My cousion is suffering from loose motion for one week and he is only 8months old. Some says loose motion is due to coming of teeth can I get better explanation.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ranchi
This is a myth that teething causes loose motion. Loose motion in this age is usually due to viral infection or introduction of new food items. Giving plenty of fluid is the main aim of management to prevent dehydration. Antibiotics are usually not needed as it is mostly due to viral infection. If stool is mixed with blood or mucus it is suggestive of bacterial infection and antibiotic will be needed in that condition. Giving zinc and probiotic helps in early recovery. Watch for general activity and urinary frequency and if there is any abnormality consult your physician.

Improvement in personal hygeine will result in fewer incidences of respiratory infections. Never share towels, handcurchiefs. Avoid personal contact with person having cough and cold. Frequent hand wash, avoid feeding bottle or sipper and thumb sucking will be very useful.

There are number of factors to decide if any loose motion require treatment or just to change dietary habit. Nature, quantity and number of loose motion in a day are few to decide any intervention.

My child is 17 months old, he has got a vomiting problem. Even if he' s got a normal fever, he vomits several times a day. Even in coughing, he vomits several times a day. In a simple problem like crying, irritation, normal fever, teething problem, runny nose, he vomits several times a day. We diagnose him and medicine works but after few days, again same problem. What may be the reason? how to diagnose him better? is there any problem with his intestines? please advice.

Pediatrician, Pune
If there is frequent vomiting since birth / early infancy, as you have described he may be having gastroesophageal reflux, if his weight gain is not appropriate for his age ~8-10 kg, he may need evaluation for his recurrent vomiting, a milk scan which detects gastroesophageal reflux, usg abdomen may be the initial investigations to be done to find his cause of recurrent vomiting

I want medicine for bedwetting for my 9 year old son. Please help me.

DNB (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician,
Needs evaluation as to rule out primary or secondary enuresis. Don't just jump to medicine. Behavioural therapy plays the best role. Alarm therapy and diary maintenance are other alternatives.

My son is having allergies problem. Red eye & nose sneezing repeatedly. what hsould i do?

FIAP(NEONATE), MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ahmedabad
The best possible way while dealing with allergy is to prevent exposure to the allergens that is to say you need to avoid avoid contact of your son with all those things that cause allergic reactions. The present episode can be treated with cetirizine based on his weight. Warm regards.

Is it healthwise safe for a less than one month old infant to travel through train for approx 24 hour long journey?

MBBS, MD
Pediatrician, Nagpur
Is it healthwise safe for a less than one month old infant to travel through train for approx 24 hour long journey?
Ideally travelling for such long duration should be avoided as there are issues like feeding and privacy for feeding the baby is not available always. Also the baby may be exposed to unnecessary airborne infection during travel.

Initial few months bowels are irregular. No need to worry if baby is active & only breastfed. Don't use dulcolax suppositories even if the stools are not passed for 1 week. Use more tomatoes in the diet.

This is indeed a big worrisome infection. This happens with viral infection of the lungs and eventually turns up in a syndrome called ards. Where ecmo was needed. Ecmo removal is success but still stormy days aren't over. Pray to god. Hopefully it shall be fine.

Loose motions immediately after feeds are normal in newborn called gastrocolic reflex. If the baby is in nicu, there must be a reason for the baby to be in nicu, talk to your treating doctor.

Children below one and two years get frequent cough and cold due their general resistance is less. Some children are allergic to dust, pollution, change in weather etc. As the child keeps growing their resistance increases and the number of attacks (cough and cold) come down. But whenever child suffers take to a paediatrician and use medicines as advised. Take all the vaccinations accordingly as advised to protect and increase immunity. We cannot predict how milk a child drinks. You have to feed the baby as much as the baby drinks.
