10 Best Foods for Your Heart

10 Best Foods for Your Heart

You only have one heart, and it works for 24 hrs a day. It never sleeps, so you have to treat it right if you want to keep it pumping for years to come. For a healthy heart, you have to boost nutrition, flavor and color in your meals and snacks. A variety of fruits and vegetables are good for your heart. Always try to eat foods that are in their natural form, as they come from the ground.

Find out how these 10 foods may help lower your risk of heart disease.

1) Fresh Herbs like oregano, basil, rosemary and thyme are full of antioxidants. They are full of flavor and use them liberally to replace extra salt, oil and sugar in your food.

2) Red Wine: before you read on, a caution is that too much alcohol actually is bad for your heart. Sipping a unit of red wine a day may be good by giving you two very powerful antioxidants in restorative and catechist. These can help you to increase your HDL cholesterol while lowering your risk of damage to arterial walls and subsequent clot formation. However, alcohol may be a problem when you are already on aspirin or other medications. Check with your doctor first if you have had a history of heart disease.

3) Salmon: The american heart association calls it a super food and recommends at least two servings of salmon in a week. You can have it baked in a foil with herbs or add with veggies in your salad. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and helps to correct rhythm disorders of the heart and reduce triglycerides and blood pressure. These properties also hold good for tuna fish and one must choose canned tuna in water or brine instead of oil.

4) Extra Virgin Olive Oil: though any kind of extra oil is bad for your heart, if you need to take in some oil, then extra virgin olive oil has a lot of heart saving properties. Only one should not use it for frying or over heating the veggies. It is good when tossed over salads or used sparingly over boiled or cooked vegetables.

5) Walnuts: a handful of walnuts, say 50 grams a day are full of antioxidants and fiber. They reduce inflammation of the arteries and reduce cholesterol. However, they also have high calorie content so one must be careful about the quantities consumed.

6) Almonds: Almonds are full of plant sterols and reduce the blood ldl and are good for diabetics. One must eat them raw for full benefits as cooking or roasting them may kill some of their beneficial properties.

7) Tofu is a high source of soy protein and can be added to soups or marinated or sauteed with vegetables for its goodness. It has a lot of heart healthy minerals and polyunsaturated fats.

8) Sweet potato is a good substitute for white potatoes especially useful for people with diabetes and heart disease. It has a low glycemic index and prevents sharp rise in blood sugar after meals. One can bake it and sprinkle with cinnamon and lime juice to make it super effective.

9) Oranges have potassium and antioxidants to lower the blood pressure and improve the vessel wall function.

10) Carrots are full of fiber and are one of the top heart saving foods by controlling cholesterol. Add them liberally in your salad or munch them raw for their power packed action.

In majority of the cases irregular menses are accredited to hormonal imbalance, but in some cases it may be pathological and secondary to some pathology of ovaries mostly. Now if you want to regularized the menses then you must establish permanent balanced first and this can be achieved only with homoeopathy, because in modern medicine we get only a hormonal support with a very temporary relief. But with homoeopathy you can strike the hormonal balance permanently which later on also give you regular menses even if you stop the medicine.

Dear Lybrate user, It is difficult to answer your question in this forum. PCOS requires a detailed study and frequent follow up. Ovaa shield helps to get pregnant. However, the answer is not that straight forward. Many other parameters have to be taken into consideration. One cannot predict regarding how many days it will take to get pregnant.

Macular Degeneration - All You Want to Know About

Macular Degeneration - All You Want to Know About

Even something as small as an eyeball, has multiple parts within it. The retina at the back of the eyeball is responsible for the clarity of vision. The central area of the retina is known as the macula. Macular degeneration is the deterioration of this part of the retina. Macular degeneration is age related and is considered as an incurable condition. People suffering from macular degeneration experience blurred vision, black spots and may eventually lose central vision while retaining peripheral vision.

There are two types of macular degeneration; wet and dry. The dry form of this disease is more common than its wet form. Of these, the latter causes more serious vision loss. Dry macular degeneration leads to white or yellow deposits on the retina leading to further degeneration. In the wet form of this disease, blood vessels beneath the retina start growing towards the macula and may pull it away from the base when they break or leak fluid.

There are three stages of age related macular degeneration (AMD):

  1. Early AMD: This is diagnosed by the presence of deposits on the retina. In most cases, ether is no vision loss at this stage but regular check-ups are essential.
  2. Intermediate AMD: A comprehensive eye exam will show the presence of larger deposits or pigment changes in the retina. At this stage, slight vision loss may be experienced.
  3. Late AMD: People suffering from late AMD have noticeable vision loss. Though this disease is linked to aging, the exact triggers for macular degeneration are unknown. It is understood to be a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. The presence of certain genes and their variants has been associated with a number of cases of this disease. Studies also show that caucasians are at the highest risk of suffering from this disease. Depriving cells in the retina of oxygen can also increase a person's risk of contracting this disease. Other risk factors for this disease are obesity, smoking, high blood pressure and a light eye colour. The side effects of certain drugs can also induce this condition.

Macular degeneration is considered to be incurable, but certain forms of treatment can improve vision and slow down the rate of deterioration. Treatment prescribed by a doctor depends on stage of the disease and whether it is wet or dry. Studies suggest that a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent AMD and lower the risk of its progression.

