Fried foods or food items that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats should be avoided as these foods can cause an increase in DHT levels (a by-product that causes hair loss).

Don't Forget Your Health on Diwali!

Don't Forget Your Health on Diwali!
Wish you a happy diwali

Diwali exposes you to fire, smoke, heavy doses of artery-clogging fats, sugar quantities much, much higher than your daily recommended intake. If you drink, there's the 5 days of fighting hangover with even more alcohol.

This dangerous traditional recipe can be overcome.

Pay attention to the following health tips - these are the bare minimum you need to stay fit, happy and healthy enough to party into the new year.

Burning up the air

Respiratory ailments are going to see a jump in city folk. These include allergies, asthma and pollution, caused not only by firecrackers but the number of people driving around delivering diwali goodies. Asthma patients should avoid firecrackers - especially those that emanate smoke. If you have to, organize a aerial-firecracker display early in the evening (9-ish), before the air gets clogged with sulfurous smoke. Keep your inhaler and asthma medication nearby before and after diwali.

Practicing mithai safety

More than avoiding binging on the mithai, the increase in food adulteration around diwali is what will hurt your health more. There is reportedly an increase in misbranded, substandard and unsafe sweets during diwali.

To keep yourself safe, remember to check the manufacturing and expiry dates, along with license number of packed products, and always get a bill against your purchase. Kaju and besan sweets are the safest - they have the least chances of adulteration. Avoid'chhena' and'khoya' sweets, along with sweets and milk products from roadside shops.

Diwali, snacking and weight gain

A sudden shock to both normal meals and regular sleep patterns comes from late night parties binge-eating'tanking' up on alcohol and lack of exercise. Instead, undertake a military-like mindset towards practicing moderation, especially towards friers food, alcohol. Replace oily snacks with a combination of fresh fruits, curd dips, raw salads, roasted food items and nuts like almonds and pistachios.

And, since being a monk during diwali is socially frowned upon, the drinking and eating out needs to be balanced with a post-diwali detox. This requires a change in diet, as will as ayurvedic massages and steam bath to leach out toxins. Replace carbohydrates and proteins with fibre and vitamins in your diet, and take more water.

I'm 30 years female and I have migraine What should I do.

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Migraine can be managed with lifestyle changes and medications, try muscle relaxation exercises. Relaxation may help ease the pain of a migraine headache. Get enough sleep, but don't oversleep. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. It's best to go to bed and wake up at regular times, as well. Rest and relax. If possible, rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas on your scalp. It is very important keep a headache diary. Continue keeping your headache diary even after you see doctor. It will help you learn more about what triggers your migraines and what treatment is most effective. A dose of riboflavin in appropriate dose as prescribed under supervision, also may prevent migraines or reduce the frequency of headaches. Coenzyme q10 supplements may decrease the frequency of migraines, magnesium supplements may also be used to treat migraines.

I have pcod since 5 years. I have taken treatment for 4 years but now docs says to go for operation. I am married 2 years back nd we have not planed for kids due to pcod problem. Is there any medicine to cure permanently from root. Sum medicine's won't suite me.

MBBS, DGO, MD, Fellowship in Gynae Oncology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Pcod is more a lifestyle disorder and cured by lifestyle chances only. It does not have any permanent cure. Along with medicine lifestyle and dietary modification can help. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, weight control, and not smoking are all important parts of treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (pcos). If you are overweight, weight loss may be all the treatment you need. Eat a balanced diet that includes lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. Get regular exercise to help you control or lose weight and feel better. If you smoke, consider quitting.

I am suffering from some problems such as anger, tension. How to deal with this, can I reduce all these with meditation or anything

MBBS, Diploma in Acupressure Therapy, Diploma in Acupuncture, Certificate Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy, Masters in Acupuncture
Integrated Medicine Specialist, Delhi
Hi Well done! By acknowledging that there is something askew, you have already taken the first step. Given our busy lives and social, cultural, financial and occupational sources of friction, nobody really is completely free from anger, tension and suffering. However, by regarding feelings like anger and tension as normal reactions to everyday stressors, you could take the bite out of them. What you could do is to welcome, observe and then let go off the feelings and the thoughts that accompany them. Very often our desire to switch off uncomfortable feelings and emotions causes more turmoil. Practices such as mindful meditation are known to be very effective in dealing with the issues you seem to be facing. You could go online and search for some guided imagery meditations to help you relax. Perhaps the most vital thing to remember is that our mind-body-sense apparatus distinguishes between what is pleasant and what is uncomfortable, and we automatically choose to run away from that which causes us discomfort. So, if you practice to not analyze or judge the thoughts and feelings that give rise to uncomfortable states, and not get drawn into these thoughts and feelings, but just observe them arising without participating in them, they, like everything else will dissipate. In short, let go- of expectations from yourself or others and realize that our tendency to like and dislike situations cause our responses to them. If you detach just a little bit, you might find that you can easily enter a space that is structure less and content less and you might just be more comfortable being who you are and content with whatever it is you have! My regards to you and my good wishes. I
