Dental Tips for Babies

All that a Mom should know about oral health care to maintain her baby’s set of Pearly Whites:

Right time to begin brushing baby’s teeth – as soon as the 1st tooth erupts.

  • After feeding use a damp gauze or cloth gently wipe the mouth of any residue left behind.
  • Use either an over finger brush or a soft bristled brush for infants to clean the teeth.
  • Initially use a wet toothbrush and slowly move to kid’s toothpaste.

Choosing a toothpaste for kids –

  • Now a days fluoridated toothpaste for kids in very small quantity i.e rice grain sized is recommended.
  • Watermelon / bubblegum/ strawberry flavours can increase the kid’s interest towards brushing.

Brushing technique –

  • Teach your kids to brush using a small circular motion. Brush twice daily. Make it a game or sing a song to encourage brushing.
  • Toothbrushes are now available with music or lights or cartoon figures to make brushing more fun.

Tips to maintaine good oral hygiene –

  • Apart from brushing it is important to cleanse the mouth in between the meals.
  • Do not put infants to sleep with milk formula or juice as sugary liquids cling to teeth and cause decay.
  • Avoid pacifiers as they change the shape of the mouth and cause improperly placed teeth.
  • After giving medicine or eating sweet like chocolates, ice-cream encourage kids to wash mouth with water and clean with a damp cloth for infants.
  • Get fluoride treatment done every 6 months from dentist for prevention of caries.

Milk teeth are very important -

  • For maintaining the oral health.
  • Also to determine the shape of mouth and alignment of permanent teeth.

I have dental cavities and need to remove / RC done any good hospital as I am on Blood Thinner medications after my angioplasty in July 2014

BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
Sir if the cavities r deep than a root canal treatment is available, if superficial than a filling is done, if grossly damaged then has to be removed. Before the procedure the dentist need to consult your cardiologist to take the concern or permission for the procedure to go ahead. The anticoagulants should be stopped for 72hrs during the procedure

What Can we use GIC or composite fr abrasion in premolars and molars? Give me your suggestion.

What Can we use GIC or composite fr abrasion in premolars and molars? Give me your suggestion.
Hello Lybrate user, by your question im guessing you are a dentist. I prefer resin modified GIC for restoration of cervical abrasion. Masticatory forces cause cuspal flexure and the stresses are concentrated in the cervical lesion, tending to dislodge restorative materials in this region. Resin-modified glass ionomers are about twice as flexible as glass ionomers and are therefore more likely to be retained during flexing of the tooth. In addition, they absorb water for several days after photostabilization and the resulting expansion tends to offset the shrinkage caused by the initial set of the resin components. If resin composite alone is used to restore cervical lesions, poor marginal adaptation at the gingival margin is inevitable. This is mainly caused by polymerization shrinkage away from the gingival surface due to poor adhesion at the dentin surface.

I am feeling with tooth pain on left side of face followed pain beneath the ear and then on forehead. It was a stobbing pain for a 1 hour and then it disappeared. Went to dentist, he had done OPG and then suggested COMBIFLAM as if there is no dentist medication need to be done. He had suggested it could be TMJ and SINUS and adviced for ENT consulatation. Went to ENT referred to CT scan sinus and spotted with mild sinutitus but the radiologist adviced me to have MRI. ENT doctor said i am suffereing from Trigemianal Neuraglia and gave MAZETOL tablet which was supposed to a tablet for FITS patient. WENT to Nero Surgeon ad adviced to take MRI 3T scan where again results turned with no significant of tumors or trigeminal nerve is normal. Dont know what to do but still enforcing pain at times after eating.I lost my taste after taking tablets not all specfically SALT taste and feeling nervousness at times.Having a big doubt whether the problem i am facing because of TMJ or TN.

Dear , I can understand your concern and anxiety after going to so many doctors. You need to be examined carefully and all your reports needs to be seen before suggesting any treatment. All the possibilities including Neuralgia, Sinusitis and TMJ problems are possible but the exact cause of the complaint in your case needs to be identified. I suggest you see us or any other well-trained Specialist at a good center. Please do not ignore your problem. Take care.

I have mouth ulcer since 6 months. What should I do? And I also have low blood pressure what prevention I should take?
Eat lot of fruits & green leafy vegetables & drink plenty of water. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with t. Rebagen 10, morning one tab & one at night for 5 days, c. Becosules 5 cap, for five days in the morning after meals. Hexigel ointment on the area of ulcer. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals.

Sir/Ma'am, I have a front teeth gap around 5mm and it's really embarrassing. Tried to contact dentists in the regional hospital but they said I would need braces, is there any alternative and what would be the cost for the same? Thank you.

Sir/Ma'am,
I have a front teeth gap around 5mm and it's really embarrassing. Tried to contact dentists in the regiona...
One more option called" composite fillings" which will cover the gap and it will be same like tooth colour. One more option called" teeth veneering" in which your teeth will be covered by veneer so gap will not be visible. Visit to a dentist for examination and proper treatment plan.

Hi sir, As I can't open my mouth because of chewing gutkha. Please guide me to get back to normal position.

BDS
Dentist, Kochi
Hello lybrate-user, Chewing gutkha or tobacco is not a good habit as it spoils the teeth and also, as in your case, restricts the opening of the mouth. First thing you should do is stop the habit. Then please consult a general dentist or a specialist as early as possible for a complete and thorough oral examination. There might be tests required before starting the treatment. The dentist would help in guiding your mouth back in normal position. Please do not delay the treatment. Thank you.
