Weight gain is a scientific process & depends on many factors. Even supplements and medicines don't work in isolation. You need to eat balanced diet and right food at right time to gain weight. Taking only three meals is not enough. Eat something after short intervals. Include high calorie food items in between your main meals such as dark chocolates, cakes, nuts, cheese, sweetened beverages, yoghurt to gan weight. Moreover I would suggest you to discuss your lifestyle in detail so to ensure you in positive energy balance and to get more satisfactory results.

My weight is 43 bt my stomach is increasing day by day, I won't take fast foods also, so plzz help me.
Hye. Thank you for your query. The fat you can see and grab, the kind that hangs over your waistline, is soft subcutaneous fat. Ninety percent of the fat on your body is subcutaneous fat. While you can accumulate this type of fat by eating more calories than your body burns, there's a genetic and hormonal connection as well. Too much fat is harmful for the body. A diet filled with refined carbs, such as white bread packaged foods and junk, snack foods, is associated with increased subcutaneous belly fat. Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise -- like a fast-paced walk or low-impact aerobics -- most days of the week helps you lose the belly flab. Alos, don't forget strength-training. You can't spot reduce, but you can tone and tighten your belly. While crunches and planks can help the abdominal area, include exercises that work all your major muscles -- arms, back, shoulders, glutes and legs is import for balance. Making the right food choices can also help you lose subcutaneous fat. Limit your intake of the refined carbs linked to belly fat. So, skip the white bread, packaged cereals, sugary cereals, biscuits, sweets and soda, and, instead, eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Enjoy healthy sources of protein such as poultry, lean beef, fish, eggs, soy, beans, low-fat dairy, and fats such as clarified butter or ghee, vegetable oil, nuts and seeds. Eating healthy foods is critical to reduce belly fats.

Healthy Weight Gain Tips:

1.Eat More Calories Than You Burn:

The most important thing you can do to gain weight is to eat more calories than your body burns. You need to eat more calories than your body burns in order to gain weight. Aim for 300-500 calories per day above your maintenance level, or 700-1000 calories if you want to gain weight fast.

2.Eat Lots of Protein:

Protein forms the building blocks of your muscles. Eating sufficient protein is required to gain muscle weight instead of just fat.High-protein foods include meats, fish, eggs, many dairy products, legumes, nuts and others. Protein supplements like whey protein can also be useful if you struggle to get enough protein in your diet.

3.Eat Lots of Carbs and Fat, and Eat at Least 3 Times Per Day:
In order to gain weight, eat at least 3 meals per day and make sure to eat plenty of fat, carbs and protein.

4.Eat a Lot of Energy-Dense Foods and use Sauces, condiments:

Here are some energy-dense foods that are perfect for gaining weight:

Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, etc.
Dried fruit: Raisins, dates, prunes and others.
High-fat dairy: Whole milk, full-fat yogurt, cheese, cream.
Fats and Oils: Extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil.
Grains: Whole grains like oats and brown rice.
Meat: Chicken, beef, pork, lamb, etc. Choose fattier cuts.
Tubers: Potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams.
Dark chocolate, avocados, peanut butter, coconut milk, granola, trail.

5.Lift Heavy Weights and Improve Your Strength:
It is very important to lift heavy weights and improve your strength. This will help you gain muscle mass instead of just fat.

6.Don’t drink water before meals. This can fill your stomach.

7.Eat more often. Squeeze in an additional meal or snack whenever you can, such as before bed.

8.Drink milk. Drinking whole milk to quench thirst is a simple way to get in more high-quality protein and calories.
Try weight gainer shakes. If you are really struggling then you can try weight gainer shakes. These are very high in protein, carbs and calories.

9.Use bigger plates. Definitely use large plates if you are trying to get in more calories, as smaller plates cause people to automatically eat less.

10.Add cream to your coffee. This is a simple way to add in more calories.

11 Take creatine. The muscle building supplement creatine monohydrate can help you gain a few pounds in muscle weight.

12Get quality sleep. Sleeping properly is very important for muscle growth.

