internal organs like the liver.

Stand with your feet wide apart and arms extended at shoulder level parallel to the floor.

Stretch your left hand overhead and bend down to the right side and touch your knee. Look up at your left hand.

Return to starting position and switch sides.

3. Modified forward bend

Reach forward with your hands, with a chair for support.

Benefit: This pose stretches the back and legs.

Stand tall in front of a chair.

Lift your arms and reach towards the chair; press your palms on the chair. Keep your back straight and bend from your hips. Hold.

Return to standing position.

4. Seated twist

Twist to the right and then to the left, to improve the mobility of the spine.

Benefit: This pose stretches the spine, improves digestion and relieves constipation.

Sit with your legs stretched out in front of you. Bend your right knee and take the right foot over the left knee.

Bring the left arm and elbow over the right knee. Keep your right hand behind you on the fl oor for support. Now twist your torso to the right and turn your head back.

Return to starting position and switch sides.

5. Cat-camel pose

Imitate a cat and then a camel. Arch your spine like a cat and then lift it up like the hump of a camel.

Benefit: releases spinal stress

Get down on all fours on your mat. Place your hands directly below your shoulders. Now lift your tailbone up towards the ceiling so that your lower back is concave. As you do this your head will lift up naturally towards the ceiling.

Now round your back like the hump of a camel and roll your head towards your chest. Make the movements as fluid as possible.

6. Butterfly pose

Imitate a butterfly.

Benefit: Increases mobility of the hip joints and stretches the inner thigh.

Sit with your legs outstretched on the mat. Bend your knees and bring your feet in as close as possible, towards you. Bring the soles of your feet together.

Keep your spine straight and gently move your legs down and up, resembling the movement of a butterfly as it flaps its wings.

7. The modified corpse

You need to relax in order to feel rejuvenated.

Lie on your left side; place a pillow between your legs and below your head for support.

Close your eyes and relax your mind.

To make the poses more comfortable, use blankets, pillows, cushions and chairs for support if you need them. For instance, you can perform seated positions on a folded blanket. If maintaining an erect spine is difficult, lean against a wall for support. Also, breathing the correct way during pregnancy is vital, here are a few breathing exercises you can practise for better oxygen intake.

Follow these tips while performing the yoga asanas:

•             Yoga can be practised anywhere – indoors or outdoors. Just make sure it is a calm and quiet environment with adequate ventilation.

•             Yoga gear should be comfortable, convenient and simple. All you need is loose, comfortable clothing and a yoga mat, rug, blanket or carpet.

•             Hold each yoga pose for 10 to 60 seconds.

•             Set aside a fixed time for yoga.

•             If you have never tried yoga before, first learn the different poses under supervision. Start slowly and relax for 2 to 3 minutes after every asana if required.

•             Yoga can be performed once a week or every day. The duration can range from 5 minutes to 60 minutes per session.

•             Never force your body into a stretch or pose. Regular practice will make seemingly impossible poses more accessible.

•             If you feel any pain or nausea, stop and contact your doctor immediately.

If there is swelling at 4 months you should do urine routine done as first step and show same to your obstetrician. For numbness if you did not have prior to pregnancy don't bother. If pain is severe or very frequent you should meet your obstetrician at the earliest.

Alternatives for Improving Smile

Alternatives for Improving Smile

A beautiful smile plays a very vital role in enhancing the overall beauty of face. Rotated, stained and maL-placed tooth can cause major aesthetic/cosmetic and psychological problems in teenage and young adults. Mid-line teeth gap, rotated teeth, crowded teeth, stained teeth, broken tooth edges and wearing tooth edges are the most common cosmetic problems that our patients report to us. Dynamic advancements in the field of dentistry has come across with the solution of majority of cosmetic problems.

Here we discuss the various options available for improving smile:

1. Veneers: They are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic glued to the front of your teeth. For teeth that are severely discoloured, chipped or misshapen and gaps between the teeth, veneers create a durable and pleasing smile. A veneer is made to match the colour and shape of your tooth. Not everyone is a candidate for professional teeth whitening. Bleaching is not recommended if you have tooth colored fillings, crowns, caps or bonding in your front teeth. There are two types of veneers:

a. Porcelain (indirect) veneers, which must first be created to fit your teeth in a dental laboratory and require two visits to the dentist. Porcelain veneers are generally stronger, while composite veneers are less expensive. With porcelain veneers, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth and sends it to the dental lab for fabrication of the veneer, usually after the front of the tooth has been reduced.

b. Composite (direct) veneers, which are bonded to your tooth enamel in a single visit. With either method, the tooth is prepared for bonding by roughening the front surface with mild etching solution. The veneer can then be bonded to your tooth using a dental bonding cement.

2. Bonding: It uses composite resin to restore chipped or broken teeth, fill in gaps and reshape or recolor your smile. After applying a very mild etching solution that slightly roughens the surface of your teeth and permits the bonding material to adhere, your dentist applies the resin and sculpts, colours and shapes it to provide a pleasing result. A high-intensity light hardens the material, which is then finely polished. Bonding agents are used in treatment of midline gap closures, fractured tooth restoration, wearing teeth edges.

3. Whitening: Some people are born with teeth that are more yellow than others. Others have teeth that yellow with age. Your natural tooth colour can also be affected by many factors. Surface stains (called extrinsic stains by dentists) and discolouration can be caused by:
a. Tobacco (whether smoked or chewed)
b. Drinking tea, coffee, or red wine
c. Eating highly pigmented foods such as cherries and blueberries
d. Accumulation of tartar deposits, which result from plaque that has hardened
e. Treatment with the antibiotic tetracycline during the time when teeth are forming
f. Yellowing or greying of the teeth as part of the aging process
g. Trauma to the teeth that may result in the death of the tooth's nerve, giving the tooth a brown, grey or black colour.

Whitening/Bleaching is a simple procedure where whitening agents are applied over the tooth surface in order to chemically change the colour of tooth. It can either be a single visit clinical procedure or multiple application home procedure under the guidance of your dentist.

Will my newly whitened teeth stain?
Any tooth can stain, including the veneers and bonds mentioned above. To help prevent stains from coming back, avoid smoking, coffee, tea, red wine and heavily coloured foods. And brush your teeth twice a day with a whitening toothpaste. If you wish to discuss about any specific dental problem, you can consult a specilized dentist and ask a free question.

It is always advised to use condoms or take birth control pills. Because those after pills always have adverse effects on the women’s body and are effective only when taken within 72 hours of intercourse. The earlier the better. These pills are available over the counter but should not be taken more than once in six months.

Although you have had oral sex in her unsafe periods but probably there is no risk for pregnancy in the situation you described. Semen on hands can cause a pregnancy but it's not likely, unless a lot of fresh wet semen is ejaculated directly onto a hand and that hand is immediately placed on the vulva or inserted into the vagina. In your case, if the semen was wiped away before inserting, it which would have kill sperm. Once the fluids around sperm are wiped away or absorbed by something sperm die. Wait for her date, this is only I could say right now and there is no need for taking this oral contraceptive pill now as this should be taken within 72 hrs of unprotected sex.

One should wait about 1 week after stopping tablet to get period. This is called withdrawal bleeding and success for same is higher if tabs are taken for 7-10 days. Of course result is always after stopping tablets.
