While using mobile/laptop for long intervals continuously, eyes get exhausted. While using Mobile /laptop,make sure that the lightening in room is proper to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the Mobile/laptop screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. Above all, one must try to reduce the amount of Mobile/laptop usage or take frequent breaks. Dont use mobile /laptopcontinuously for more than 30 minutes and most important dont use mobile with low battery. The bright light of the mobile screen gets more focused on our eyes and this causes dryness of the eyes and thus causing weakness of vision and eye and head pain. Reasons Behind Eye Twitching!

MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Ahmedabad
Reasons Behind Eye Twitching!

Eye twitching, tics in the eyelids and spasms in the eye are pretty common. In case of eye twitching, usually the lower eyelid becomes involved. The upper eyelid may also twitch in certain cases. Twitches are not permanent in nature, and they leave after some time. In some cases, eye twitching may last for long durations of time such as weeks or months.

Eye twitching is not a critical medical condition. It is a temporary prickling and irritation in the eyes, which ceases after some time. Common twitching of the eyes is not related to any neurological disorder.

Here are some reasons which cause eye twitches:

  • StressEvery individual goes through some amount of stress, and the body reacts differently in different people as a result of stress. An eye twitch may be caused due to stress, especially related to strain in the eyes. In order to reduce stress you should practice yoga, meditation, perform breathing exercises and take a break. Reducing the stress would also cease the twitching in the eyes.
  • Tiredness: Eye twitching can appear when you are fatigued or very tired. Lack of proper sleep makes your body tired, and this might trigger eye twitching.
  • You should improve upon your sleeping hours and sleep more.
  • Eye strain: Vision problems and any issue related to the eyes can cause stress, which may result in constant twitching in your eyes. Whenever too much stress is imposed upon your eyes, they tend to react and twitching occurs. Any problem would make the eyes put in more effort, which results in strain. You should have an eye check up if you experience an eye strain accompanied by twitching sensation in your eyes. People who use computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones for a profuse period of time experience pain and twitching in the eyes. There is a 20-20-20 rule to be followed while using such devices, which reduces eye strain and reduces itching or twitching. You can also avail special eyeglasses for people who spend a lot of time on computers.
  • Caffeine: Intake of an excess amount of caffeine leads to eye twitching. Cut down your doses of coffee, tea, dark chocolates and soft drinks in case of eye twitching and you may observe an easing in the twitching.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol also leads to eye twitching so you must abstain from alcohol in case you are having twitching in the eyes.
  • Dry eyesThis disorder develops in people who have crossed the age of 50. People who use computers a lot also develop dry eyes, which leads to eye twitching.

Our eyes twitch because of a lot of reasons. You should know the facts right and avoid situations that lead to eye twitching.

one of the initial ways to treat nocturnal lagophthalmos is by simply wearing a mask while snoozing. So, we thought we’d try just that! We recently tried a pair of specialized goggles that provided coverage, comfort and a hot compress option by TranquilEyes. The Eye Hydrating Therapy Goggles not only helped seal our eyes and protect them from drafts and drying out during the night, they also blocked all light for a comfortable, undisturbed slumber. (An added bonus? The flexible, hypoallergenic goggles come with beads that can be conveniently heated in the microwave to stimulate tear production. The beads can also be placed in the freezer to reduce eye puffiness and relieve itch.) - See more at: http://allaboutdryeye.com/2013/04/03/sleeping-with-your-eyes-open/#sthash.rtGeFPvq.dpuf

Nothing is guaranteed. But safety of lasik surgery is good provided your prelasik checkup is normal. Lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not.

Hi, Take homoeopathic medicines - Schwabe’s Belladonna 30 and Euphrasia 30 - both thrice daily for 4 days. Use Euphrasia Eye drops twice daily. Revert back thereafter. Management: - Try to rest your eyes if redness is due to fatigue or eye strain. No other treatment is needed. - Wash your hands, hold clean water in your hand, keep your eyes closer to the water and dip the eyes by blinking the eyelids frequently in the held water in hand. Repeat it for 3-4 times again. - Avoid watching T. V. Working on computer or mobile, reading or frequently keep blinking your eyes to avoid dryness. Take frequent breaks in between. - In case there is itching, use a clean napkin or a tissue to wipe the tears and cleaning the eyelids gently. -Wear an UV-rays protected sunglasses while you are out in sun.

Eye Care During Monsoon Season!

Eye Care During Monsoon Season!

Monsoon brings joy as you say goodbye to summer – and your sunglasses (remember, they also protect your eyes from infection). Monsoons bring with them an army of infections that cause eye pain and discomfort, so don’t ignore your eye health this monsoon. Viral infections are known to thrive and spread during rains due to increased moisture in the air.

Proper eye care should become a priority during monsoons to help protect from infections like conjunctivitis, stye, dry eyes and corneal ulcers which can lead to blindness.

Here are some of the precautions you can take during monsoons to maintain good eye health.

  • Precautions are usually based on hygiene. Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands.
  • Ask your children to not touch their eyes.
  •  If you (or someone around you) suspect you’ve got or are getting conjunctivitis, wash your eyes gently and use a cold compress. The best thing would be to see a doctor.
  • If someone at home is down with conjunctivitis, wash your hands after administering drops.
  • Redness, irritation & itching are common monsoon-related problems, especially after too much reading, long hours at the computer or watching too much television, and most hospitals treat such problems with lubricating eye drops. However, if you have such a problem, don’t self-medicate – ask a doctor.
  •  Avoid sharing your towel and similar personal items with others, because infections mostly spread through hands, clothes and other commonly touched items.
  • Stye is a common eye infection that occurs during monsoons, and is caused due to bacteria. It manifests as a painful lump along the eyelid, and is normally treated with the help of a warm compress, though a visit to the doctor is highly recommended.
  • In case of red eye, avoid over-the-counter eye drops as they may contain steroids which can be harmful, and seek expert advice. Also avoid using contact lens during this period.
  • Wearing glasses when travelling helps.
  • Avoid roadside food.
  • Always wash your hands after coming from outside.
  • Try to keep children away from puddles and waterlogged areas. Children often like to have fun in or around such places but they are highly bacteria prone.

Is macular degeneration hereditary? My mother has it, and I’m wondering if I should be prepared.

Is macular degeneration hereditary? My mother has it, and I’m wondering if I should be prepared.
Hello lybrate-user. Sorry about your mother's eye problem. Macular degeneration has many causes associated with it. Let me enumerate them in brief: (1) age related macular degeneration. It tends to occur in certain people with progressing age. This is usually not totally hereditary. It is more so determined by age and many other factors like consumption of tobacco, etc. Though, there is an element of heredity associated with it, it is not totally hereditary. (2) heredomacular degeneration: as the name suggests, it is hereditary in nature and tends to run in families. It may vary in severity. (3) macular degeneration due to exposure to ultraviolet light, infrared light, etc. There are various other causes as well. It would be a good idea to ask your retina specialist in person regarding the type of degeneration that your mother is suffering from. That would help to predict whether you are at an increased risk or not. Hope my suggestions helped you.
