Missed My Periods and Pregnancy

MBBS, DGO, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MRCOG

Missed My Periods and Pregnancy

What do I do if I am sexually active and have missed my periods?

When you miss your periods and are sexually active, the first thought that comes to mind is that of a pregnancy. A simple pregnancy test should be done with the help of commercially available test strips. One simply needs to add three drops of urine in the well provided on the kit. A single line means there is no detectable pregnancy as yet and two lines means that you are pregnant. At times one line is faint and the other dark. In such a situation, it is best to get in touch with your doctor to decide the best option available to you.

It is advisable to check the expiry date of the strip before use and to preferably use the first urine in the morning as it is the most concentrated urine sample of the day. If you are unable to do the test early morning then any urine sample would do but if the test is negative, please make sure that you repeat the test after 24-28 hours.

If you are very stressed about the reliability of the pregnancy kit, you can go for a blood test for pregnancy which is 100 percent accurate and also tells us about the approximate time ultrasound scan should be performed to check the baby's position in the uterus.

There could be many other reasons for missing the periods besides pregnancy and these are PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome), use of an emergency contraceptive pill (like I-pill), ovarian cyst, stress, extensive travelling, medical diseases like tuberculosis and hormonal imbalances specially of thyroid to name a few.

Whatever be the reason for missed and overdue periods, one should still rule out pregnancy as you could still be pregnant even with all the above mentioned conditions.

Every woman should know how to keep a period calendar so that she knows when her cycle has gone overdue. Many a times it is a false alarm and the periods are actually on time.

Not Getting Orgasm - 5 Mental Reasons

MBBS
Sexologist, Jaipur
Not Getting Orgasm - 5 Mental Reasons

Sex is not only a physical need, sex is a great way to emotionally bond and get closer to your partner as well. Any dissatisfaction in the bedroom can affect other aspects of your life, and can lead to fights, squabbles and general unhappiness. The inability to orgasm can become a major bone of contention. There can be various reasons behind the inability to climax. Some of the common ones are detailed below:

1. Lack of stimulation
Studies show that only 25% of women reach climax during sexual intercourse. The remaining 75% of women require more stimulation, like fingers or even toys and tongues to reach orgasm. Amongst this is a subset of 10-15% of women who never reach orgasm. Thus, a large number of women require extra stimulation to achieve climax during sex. You must talk to your partner about putting in some extra effort and providing the extra stimulation you need to achieve climax.
2. Over-thinking
Many men and women over-think their actions in bed. From their expressions to how they are reacting and how they are making their partner feel - everything is under constant scrutiny and revision. This leads to a lot of stress, which can hinder your ability to reach orgasm. You need to relax in the bedroom, because whatever you do will feel good in some way or another. Your anxieties can also distract you from what is going on, which means you don't get the chance to fully experience the pleasures of sex. If it helps, speak to your partner about your anxieties and tell them what you are stressing about during sex.
3. Differences between men and women
Men are visual creatures. This means that what they see turns them on. A woman's orgasm, on the other hand, happens in her head. Thus, men and women have different roots to their stimulation. Lack of an orgasm might mean either of these needs isn't being fulfilled. A great way to work around this and make sex more fun is to include a lot of foreplay in your love-making session. You can do this by trying out role-playing or using sex toys. Make sure to take it slow for a great build-up to your orgasm.
4. Performance issues
Porn has an impact on your sex life. It can increase your expectations to a considerable extent, which may not be fulfilled, thus hampering your experience in the bedroom. A lot of people become so focused on reproducing that experience that they forget that its real life. The focus on performance overwhelms their actual experience of sex, which results in an inability to reach orgasm. Try to accept the fact that you don't really have to perform for your partner. Your partner appreciates you for what you are, despite everything.
5. Mental blocks
A problem in the relationship, certain health conditions like depression, past trauma and negative social conditioning can all have negative impacts on your ability to orgasm. Talk to your partner about past trauma if you have any, and what your triggers are. Consider speaking to a sex therapist as mental health issues should never be neglected. Depression hits the libido hard, and the problem is only compounded by antidepressants. Negative social conditioning can only be helped by therapy, so try to reach out to a mental health professional.

The chances to have a Thyroid problem if there is a family history is more as compared to people who dont have a family history. But it doesnot mean that all those having a family history will surely acquire it although chances are more. You can plan for second baby and the same logic will apply on your second child as well.

Hi, What will be the last possible age for pregnancy and is there any chance of pregnancy after the age of 36? If yes, how many times she can get pregnant approximately? Please help!

Hi, What will be the last possible age for pregnancy and is there any chance of pregnancy after the age of 36? If yes...
There is no age bar as such, thanks to IVF. However the rate of fertility gradually declines in the late 30s. Prenatal screening should however be a bigger concern once pregnant.

Strawberries - 11 Reasons Why You Must Eat Them!

Strawberries - 11 Reasons Why You Must Eat Them!

Berries are known to be extremely beneficial to health, and the strawberries, given their wide availability are more popular, especially in the Asian region. Whether as a raw fruit or in a salad, as a smoothie or an ice-cream, strawberries are liked by different people in different forms.

Read on to know some of the common benefits of these wonderful berries.

