Yesterday night during intercourse contraceptive (condom) came off. My wife has already taken unwanted 72 this week on last Saturday. Can she take another one? What other options to prevent the pregnancy?

If you happen to have sex on regular basis and don't want the risk of even accidental pregnancy, condoms are not reliable mode of contraception. I- pill is an emergency contraceptive and must be used judiciously. Its better to resort to more efficient modes of contraception like OCPills (if you want to delay 1st pregnancy, or intrauterine contraceptive devices like multiload or Copper T (if you want spacing between two pregnancies. Hormonal injections like DMPA and implants are other equally reliable options. As far as torn condom is concerned, chances of pregnancy depend on the fertile period. If your wife is in fertile period you may opt for I-Pill, but don't make it a habit as I-pill can hv serious side effects.

Warning Signs Not to Be Ignored During Pregnancy

Warning Signs Not to Be Ignored During Pregnancy

If you want to have a safe pregnancy by curtailing all sorts of complications, then you have to promptly respond to warning bells. There are certain warning symptoms that should not be neglected at all as that might put your pregnancy in danger.

  1. Bleeding: This kind of situation cannot be ignored as that often leads to serious issues like placental abruption or miscarriage. In this case, you are definitely in need of the assistance of any expert midwife.
  2. Swollen face or hands: Slightly swollen face or hands in pregnancy are normal, but if you observe excessive puffiness, especially on your feet and ankles, then it is a warning sign as it might lead to toxaemia or PIH. Therefore, consulting a doctor is very much needed in this regard.
  3. Abdominal pain: Round ligament pain is quite normal, and you do not have to worry about the same. But if the pain is accompanied by bleeding, then the danger of miscarriage might come into being, and thus you should be very much alert about the same.
  4. Blurry vision: Both blurry vision and dizziness are the commonest pregnancy symptoms. But if they get increased suddenly, visit your doctor.
  5. Itching: Itching is common during pregnancy mostly due to stretching of the skin. Your skin also becomes dry. But if it continues for long, then you should check the same with your doctor for avoiding liver disorder.
  6. Fever: Exposure to flu and cold viruses increases during pregnancy, as a result of which fever occurs. But if the fever lasts for more than 48 hours, then viral conditions can be expected, which are pretty dangerous.
  7. Unwanted back pain: Normal pain in pregnancy is alright, but excessive pain might indicate bladder or kidney infections, preterm labour, miscarriage or cyst. All these conditions should be essentially avoided to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
  8. Gushing of fluid: If you are not in labour, but are feeling wet constantly, then it is better to see a doctor. There might be a great possibility of breaking of water, and this is quite dangerous in the advanced stage of pregnancy.

Less movement of baby Experiencing baby kicking is quite natural during pregnancy, and if stops suddenly, then there is something wrong. Kicking patterns should be followed and then only you will be able to realize whether the baby is normal or not. If you are facing any of the above symptoms, then immediately visit your doctor.

Pill 72 is an effective medicine as an emergency contraceptive but it has few side effects. It can cause pain abdomen and irregular periods. Pregnancy will be avoided if medicine is taken within 72 hours of intercourse but it can cause menstrual irregularity so wait and watch.

Hi, Get an ultrasound (pelvis) done to rule out any cause of irregular menses. Reduced physical activity can also lead to skipped periods. You can increase you daily physical activity, get indulge into simple cardio exercises like brisk walk, jogging, running, skipping a rope, jumping, cycling, swimming, etc. Swimming is a kind of exercise which exercise every part of the body. Apart from this, you can also think of opting for other exercises like yoga, but do it under the guidance of a qualified person only. Yoga for irregular menses: 1.Trikonasana: -Stand on the ground with your legs apart (ideally shoulder-width). Begin turning your right leg at a right angle to your body. -Gently begin bending sideways until your palms touch the ground. -Now, raise the left hand and look at the tips of your left hand’s fingers. -Hold the pose for around 3-6 minutes. -Return to the starting point. -Repeat the asana. 2. Vajrasana: -Sit on the floor with your legs folded under your body. -Ensure that you keep your spine straight. -Close your eyes and place your right palm on your right knee and do the same for the left palm. -Inhale deeply and think about the healthy air you breathe in. -Count to 10 and release the inhaled air. Imagine the disorder leaving along with the carbon dioxide. -Repeat the exercise for around 10 minutes and rest. 3. Tadasana: -Stand on the ground with your feet slightly apart. -Your heels should be flat on the floor. -Keep your hands by the body’s side. -Gaze forward. -Hold this position for 2-5 minutes. -Rest. 4. Adho Mukhasvanasana: -Go down on all fours. To perform this asana, sit on your fours. -Begin raising your pelvis until your hands and legs straighten. -Ensure that your knees and elbows aren’t bent. -Hold the pose for 10-15 seconds. -Gently go down to the starting position. -Repeat.

