Daughter has wax. When we cleaned with the ENT, she got infected. We have been dressing her ears for the last 4 days. Still she is complaining about pain. What should we do?

Daughter has wax. When we cleaned with the ENT, she got infected. We have been dressing her ears for the last 4 days....
Do not clean too frequently - it is causing injury to her ears. Just pour few drops of warm mustard oil in both ears and leave overnight -do this for 2 days. In the morning she would be relieve of her ear-pain. If not then do visit your ENT once again. For further queries get back to me.

I am a 38 years old male and I have a sinus problem last 10 years. What should I do?

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Do you have pain on cheek bones on pressing it? hot fomentation is really helpful in sinus besides drink fluids, such as water or juice. This will help dilute mucous secretions and promote drainage. Avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol, as they can be dehydrating. Drinking alcohol can also worsen the swelling of the lining of the sinuses and nose. Moisturize your sinus cavities. Drape a towel over your head as you breathe in the vapor from a bowl of medium-hot water. Keep the vapor directed toward your face. Or take a hot shower, breathing in the warm, moist air. This will help ease pain and help mucus drain. Apply warm compresses to your face. Place warm, damp towels around your nose, cheeks and eyes to ease facial pain. Rinse out your nasal passages. Use a specially designed squeeze bottle (sinus rinse, others), saline canister or neti pot to rinse your nasal passages. This home remedy, called nasal lavage, can help clear your sinuses. If you make your own rinse, use water that's contaminant-free distilled, sterile, previously boiled and cooled, or filtered using a filter with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller to make up the irrigation solution. Also be sure to rinse the irrigation device after each use with contaminant-free water, and leave open to air-dry. Sleep with your head elevated. This will help your sinuses drain, reducing congestion. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

I am suffering from tonsillitis from many years. I do remedies my tonsillitis is cure when I drink when I eat it's on again come. I do Ayurveda treatment and allopathic treatment Allopathy cefpodoxime cefixime cetrizine Azithromycin and all kind of antibiotic but again and again I am suffering of tonsillitis what should I do.

DNB (ENT)
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Kota
Tonsillitis is pretty common. Present guidelines suggest that if you have more than 4 to 5 episodes of tonsillitis in a year, or you have difficulty swallowing food, or you snore because of tonsils, then its better to get them operated and removed (surgical removal is absolutely safe, it would not harm your body in any way) if anything less, it can be managed medically.

I have dry cough and sometimes I feel like my throat is blocked and I am unable to breath since about a month.
Do you have only dry cough or is it associated with recurrent sneezing and nasal discharge. Appears to be allergic in nature and requires complete evaluation and ruling out of asthma.

Is surgery is only way to treat nasal septum deviation as my medical exam for job is due. Will that be a issue?

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Imphal
If we talk about nasal septal deviation, probably you will find it in 90% of the general population or may be more. Surgery is required only when the deviation is causing the problem like nasal blockage on the side of deviation, frequent nasal bleed, chronic headache or sinusitis. If you have those symptoms, its advisable for surgery or else not required.

I faced dry throat 2 times in last month. I am worried it was because of smoking habit. So I decided to quit smoking. What all other precaution I should take to avoid any future throat cancer type of serious problem. Is any diet I should follow to strengthen my lungs and throat?

I faced dry throat 2 times in last month. I am worried it was because of smoking habit. So I decided to quit smoking....
Yes dryness of throat is likely due to smoking as it dries up the mucosa. You should avoid alcohol intake as smoking and alcohol intake together synergistically will increase the chances of developing cancer. Quit smoking and alcohol intake. Diet avoid too much spicy oily foods have plenty of fruits vegetables 3-4l of water with regular exercises that will keep you fit and strong. Do breathing exercises to improve your lung efficiency.

What are the generally available treatment to reduce snoring and please mention the medicines if any?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in thenose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.