  1. Boost immunity: Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, strawberries boost immunity significantly. A cup of strawberries is enough to get a complete day’s requirements of vitamin C.
  2. Controlled inflammation: The antioxidants and phytochemicals lower the ability of blood to develop higher cholesterol levels. They help reduce levels of C-reactive protein in the body system, which also controls inflammation. The risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke is reduced significantly.
  3. Digestive system: Given their high fibre content, it helps eat less and with reduced calories. It also promotes bowel movement and reduces intestinal inflammation. It also contains nitrate which improves blood flow and helps cleanse the system.
  4. Antihypertensive: Strawberries are rich in potassium, and this is highly beneficial in controlling blood pressure. Potassium and sodium act conversely, and by increasing potassium, sodium is reduced, which helps lower blood pressure.
  5. Controls cholesterol: The Ellagic acid and flavonoids are known to reduce low-density lipoprotein or LDL, which is harmful to the heart and overall health. They also reduce oxidative damage, which is a result of chronic inflammation leading to heart disease.
  6. Anti-aging properties: The biotin in the strawberries also improve skin and hair quality and also promotes tissue regeneration. They promote collagen formation, which reduces wrinkles and improve skin tone and texture. Vitamin C and A are also responsible for its antiaging benefits.
  7. Stress management: The antioxidants, improved immunity, and reduced inflammation also lead to improved stress management.
  8. Heart health: The colour of the strawberries comes from flavonoids, which are the main reason for their heart health.
  9. Eye health: Strawberries have been shown to improve eye health by reducing incidents of cataracts, reduces the degree of macular degeneration, and reduces damage from sun exposure. The vitamin C also strengthens the eyes lens and retina, further contributing to eye health.
  10. Anti-cancer agent: Strawberries are specifically shown to reduce the incidence of esophageal cancer with their rich content of flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamin C, and most importantly ellagic acid. These suppress cancer cell growth and reduce free radicals in circulation thereby providing protection against cancer.
  11. Weight management: Not just for people who want to lose weight, but even on a preventive measure, strawberries are good for weight maintenance. Those who want to prevent heart disease and diabetes should help themselves to strawberries. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

It takes about 10 weeks for a csection delivery to heal totally then the woman is fit for intercoirse and for normal delivery 4-6 weeks are required to resume. NOrmal sexual relations between the couple. If your wife is breath feeding the bay then she is anyway protected by nature not to have a baby. However to be extra cautious please use a condom instead of hormonal contraceptive pills especially if your wife is breastfeeding. All your doubts are best discussed with a gynecologis for further clarity. All the best.

Gynocologist suggested gesto kare, to postpone periods. Is it ok to use it before 4 days to the period date?

BHMS
Homeopath, Vadodara
I am totally opposing it. Menstrual cycle is very important phenomenon is woman. It is regulated by hormones of pituitary gland and ovaries. Level of these hormones get disturbed by taking drugs like gesto kare. These drugs may ruin your menstrual cycle in future. And remember, disease with hormonal disturbance are most difficult to treat. We should never play with menstrual cycle my opinion is not take such medication. Regards Dr Rajesh Suthar

5 Reasons Why Farting is a Wonderful Thing

MD - General Medicine

5 Reasons Why Farting is a Wonderful Thing

While the very mention of the word ‘Farting’ makes some of you cringe and cover your nose, you can’t ignore the sheer obviousness of the whole process. It is as natural as eating, drinking, sleeping & other daily habits you associate yourself with. Farting occurs mainly when the air is trapped within your body. Air might be swallowed during eating or from intestinal gas and chemical reactions in the stomach. In hindsight, farting can be a good thing. Don’t think so?

Here are 5 reasons for you to believe that farting is actually wonderful and not as gross as you think it might be:

  1. The hydrogen sulphide present in the fart is poisonous and smelly, but if used in small amount, is known to be beneficial in the prevention of heart disorders and strokes.
  2. The smelling farts containing hydrogen sulphide, which is known to be useful for slowing down the ageing process
  3. Farting, openly and without inhibition, while being in a relationship can actually be considered as taking a step forward in terms of honesty and comfort in the relationship. If you can share the process with your other half without hesitation and can accept the pungency that comes with it, then the relationship is definitely working well.
  4. Farting can work as a self-defensive mechanism, as proved by recent researchers.
  5. Holding your fart for a long time might cause uncomfortable conditions, such as bloated bowel movements and haemorrhoids. No matter how much you hold them, the farts will release themselves once you’re relaxed, especially when you’re sleeping.

Bottom-line: Just let it go. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Hi, , without knowing your daily routine n food habits its hard to ans your q. Any way on other hand its great that you raised such q. Current scenario sure you can plan your healthier progeny! it demands prior planning of at least 3 months. 1st month for detox for both of you to drain your accumulated toxic n non toxic garbage and hereditary issues in your family. 2nd n 3rd month diet plan for you n your hubby to boost in all sense. Ayurveda shares every month a special kind of diet for the physiological need of developing baby (according to proper growth of organs) n mom too this will lead effortless and n normal delivery, though we share to attend your gynae Dr. For routine immunisations care. I'd request to join any of garbh sanskar or yoga class to add strength n flexibility to you this will avail benefits during your postpartum time (post delivery) its suggested to accompany (instead of alone in home) any of your mom/in law to have good time. During 1st 8 weeks for morning sickness you may have pinches of borkut/amalasuntha/kokam mix by sharing with your dr.

I put copper T and now I getting some problems like bleeding once or twice in a day

Yes. In a patient who has got Copper T, occasional bleeding in between menses is normal. The threads of the copper T lie in the vagina, and hence some white discharge is also increased in copper T users. How ever it is best to report it to your gynecologist to get evaluated about these symptoms especially if they have been accompanied by tumy ache, vaginal itching and burning while passing urine.