I am not gaining weight. I am taking all type of foods and dry nuts but all in vain. What should I do?
Weight gain is muscle gain. In your condition your energy requirement is very high so whatever you eat is used as a source of energy and you do not make muscle. To gain muscles you will have to eat atleast 6 meals in a day at a regular interval with a proper ratio of proteins and carbohydrates. Proteins will help you gain body mass while carbohydrates will help you give energy. Protein foods are eggs, fish, chicken, milk and milk. Products, meat and dals. Carbohydrate foods are roti and rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes. You have to eat vegetables and fuits and use healthy and good fats for cooking. You will also have to do some weight training exercise to help you build mass into the body. Also drink enough water to keep you hydrated.

I have a desk job with long working hours. I am unable to get up early and feel lazy in the morning. What should I do?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. Thanks for the query. General weakness or feeling lethargic and not feeling like you are a morning person is a common problem faced by many. Basically, weakness is “lack of physical or muscle strength and the feeling that extra effort is needed to perform daily activities”. Weakness may leave you without energy to carry out day-to-day activities, drowsy or tired, sluggish, and uninterested. Other symptoms include excessive sweating, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty falling asleep. You can feel weak due to lack of essential nutrients, not getting enough sleep, a weak immune system, excessive drinking, skipping meals, emotional stress, and too much physical labor. Persistent weakness can be caused by health problems like anemia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, a sleep disorder, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes and heart disease. In these cases, it is very important to find out the exact cause behind your weakness. Diet is the main source of energy for our body. It is important to know that just eating two heavy meals a day will not fulfill your nutrient needs. Most often we skip meals especially when at work or in college. We start our day on empty stomach but our work or stress or activity is never reduced. This causes weakness and lack of energy levels. Food is our source of energy and if you don't eat well as per your needs you are going to get deficient in many nutrients. So, start by eating the right foods at the right time. Eat meals at frequent intervals. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, nuts, fruits in your meals. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Sleep well. So, to feel energetic and refreshed in life, you must exercise daily for at least 30 minutes, maintain your ideal body weight, follow a good diet, sleep properly, drink water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated, avoid alcohol and stop smoking.

Dear, Whatever you are eating now, you should probably double it. If you eat three meals a day, instead eat six. You need to be eating every 2-3 hours, and each meal needs to be the size of a normal meal. This is going to be difficult for a few weeks, because you’ll often have to force yourself to eat even when you’re not hungry. 500 extra calories a day = 1 extra pound gained per week. Whatever you’re eating now, add an additional 1000 calories (spread throughout the day), and you’ll put on 1kg a week. Not just any calories though…Eat a lot of good things – You need to eat a ridiculous amount of calories (probably 3500+ per day) if you want to gain weight, but you want to make sure most of those calories are GOOD calories. If you want to build muscle, you want to eat healthy calories that are loaded with good protein, good carbs, and healthy fats…which brings me to my next point: Protein = building block for your muscles. Chicken, fish, meat, eggs, milk, almonds, peanuts. Eat lots of this stuff, all the time. Pasta, brown rice, wheat bread, oatmeal, etc. Will help you put on weight, but a lot of that weight will be fat. Every meal should have vegetables and fruit. If you just eat protein, your body will resort to using it for energy rather than building muscle. Unless you’re eating tons of good fats (almonds FTW), good carbs (fruits and veggies), and protein, you won’t be gaining weight. Take personalised dietary advice. Thank you.

I suffer from GErD from past 4 years as well as cervical spondylosis. From past 2 days I feel shortness of breath, like suffocation and looks like there is no air surrounded and will stop breathing in sometime.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
Heat is an effective mean of reducing and relieving pain in cervical spondylosis. You can use hot packs at home. Some exercises like static contractions and strengthening exercises are needs to be done. Isometric contractions of the cervical muscles improve the muscle endurance and tone as the contractions improve the blood supply thereby the nutrition to the muscle is increased and hence muscle strengthening is done. Please see a physiotherapist for these exercises. You may need traction and soft tissue techniques for the management of cs. Postural awareness is very important. As the condition progresses, the abnormality of posture also increases, thus from the initial stage itself, postural awareness through proper advice and education should be planned and initiated by the physiotherapist. Best wishes.
