My partner is over possessive. He does not like me talking to anyone. I cannot have male friends. If I miss his phone calls he starts shouting and crosses all limits of decency gets into verbal abuse. Please suggest what can be done to cure this and how.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
This is not sounding like a good relationship, and your partner’s insecurity is going to be a problem, if you have not given him any cause. You must both go for relationship counseling and work out the insecurity. If he feels inferior to you for whatever reasons, then he could identify them and work on them to separate some fact from fiction too. If you on the other hand behave in a way to induce the insecurity because of your ways, perhaps you are more extroversive and jovial and free with boys etc, then these must be curtailed and sorted out for the good of the relationship. If his insecurity is unfounded then there may be a serious problem and if he does not work on it you may have to take a call. Abuse and lack of respect are not good signs of a relationship that is not yet in marriage. I shudder to think of what can transpire, later. So have a good talk to him and have him and you seek professional help before it gets worse and you are too far into the relationship to back out!

Hi! My dad is 63 years old. So this problem started last August, when we noticed that he is having some speech issue. It was like as if he is eating something and talking, when actually his mouth was completely empty. Then the frequency of this slurring increased in some weeks/months (can not recall). When we met our doctor, he advised to get an MRI done. On getting the MRI he concluded that it is because of diabetes and blood pressure that some muscles of the tongue are weak. Since november, my dad is controlling diabetes and blood pressure and has also lost 10 kgs (he was overweight, with strict diet and exercise he has lost 10 kgs and now weighs 80 kgs) So, the slurring problem increased and now its not slurring but lisping. We also noticed that his tongue is not able to touch the roof of the mouth. And there is always some burning sensation on some part of the tongue. We met a few renowned doctors but nothing was concluded. We met a neurologist, who recommended the following tests. MRI, diffused and contrast RNT THYROID ECHO ULTRASOUND OF THE NECK. All the above tests were normal. On meeting our neurologist the last time, he has given the following conclusions. He said - His tongue muscles are weak, And blood supply to the blood is not appropriate. And has given us some medicines. Although on his prescription he has written the following. D/d Multi infarct state e bulbar palsy Bulbar palsy onset AHC He has also written follow up to see for evolution/ evaluation of AHC disease. As you can see what he said and what he wrote was completely different. My question is I did my research on Ahc and bulbar palsy, yes it is very scary but some symptoms are not matching with the symptoms of Ahc and bulbar palsy. He also said - there is no test to conclude this disease, if nothing happens after having the given medicines. We will conclude that he is suffering from Ahc and bulbar palsy. Symptoms that differ His walking is perfect - daily walks for more than 7 kms His muscles are strong No problem with swallowing Please help me out in this.

Dear lybrate user, you can try consulting a dentist who hs done masters in oral medicine and radiology or in oral pathology. With aging tongue muscles tend to become weak n also mouth gets dry making them difficult to speak properly or swallow. Moistness of mouth also plays a role in speech. Wen a person loses mutiple teeth, the space available for tongue increases n tongue seems to noticably increase in size in older patients. This again causes difficulty in speech. With aging, weak muscle n nerves coupled with slight increased side tongue n absence of muliplt teeth or complete absence of teeth may cause incomplete control over tongue. Taste buds greatly reduce in number with aging causing bald tongue. Nutritional deficiency esp iron deficiency can cause bald tongue n inflamation easily.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Having sexual interest with other girls is never a serious concern to worry about. She can always change. These are some sort of impulsivity. These adolescent impulses seldom become serious. Don't worry. I suggest you to ignore it. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user. I can understand that you never felt self esteem and self respect from your childhood. But what is stopping now? self respect and self esteem comes from understanding our abilities and skills. That is due to positive thinking and attitude. You definitely will be having many skills or capacities which you should be proud of. Be proud of them such pride brings you self respect and self esteem. Take care.

Doctor, I am 18 years old and I am having strong dissiciative experiances like forgetting part of a day like what happened during afternoon or sometime the wholeday, I have big difficulty in focusing my attention around crowd, between crowd I feel like I am floating and please tell me something about what I am going through?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

The information you have given is very inadequate to make any diagnostic conclusion but it sounds serious enough to follow up with a visit to a psychiatrist. It is urgent and your cooperation is mandatory. You must also work with a counselor all through the treatment with your doctor. I recommend that you visit the doctor with your parents, equipped with your entire history from prenatal days and a history of the family from your grandparents, on both sides. This is the age when most pathologies manifest themselves for the last time looking for a resolution. If you sincerely work at this time, there is every possibility that your recovery will be complete and much sooner. If it is neglected, you can develop permanent negative traits into adulthood. So roll up your sleeves for some committed action and get well soon.

