Generally infants in this age have long sleep periods so need not worry if they are feeding well and passing urine well.

Dear lybrate-user, as you said your husband is asthmatic, there is a possibility that your daughter might become asthmatic in near future as it runs in families sometimes but that percentage is not that significant enough, what your daughter is having at present probably allergic rhinitis, a component of whole allergy spectrum. Treatment is symptomatic only. Nothing to worry about nebulisation will be helpful, thank you.

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

My son often gets chest congestion (once in a month). His nose won't be blocked, but mostly cough and then fast breathing within a day. What treatment is safe and suitable? Doctor gives nebulization of Levolin and that really helps and is effective but will it cause any side-effects?

Practically every medicine has some side effect though it may not happen with every patient. Levolin nebulization is helping, it may be given as per advise of doctor.

Hi Mr. D there is no issue in feeding your baby if he is otherwise well. You will have to monitor for jaundice and if baby is B+ve then anti-D injection has to be given for the mother in order to protect next baby from haemolytic disease due to blood group incompatibility.

You should always mention the weight of the baby when you discuss hie health concerns. Poor food intake can be due to hypothyroidism and check up TSH and inform me .ALso do CBC to know if he is anemic. Next, not important if he is feeding in bottle you must stop bottle and feed from a cup or sipper.

This weight is less than normal weight at this age. But ther is nothing to fear. You should not feed in bottle but feed with a spoon or baby sipper. Cerelac and other homemade semi solids can be started from 4th month onwards

Hi my daughter is of 6 years old. And has problem of bedwetting. Eventhough she goes to bathroom before bed. And she drinks water after 10 PM. We have given lots of medicine and consult to the doctor. Pls. Suggest the solution.

MD Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
Is this problem since begining or has started recently? I suggest you to stop liquids or beverages after 7 pm. Ask her to empty her bladder before she goes to bed. Consult your paediatrician for the dosage of medication you are using, some times you need to increase the dosage of the medicine till it works.

I have a kid who will soon turn 3. I'm so worried that she doesn't put on weight. Birth weight was 2.36 kgs. Uptill year 1 she gained well Theron it's minimal. Now too she weigh btw 10.6 to 10.80. Somehow each time I feel she will gain weight, she falls sick and loses weight. Hence her weight always stays within 11 kgs. She is otherwise a super active baby. My ped advised pediasure but nothing. Trying to get her eat the list given by a dietician but no results. I am worried.

There is no wonder drug/safe drug for the child so that they keep on eating. Weight of the child as per requirement should have been around 13 -14 kg. Instead of becoming more worried try to enroll variety in the food with 2hrly feeds for the baby. Also do not repeat the same food daily keep on changing. If the child is taking 2 glass of milk then its ok if not then enroll milk products in diet like paneer, shrikhand etc. Give halva, sweets etc along with dry fruits also. Give seasonal fruits. If there is difficulty is swallowing then give semisolid food after grinding in the mixer. Always give home-based food. At the end if the baby is getting ill again and again kindly meet you pediatrician to rule out immunodeficiency diseases.

Formula feeds are better to be avoided and do not give in bottle. Instead give from cup and spoon. She should be started on home made semisolids.

My daughter is 10yrs old, she is daily urinated in the bed, how to stop her bed wetting? Is that any problem?

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician, Kanpur
It is the result of poor toilet training in early childhood. You do not give any liquids and urinate her before bed time, set some alarm at night to ask her for urination. You can also use bed wetting alarms available in the market.

I'm a 34 years old mother of 2 girls, and a 14 years old son. My son has always been a loving, caring, well behaved child. Only problem that we have had is the first years and a half of middle school as he was focused on being cool. He's grades began to slip for a short period. Recently I found out that he gently rubbed my 16 years old sisters butt, and tried to slide his hand down her panties while she was asleep, one night while she and my mom came for a visit. My little sis slept in his bed, and he slept on floor beside the bed. He got as far as his knuckles when he pulled his had away. He says he stopped he felt guilty" Gross and disgusted" were the words he used. It truly flabbergasted me that he did this. I didn't believe it when I was told he had done this. He has always been a caring child. A kid that truly cared about other's feelings. My question is. Could this be normal exploration even though he chose to do this to a sleeping young lady, or could this be something that I should worry about as I have a 12 years old daughter, and a 3 year old daughter that doesn't speak well yet? I love my son and I'm very worried about this. Does he need counseling?

BHMS, MD - Homoeopathy
Homeopath, Lucknow
See as far as age of your son is considered, these are some normal sexual explorations, but yes off course in a wrong way, your child needs counselling, but by you only. See, people in india do not want to talk about sex, but sex education in teenage is very much necessary to develop the good in your child. At this age teenagers are eager about the sexual changes taking place in their bodies and also of opposite sex, to fulfil their eagerness they indulge in wrong activities. If this time they are provided with good information about their eagerness from their parents itself, like friends, so they will develop into more mature male, and do whatever is correct. So, you, being a supreme power of the house, you can take charge of the task, instead thrashing you son, thrashing leads to separation and counseling leads to more friendship.
