Hello Doctor, I got my dental surgery done yesterday where my wisdom tooth was removed after surgery. How long would it take for these stitches to dry. I also have issues with jaw movement as it starts giving pain. What would recommend me to do during this period. What can I eat during this period. Thank you.

Hello lybrate-user, pain and discomfort after surgical removal of wisdom tooth is a common finding. Normally the pain & swelling start subsiding after 48 hrs. However complete healing may take 7-10 days. Sutures if non-resorbable are removed after 5-7 days. Take soft semi-solid diet for the time being. Take your medicines as prescribed. Take good care of your oral hygiene by regular brushing & rinsing. Hope this helps, get well soon.

Jaw pain: jaw pain can be due to various reasons and mostly the main suspected reason is stressful life style. Which might lead to constant grinding of the teeth maybe in the night or during the day, leading to tenderness of the muscles supporting your jaw. In many instances it could be due to wisdom teeth newly erupting into your mouth or wisdom teeth erupting into your mouth in a wrong position or the wisdom teeth unable to erupt at all. All these leads to pain in the muscles around the mouth and can also lead to swelling and inability to open the mouth completely. In any case, you need to visit your dentist to actually find out the cause for the pain and appropriate treatment. I hope I answered your query.

Oral hygiene is important particularly for diabetics as high blood sugar levels can lead infections in the mouth. Smokers who are diabetic are at higher risk of oral infections or diseases as compared to diabetics who do not smoke.

I had fixed braces around 10 years back. Once in a while I also used retainer, whenever I felt was required. From last few weeks, due to consuming tobacco, My teeth have came forward and generated gaps within them. The gap which has appeared between your teeth is due to not using your retainers as prescribed. You should have kept using the retainers as long as your dentist suggested. Secondly the gap between your teeth is not due to tobacco but due to the relapse ,as the teeth which were moved by orthodontic treatment are going back to their original position. Needless to say, you will have to quit tobacco abuse and secondly since you are about to get married the best option in your case to fill the gaps would be to use invisible aligners, which can take care of gaps in the best possible way .if possible and if you have time then you may go for conventional orthodontic treatment with braces. It will also take care of your problem but this time do not forget to wear retainers as prescribed. It should take less time this time ,Since only gaps are there between your teeth. So consult a orthodontist and let him decide whatever is best for you .all the best.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures and / or artificial enamel filling or root canal treatment. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Until then apply a desensitizing paste (sensodyne tooth paste) on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min until you brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight will be better. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

Mouth ulcers are aggravating at best and may be extremely painful. Also called canker sores or aphthous ulcers, mouth ulcers can be triggered by various factors, including stress, illness, or simply biting your cheek. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. Mix a teaspoon or two of salt with a warm glass of water and let it dissolve. Swish the solution in your mouth from side to side, then spit it into the sink. Don’t swallow the salt solution. Repeat this a few times a day, generally after meals and before you go to bed. Apply some honey to the ulcer. Dab a small amount of pure honey onto the ulcer. This may help ease pain and reduce inflammation. Dry the area with a clean cotton swab first, then use a fresh swab to apply the honey. Look for Manuka honey, as it has the most potent antibacterial qualities. If you can’t find it, though, any kind of honey will help fight bacteria. Suck on ice chips. Stay away from acidic and spicy foods. Try vitamin supplements. Vitamins B and C may help to heal mouth ulcers For medication consult online in private.