Weight Gain in PCOS

BHSC in Dietetics, Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Science and Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Weight Gain in PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. Polycystic means “many cysts,” and PCOS often causes clusters of small, pearl-sized cysts in the ovaries. The cysts are fluid-filled and contain immature eggs. PCOS affects one in 4 women.

What are the causes behind it?
While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, doctors believe that hormonal imbalances and genetics play a role. Women are more likely to develop PCOS if their mother or sister also has the condition.
Overproduction of the hormone androgen may be another contributing factor. Androgen is a male sex hormone that women’s bodies also produce.

PCOS Symptoms
PCOS is a syndrome disease defined by a collection of signs and symptoms. The symptoms of PCOS that one patient experiences can be very different from the symptoms of another patient. If you have two or more of the following symptoms, you need to have a thorough checkup to determine if you need PCOS treatment:

  • Irregular or missing menstrual periods
  • Infertility
  • Excess or unwanted body or facial hair growth
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Weight problems, often including weight gain around the waist
  • Skin problems, including skin tags, darkening skin and acne

Does PCOS increase weight?
The answer is a ‘YES’. Most PCOS patients are overweight and are asked to exercise which helps control the symptoms but a lot many people have a completely normal body type.

What are the risks associated with PCOS-related weight gain?
No matter what the cause, weight gain can be detrimental to your health. Women with PCOS are more likely to develop many of the problems associated with weight gain and insulin resistance, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Infertility
  • Endometrial cancer

Many of these conditions can lead to heart disease. In fact, women with PCOS are four to seven times more likely to have a heart attack than women of the same age without the condition.

Benefit of Weight Loss with PCOS

Modest weight loss will not cure PCOS, but it will help. Weight loss can restore the normal function of the ovaries and result in normal hormone production. This may, in turn, lead to improvements in symptoms of PCOS, such as excess hair growth, acne or scalp hair loss.

Protect Yourself From Weight Gain

  • Eat Right: A healthy diet low in complex carbohydrates, moderate protein and low fat is important, as this can help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Exercise: Start doing low-to-moderate activities like walking or swimming for 30-to-90 minutes per day because exercise (even without weight loss) has been shown to lower or get rid of insulin resistance.
  • Lose Weight: The more overweight you are the more likely you are to be insulin resistant whether you have PCOS or not. Losing just 5% of your bodyweight will help lower your insulin resistance.
  • Avoid Stress: Don’t over stress yourself as it increases the blood pressure level in your body and can’t help to resist with PCOS. So, try to stay as calm as possible.
  • Get more sleep (at least 7-to-9 hours in a day): Not getting enough sleep can also make your insulin resistance worse, which in turn acquires you the weight.

DIET:

  • Cereals: Barley, quinoa, oats, oatmeal, muesli, bran flakes, whole wheat porridge, brown rice, multigrain bread
  • Pulses: Yellow moong, green moong, chana dal, beans, whole pulses
  • Dairy products: Skimmed or toned milk, soy milk, tofu, paneer, yogurt
  • Fruits: Berries, plums, peaches, oranges, papaya, pears, watermelons, apples
  • Nuts: Walnut, almonds, flaxseeds
  • Vegetables: Carrots, peas, broccoli, lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, onions, cauliflower, celery, spinach

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

Most important symptom of pregnancy is missed period. There r other symptoms but all of them appear 2 weeks after the missed period. Those r nausea, vomiting, breast fullness and increased urination. If you have a missed period then you should get urine pregnancy test done at home after 7 days of missed period to confirm it. Menses can also be missed by hormonal changes.

The reason is just psychological and emotional and nothing scientific in -----------it depends upon a couple when to plan a baby and if they are financially and emotionally ready for it or not-----------planning a baby immediately after marriage proves good to majority as per social thoughts and beliefs and there I nothing logical----------------but if you askme the same question, my answer will be based upon few factors like---- 1. If I am mentally, and financially prepared for it------------ 2. Understanding in thoughts with my wife--------------- 3. If my wife also feels the same-------