My age now 28 yrs. I used to forget names whom I met. I can't remember name of actress, Even frequently forget those name I have worked for long time. From very childhood I cannot remember poetry, songs. Though I have done well in academics & well established in a private company. But suddenly from 4 to 5 years I am also finding that I can not even remember definition, scientific laws or small paragraph. Is it a disease? Can it be cured. I found though in academics I am well but in case of memory I am too weak how to manage.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

Hi, I would like to seek help regarding my preset situation. I am 30 years old. My parents were looking for an alliance for me from 4 years. I could not find a suitable alliance for me. I was not doing well in my job also. I am good at work but can not handle office politics but I continued working only to support my family. Couple of months back I got engaged to guy. It so happened when I saw his photo I could not like him, later when I saw him through skype also I did not like. But my parents convinced me every time it is not right rejecting proposals now I have to take a call as I am running out of age. So when the guy came to India we met him, again I could not like him, I was totally confused. Sometimes I could feel it is ok I can go ahead with marriage later I felt noo. The Guy was well educated and financially sound as well. All kind of thoughts I could not control. I wanted to ignore everything and go ahead with marriage but the pain I was suffering did not allow me. I consulted a doctor he said I am suffering from depression and anxiety, I was put on tablets. We had to call off the engagement. Now after couple of months I have become alright. I am not working. Now my parents want me to settle down. The very thought of marriage upsets me. I think of the stage I suffered. Can you please suggest what I can do? I was not a person like this I was an individual capable of taking decision but not I am in this stage. Thanks!

If you are having depression or anxiety it is not your fault at all. Having anticipatory anxiety for marriage is understandable but there are ways of dealing with it. Your previous engagement had lots of uncertainties as you do not know the person well and so your anxiety is justified. If you feel better now then you can definitely go ahead for marriage. If you still feel very anxious and that refrains you from dealing with the decision of marriage then consult your psychiatrist and discuss it in details.

Hi eating sweet things is not a problem. Masturbation is a problem if you daily do it. Once in a week is not a problem. Hi I will prescribe some harmless but effective flower remedy available in homoeopathy shops. Try to buy original medicines. Mix 3 drops of olive + 3 drops of hornbeam. Mix these with 100 ml water and drink it every morning and night.(same dose. On empty stomach.

Do Panic Attacks Really Come "Out of the Blue"?

M. S. in Psychotherapy and Counselling
Psychologist, Jaipur
Do Panic Attacks Really Come "Out of the Blue"?

Panic attacks can debilitate a person greatly. The panic or anxiety attacks can be extremely powerful and intense, whereby a person starts hallucinating. The level of hallucination can vary depending on the severity of the attack. Such people often hallucinate about something bad or catastrophic striking them.  They lose self-composure. In extreme cases, they cut themselves off from the outside world and recoil into their safe zone (Agoraphobia).

Panic attacks, should, by no means, be confused with depression. These attacks can be essentially divided into three phases; the start phase, it then reaches the pinnacle or the zenith, before sliding down (fades away). The duration of a panic attack can vary from long to very long periods. The whole experience can leave a person depressed, traumatized and drained out (physically and emotionally). A timely medical assistance can prove to be extremely fruitful.

Panic attacks- its causative, signs and symptoms

A panic attack, can, indeed, come out of the blue (unexpectedly). Extreme emotional turmoil or anxiety can trigger such an attack. An over-excited nervous system might turn out to be the wrecker in chief, throwing life in jeopardy. A person might be unprepared to deal with such a situation. Though extremely difficult, the best thing would be to try and relax. The attack is just an extreme state of mind, an abstract feeling that can never come true. It will pass off soon. Panicking will only pile onto your agony. Identifying the associated symptoms can prove to be effective.

Some of the important symptoms associated with Panic attacks include:

  • A feeling of breathlessness, suffocation and dizziness.
  • The palms appear to be sweaty.
  • A person may complain of uneasiness or chest pain.
  • Increased palpitations are quite common during panic attacks.
  • A person might experience severe chills or heat flushes.
  • Twitching and trembling of the muscles are often observed during the attacks.
  • An intense fear of death or going insane grips the person completely.
  • Hands, legs, arms begin to tingle.
  • During anxiety attacks, a person loses the reasoning ability.

Few short-term behavioural therapies can be of great help. Meditation, yoga and certain breathing practices can effectively ward off physical and mental fatigue. CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a popular technique used to deal with panic attacks. This technique primarily emphasizes on the present conditions and factors resulting in panic and ways to minimize or completely eliminate the attacks.

If your depression is severe you need antidepressants or try natural depression control .5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.
