Menstrual Irregularities

A regular menstrual period is when you bleed for 5-6 days every month. A normal cycle is 11-13 menstrual periods every year. An irregular menstrual period is when there are less than 10 or more than 14 menstrual periods in a year.

Initially, when a teenage girl reaches puberty, the menstrual cycles are a little irregular. It takes a few months to a couple of years before the hormones are balanced and the cycles come in regular intervals.

Peri-menopausal women have extremely irregular periods, ranging from mere spotting in some months to severe bleeding and muscular cramps in the next few months. As a woman approaches menopause, there are wide fluctuations in hormones that cause the irregularity.

Other Causes Of Menstrual Irregularities-

  1. Excessive weight gain or weight loss. Obesity has been found to cause menstrual irregularities.

  2. Emotional stress and anxiety.

  3. Persistent physical exhaustion.

  4. Illness.

  5. Increase in exercise. Heavy exercise and endurance regimes are known to cause missed or irregular periods.

  6. Travelling, differences in temperature and weather conditions can affect periods.

  7. Contraceptive pills and other birth control medications.

  8. Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

  9. Other medical issues with the pelvic organs.

  10. Inadequate rest and sleep.

  11. Indulging in too much of processed or fried food.

  12. Breastfeeding can cause menstrual irregularities and regain normalcy after it has been stopped completely.

  13. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia has been known to cause menstrual irregularities.

Treatments-

  1. A balanced diet which includes enough proteins, calcium and vitamins.

  2. Abstinence from caffeine and alcohol.

  3. Light but regular exercising.

  4. Take some medication after due consultation with a doctor.

  5. Abstain from smoking or consuming tobacco in any form.

  6. Take vitamin and folic acid supplements.

  7. Get yourself checked for blood sugar or cholesterol.

  8. Maintain an optimum body weight.

  9. In case of missed periods for over 2 months, do a home pregnancy check up or visit the gynaecologist.

  10. Stay away from situations that stress you and attempt to control your anxiety. Cultivate an activity that you enjoy, be optimistic and enjoy life.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

My girlfriend's period starting in 5-7 days, is that safe to do intercourse with her today to avoid Un-wanted pregnancy? Please advise.

General Physician, Faridabad
If your cycles is regular, say your menses start on 1st and ends on 5th, then safe period is 6-11 and 18-to start of menses is considered to be safe. But pregnancy can happen any time. Better use condom. It will help you. Thank you.

Fellowship In Minimal Access Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS

Hi lybrate user, if you have not ejaculated then there is no chance of pregnency, in case you have any doubt or if she misses her period then do a urine pregnency test n check, her bleeding during sex is due to hymen tear, which is expected in initial intercourse.

I got married. One year passed. Everything normal and also i am having regular periods every month. But this month I missed my period and white vaginal discharge. I used pregnancy kit but it shows negative. Can you explain it please. It is totally new thing to me. This month only happening like this. Is this white vaginal discharge is normal.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Vaginal discharge is a whitish liquid that is produced in the uterus and is discharged by way of vagina. It is a normal process and it generally begins in a girl life when she is due to attain puberty or prior to menstruation. It is the nature’s way of keeping the vagina healthy and lubricated. Women experience vaginal discharge all through their lives though it reduces after they reach the menopausal stage. Normal vaginal discharge helps to keep the vagina clean and healthy. It does not have a bad odour or you can say that it has no smell at all and you may see the traces of discharge on your under garment. It is normal for vaginal discharge to increase under certain conditions like- A few days before menstruation During pregnancy During ovulation Hormonal treatment Sexual excitement Emotional stress

lybrate-user it would be worth the effort to meet an experienced Gynaecologist or general physician once and consult them as to what would be best suited contraceptive option for you. It is good that you are being careful in this matter and planning before hand. Good Luck.

Hello Ms. lybrate-user. The gastrointestinal symptoms are most probably due to metformin. If metformin has been started empirically i.e without checking blood glucose levels, it is advisable to review the prescription. Metformin is helpful in PCOS only when associated with increased fasting blood glucose levels. Otherwise, just continue the combination of D-chiroinositol and myoinositol that you are taking. Regards.

The Stress-Sex Connection

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

The Stress-Sex Connection

Stress can take a toll on your health in more ways than one and your sexual health is greatly and adversely impacted by stress. Stress can take a toll on the emotional relationship you share with your partner and also your own physical health, thus resulting in a hampered sex life.

Stress and Our Libido:

By now, we know that hormones affect our bodies in numerous ways from childhood to adolescence, pregnancy, menopause and beyond. Cortisol is one of the hormones produced by stress, and you might have heard of it if you’ve ever seen those late night diet pill commercials with the image of the pixelated woman gaining weight in her abdomen. Our bodies need this hormone, but in small doses for short bursts of time. If elevated levels of Cortisol are being produced for a prolonged period of time, they suppress our sex hormones. Lower quantity of sex hormones equals lower libido.

Impact of Stress on Sex-

  1. Stress takes a toll on libido.
  2. Low levels of libido imply lesser secretion of sex hormones, thus, affecting your sex life.
  3. Stress can interfere with your fertility, ovulation and sperm count.
  4. Stress can cause a shift in the hormones. In women, the change in hormones manifests in the form of an irregular ovulatory cycle.
  5. Loss of intimacy.
  6. Being under stress constantly can lead to anger, emotional outbursts, depression and loss of intimacy with your partner; thus affecting your sexual relations.
  7. Stress also affects your body image negatively, thus leading to unpleasant and bad sex.

How to rejuvenate your sex life?

Ayurvedic medicines help to overcome the stress related conditions without any side effects. Some herbs proved to be helpful in relieving stress & increasing libido like Ashwagandha,
safed musali, Shatavari, Manaskalp capsule, Ozaup  capsule. These are beneficial in all stress-related sexual problems. Other tips are:

  1. Communicate your feelings: Many-a-times, communicating and sharing your feelings, desires and anxiety with your partner might be all that you need to rejuvenate your sex life.
  2. Regular exercise and proper sleep: 20-30 minutes of body work out or a session of yoga everyday helps you to de-stress. A proper eight-hour sleep cycle will also go a long way in de-stressing you.
  3. Supplements to boost your libido and energy: Taking multivitamins, minerals, zinc and other supplements helps to boost your energy levels and libido, thus allowing you to enjoy your sex life to the fullest.
  4. Set the mood correctly: Set the right mood before your intimate sessions; with some soothing music, aromatic fragrance and dim lights. This can and will enhance your sex life by promoting relaxation, happiness and overall emotional well being. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.