Patience is the key. It took nine months for your tummy muscles to stretch to accommodate a full-term baby. So it makes sense that it can take that long, or longer, to tighten up again. The speed and degree of this tightening up depends on a few factors, including: • What shape and size you were before you conceived your baby. • How much weight you gained during pregnancy. • How active you are. • Something you can't do anything about: your genes. You may find it easier to shed the weight if: • You gained less than 13.6kg and exercised regularly during pregnancy. • You breastfeed. • This is your first baby. NOTE you shouldn't aim to be back to your pre-pregnancy weight until about six months after your baby's birth. All About Paleo Diet!

All About Paleo Diet!

The paleo diet includes whole, unprocessed foods that resemble what they look like in nature.

Our ancestors were genetically the same as modern humans. They thrived eating such foods and were free of diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Several studies suggest that this diet can lead to significant weight loss (without calorie counting).

A paleo diet meal plan-

The basics

  1. Eat: meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, healthy fats and oils.
  2. Avoid: processed foods, sugar, soft drinks, grains, most dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, margarine and trans fats.
  3. Avoid these foods

Avoid these foods and ingredients:

  1. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup: soft drinks, fruit juices, table sugar, candy, pastries, ice cream and many others.
  2. Grains: includes breads and pastas, wheat, spelt, rye, barley, etc.
  3. Legumes: beans, lentils and many more.
  4. Dairy: avoid most dairy, especially low-fat (some versions of paleo do include full-fat dairy like butter and cheese).
  5. Vegetable oils: soybean oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil and others.
  6. Trans fats: found in margarine and various processed foods. Usually referred to as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” oils.
  7. Artificial sweeteners: aspartame, sucralose, cyclamates, saccharin, acesulfame potassium. Use natural sweeteners instead.
  8. Highly processed foods: everything labelled “diet” or “low-fat” or has many weird ingredients. Includes artificial meal replacements.

Foods to eat on the paleo diet-

Base your diet on these real, unprocessed paleo foods.

  1. Meats: beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork and others.
  2. Fish and seafood: salmon, trout, haddock, shrimp, shellfish, etc. Choose wild-caught if you can.
  3. Eggs: choose free-range, pastured or omega-3 enriched eggs.
  4. Vegetables: broccoli, kale, peppers, onions, carrots, tomatoes, etc.
  5. Fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, pears, avocados, strawberries, blueberries and more.
  6. Tubers: potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, turnips, etc.
  7. Nuts and seeds: almonds, macadamia nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and more.
  8. Healthy fats and oils: lard, tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil and others.
  9. Salt and spices: sea salt, himalayan salt, garlic, turmeric, rosemary, etc.

Try to choose grass-fed, pasture raised and organic if you can afford it. If not, then just make sure to always go for the least processed option.

These are perfectly healthy in small amounts:

1. Wine: quality red wine is high in antioxidants and beneficial nutrients.
2. Dark chocolate: choose one that has 70% or higher cocoa content. Quality dark chocolate is very nutritious and extremely healthy.

What to drink when you’re thirsty -

Glass of water

  1. When it comes to hydration, water should be your go-to beverage.
  2. These aren’t exactly paleo, but most people drink them anyway:
  3. Tea is very healthy and loaded with antioxidants and various beneficial compounds. Green tea is best.
  4. Coffee is actually very high in antioxidants as well.

A sample paleo menu for one week -

1. Breakfast: eggs and vegetables, fried in coconut oil. One piece of fruit.
2. Lunch: chicken salad, with olive oil. Handful of nuts.
3. Dinner: burgers (no bun), fried in butter, with vegetables and some salsa.

I am 19 years old female. I have been diagnosed with pcos. My scalp is very oily i. E. It requires hair wash almost everyday. What can I do to stop the oil secretion in my scalp? Excess oily nature is your genetic nature and daily washing is the best and possible solution, If you use too much lotions or cleansers , you will lose hair and have allergy or headache. For washing home remedies like remove the excess shampoo and styling product from your hair. Apply a one to one mixture of warm water and apple cider vinegar to your hair. Rinse it thoroughly after 5 minutes to get rid of the apple cider smell. Wash your hair every 2-3 days, for proper regulation of natural hair oils. Baking Soda Mix: Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate. It is sold in most supermarkets, health food stores and similar places. Before showering, combine one tablespoon baking soda with one cup warm or hot water in a plastic bottle and shake thoroughly. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly with water thenfollow with a vinegar rinse to condition your hair. 'Apple Cider Vinegar or Distilled White Vinegar Rinse: This of course, smells like vinegar. Don't worry though; once you have rinsed your hair the smell will go away. If it doesn't, you are using too much vinegar. Combine one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with one cup water in plastic bottle. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly. Lemon Juice: Combine the juice of one lemon with an equal amount of your normal conditioner. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly.

Is anal sex safe for both the partners? Even if we do not use condoms. Doing it on regular basis is ok or it has some side effects for the female?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
I would not recommend but if you still want to try :- Use plenty of lubricant (e.g. KY JELLY) to reduce the risk of tissue tears and minimize friction. Try to relax by taking a warm bath before anal sex.Lying on your stomach may make entry smoother. Stop anal sex if you start experiencing pain. If you experience bleeding or you notice a boil or rashes around the anus or a discharge coming from it, see a doctor as soon as possible
