What Really Causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Causes and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which is characterized by the inflammation of the joint lining and gives rise to pain, stiffness, warmth and redness in the joints. The inflammation occurs in the tissue that normally produces lubricating fluids for the joint. This condition is progressive in nature, and can cause the destruction of joints, leading to functional and locomotive disability.

Though rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that can last for years, patients may not experience any symptoms for a long time. In some cases, the disease may affect other parts of the body like the eyes, lungs, and the heart.

The severity and duration of the symptoms are unpredictable, and the symptoms experienced are:

- At times, people experience increased disease conditions called flare-ups.
- They may also experience alternating periods when the symptoms fade or diminish, which is referred to as remission.
- Some of the common symptoms of the disease include lasting pain and stiffness for more than an hour in the morning, inflammation, fatigue, fever, and a general sense of discomfort.
- Inflammation in the joints close to the hands like wrists and fingers and other parts like neck, shoulders, elbows, knees and hips can also be affected.
- In some cases, both sides of the body are affected at the same time, which is known as inflammation in a symmetric pattern.

Rheumatoid arthritis is usually caused by the body's weakened immune system, which produces antigens to attack itself. The trigger to this reaction is not yet clearly deciphered.

It is diagnosed by clinical examination (American association of Rheumatology criterion) supported by relevant Investigations.

Management

Management for Arthritis includes the following aspects:

1) To control disease activity and control of symptoms of pain, stiffness.
2) Medical treatment to prevent system effects of the disease.
3) Nonmedical treatments comprise of dietary therapy, physiotherapy, immunomodulation therapy.
4) Minimal surgical therapy like arthroscopic synovectomy to confirm the diagnosis as well as reduce disease activity. At times, with the advanced decline of joints, a major surgery like replacement therapy may be required for specific cases.

What's more important is to know that at any stage of the disease patient can adopt and live an active life with appropriate treatment.

I am 20 years old and I have shoulder pain from previous days. How should I recover?

I am 20 years old and I have shoulder pain from previous days. How should I recover?
Massage with your thumbs from the mid points of the shoulder blades on both sides towards the lower back of your head up to lower level of the ears. Use oil or water for massage. Rotate your head clockwise and anticlockwise, forward and down, left and right a few times. Do for 5 to 10 times morning and evening. Give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Consult after 5 days. For further guidance and treatment.

Hello, I am suffering from coccyx (tailbone) pain from past 1 year. And now i am really fed up with this pain. Because of this my normal life has been disturbed. Please suggest me some permanent solution on dis. I consulted doc but he said there is no permanent solution.Plz help me out of this.

Physiotherapist, Surat
Conservative management is by physiotherapy. Steroid injections. You can also try out acupunture as I have got good results with it in some of my patients. If that has failed then you have to get your coccyx removed surgically.

Homeopath,
Dear lybrate user, protein is one of the most vital nutritional substances which are required for human body. Almost every high protein diet contains purine. This purine produces uric acid on oxidation. Excess uric acid is accumulated at the joints of human beings as urate salts. This accumulation of urate salts lead to gout. You should avoid high protein rich diet like mutton, chicken, beef, eggs, sea fish, spinach, garden pea, tomato, lentils etc. Also you need to take homoeopathic mother tincture urtica urens q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to dissolve the accumulated excess urate salts from the joints.

I am 22 year old female I am having a severe backache since 5 days what should I do?
First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket. And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back. You may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * surya namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * in diet vegetable protein of cereal, b complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.

Hi, my father is suffering from a disease, doctors report says suggestive of mylomalecia. Few doctors are saying its better to get the surgery done however few others says that it should be treated with medicines as their would be chances of improvement. They say a surgery would lead to the present condition of my father remain as it is forever. We are confused as we don't have any option apart from trusting the doctors. Please guide me.

Thanks for your query on lybrate. Com. As your father is having a progressively deteriorating condition of spinal cord and nerves, it is reasonable to give him a chance to halt further damage by a good neurosurgeon.

My left knee MRI report says high grade injury with full thickness tear in mid substance of anterior cruciate ligament. Moderate amount of joint effusion extending till suprapatellar bursa. What does it mean? Treatment is only surgery or can be treated without surgery. Which type of surgery is performed? Is surgery is safe? My knee will be recovered completely after surgery? How much time surgery takes? Please provide the answer of above queries?

Physiotherapist,
My left knee MRI report says high grade injury with full thickness tear in mid substance of anterior cruciate ligamen...
Your condition needs immediate Orthopaedic intervention. Yes you should go towards surgery if your Orthopaedic doctor suggest so. Joint effusion means swelling in the joint which is extended till suprapatellar bursa which is near your knee cap. Definitive treatment is surgery. Yes it is completely safe and results are good with physiotherapy rehabilitation. You will have to go through prolong physiotherapy rehabilitation program to recover completely. If it is arthroscopic surgery it will be done within sm hours and you ll be discharged in a couple of days. Surgeon can tell you the time of surgery more precisely. In my opinion in a complete rupture of ligament ,surgery should be done and 3 months of physiotherapy rehabilitation post surgery. Hope you got your answer.

Hi, Do share reports and details of your case. Apply Bakson’s Rheum Aid oil gently (2-3 times a day) and take orally Bakson’s Rheum-Aid syrup/ 1 tablespoon thrice daily. Also, increase your dietary intake of calcium which is present in green leafy vegetables, milk, milk products, sea food, white legumes, dried fig, black-eyed peas, almonds, oranges, seasame seeds. And vitamin D which is essential for absorption of calcium in our body and is synthesized naturally after getting exposed to sunlight, so early morning sunlight for 10-15 min. 2-3 times a day is mandatory. Apart from this, physiotherapy will also help you.

Hello- white discharge/leucorrhoea is known as shweta pradar in ayurveda and the major cause of it is mal nourishment of the body. Bodyaches are caused due to discharge problem. You have to take proper care of your diet and your sleep to avoid discharge. 1) avoid spicy diet and increase dairy products in your meals. 2) take a sound sleep of at least 9-10 hour a day. 3) use shesham tree leave bark powder and use it 1/2 tsp twice.
