Causes and Symptoms of Folliculitis

MBBS, Diploma In Dermatology And Venerology And Leprosy (DDVL), DNB (Dermatology), MNAMS
Dermatologist, Delhi
Causes and Symptoms of Folliculitis

Folliculitis is an ordinary dermatological condition which causes inflammation of hair follicles of the skin. This condition, which occurs due to both bacterial and fungal infections, causes small red or white pimples to form around the hair follicles. The infection, if left untreated, can spread and turn into rough, coarse sores which may take a long time to heal.

The Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is responsible for causing the infection, which leads to this commonly occurring condition. In some cases, folliculitis can be also caused by viruses and fungi which had perhaps penetrated the ingrown hairs causing subsequent inflammation. This condition is categorized and diagnosed as a superficial or deep infection depending on the amount of hair follicles involved.

Causes:

  • Friction caused by shaving or tight - fitting clothes
  • Heat and sweat, due to prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Skin conditions like acne
  • Tightly wrapped bandages or dressings on the skin

Symptoms:

  • Clusters of tiny red or white bumps in and around the hair follicles
  • Reddened and inflamed skin
  • Itchy skin and rashes
  • Pus-filled blisters that may crust and later break
  • Swelling on the skin

Risk Factors:

Anyone, whether young or old, may develop folliculitis. But, there are certain factors that increase the risks of the condition. The following are some of them:

  • Conditions like HIV or AIDS that reduces the immunity in your body
  • A pre-existing condition of acne or dermatitis
  • Being obese
  • Medications and ointments with side effects
  • Improper shaving

Many a times, people ignore this condition, presuming that it will heal with time. But if left untreated, complications such as large itchy patches of skin, increased swelling and heightened inflammation of hair follicles may occur.

I am having some sort of irritation while bowel movement and its seems that something has been stuck from last 1 week. I consulted doctor today he said that I am having an anal fissure. He gave me medicines for 1 month (Gutwin 400 and one more) and asked me to make changes in the diet and said it will heal. I am concerned about how serious is this issue and what time will it take to heal? I am not having any bleeding during bowel movement. Just a sort of uneasiness while sitting. Please help me.

Hello, Warm baths are soothing and they may help the back passage (anus) to relax which may ease the pain. A cream or ointment that contains an anaesthetic such as lidocaine may help to ease the pain. You should only use this for short periods (up to 5-7 days). If you use it for longer, the anaesthetic may irritate or sensitise the skin around the anus. You can obtain one of these creams or ointments on prescription. You can also buy some of these products at pharmacies, without a prescription. The cream/ointment should be applied before going to the toilet. A cream or ointment that contains steroid medication may be prescribed by a doctor if there is a lot of swelling (inflammation) around the fissure. Steroids reduce inflammation and they may help to reduce any swelling around a fissure. This may help to ease any itch and pain. You should not use it for longer than one week at a time. Wash the anus carefully with water after you go to the toilet. Dry gently. Don't use soap whilst it is sore as it may cause irritation. Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may help to ease the pain (but avoid codeine - see below). Thanks.

The stomach is hurting most probably due to acidity. The rash on shoulders and face could be a viral infection. If it is burning and painful in nature the you need to consult a dermatologist near your place so that treatment can be initiated as early as possible.

I have oily skin on my face. Can you suggest me something that I can have a good skin?

BHMS

I have oily skin on my face. Can you suggest me something that I can have a good skin?
You can take homoeopathic medicines – Berberis Aquefolium Q/ 10 drops in 1/2 cup of water/ thrice a day and Kali Brom. 200/ thrice a day – for 20 days. Wash your face with Bakson's Facewash (wash your face with warm water only) and followed by CTMP, i.e., cleansing, toning, moisturising and protection (apply liberally Sunscreen Gel with SPF-30) after washing your face daily. Use home-made remedies: - Take 1 tbsp of fuller's earth (multani mitti) + a dash of lime + bit of rosewater – apply this on your face till it gets dried up, then rinse it off. - Take 1 tsp of Alum (or fitkari), make it slightly wet with water and apply this on your wet face, spread it well; let it dry and rinse it off. Alum remove your excessive moisture or oil and it also tightens the skin's tonicity.
