Menstrual cycle can be disturbed if you have an imbalance of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone. It's not unusual to have a hormone imbalance for a few years after puberty and before the menopause. This can cause your menstrual cycle to become longer or shorter. Your periods may also become lighter or heavier. Lifestyle The following lifestyle factors can also upset your balance of hormones and cause irregular bleeding: • extreme weight loss or weight gain • excessive exercise • stress Polycystic ovary syndrome Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) occurs when very small cysts (small, fluid-filled sacs) develop in the ovaries. The usual symptoms of PCOS are irregular or light periods or no periods at all. This is because, in women with PCOS, ovulation (the release of an egg) may not take place as often as normal. The production of hormones may also be unbalanced, and you could have higher levels of testosterone than normal. Testosterone is a male hormone that women usually have a small amount of. Thyroid disorders A thyroid disorder is another possible, but rare, cause of irregular periods. The thyroid gland, found in the neck, produces hormones that maintain the body's metabolism (the chemical processes your body uses to turn food into energy). Your Doctor may test for a thyroid problem by taking a blood test to check levels of thyroid hormones in your blood. Anaemia Iron deficiency due to improper diet intake can sometimes lead to irregular periods. So a thorough phyical examination is required regarding the weight History,Menstrual history,Dietary habits and any life style change that took place in her life.Only then we can reach to a diagnosis and can start a treatment for that particular problem

Planning pregnancy itself means you are taking menses into consideration too. Don't delay menses. It will disturb the physiological process and may lead into some other pathology. My advice would be not to rush in planning.

Health Benefits Of Chia Seeds For Diabetes, Bone Health And Weight Loss

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics

Health Benefits Of Chia Seeds For Diabetes, Bone Health And Weight Loss

1] Chia seeds help in weight loss –

Chia seeds help in weight loss by increasing metabolism. Chia seeds when taken as a pre workout snack will help in increasing your stamina to burn out more calories and stretch your workout timings. Chia seeds are full of fiber and help by satisfying your hunger. Making you feel full. Chia seeds can be very helpful in ladies with pcod and pcos problem. Chia seeds help against bloating.

2] Chia seeds help in diabetes –

Chia seeds have a tendency to absorb a lot of water and swell up, this helps in slowing down the digestion process and hence slow release of sugar in the blood. This helps a type 2 diabetic person to manage his blood sugar levels well. This will help in keeping you full for longer and hence avoid overeating.

3] Chia seeds help in maintaining teeth and bone health –

Chia seeds are super sources of calcium and all the other minerals that are important for bone and teeth health. Chia seeds actually contain more calcium than dairy products. For people who do not consume dairies, chia seed comes as a blessing in disguise.

4] Chia seeds improve heart health –

Several studies are being conducted on effects of chia seeds on heart health. A study at cleveland suggested that chia seeds improve blood pressure levels in type ii diabetics. The study also suggested that chia seeds have a positive effect on other markers of heart health. It improves the hdl cholesterol (good cholesterol), and decreases the bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels in blood of a type ii diabetic.

There are certain studies that have not been very conclusive of benefits of chia seeds on heart health. Chia seeds are good source of fiber, omega 3 and protein and they definitely are the best choice of food for your heart’s health.

5] Chia seeds are good source of protein

We all know that proteins are the building blocks of our bodies and proteins have such important functions that are crucial for life processes. Chia seeds are protein by 14 % of their weight.

This helps chia seeds to be counted as a super food for weight loss. It not only reduces appetite and makes you feel fuller for longer, but it also suppresses hunger. Wow! these features are just what a weight watcher desires.

Chia seeds hence make a super snack especially in the evenings when one tends to feel hungry and over eat snacks.

6] Chia seeds are full of antioxidants –

The department of food and nutrition of purdue university in indiana conducted a study on chia seeds in 2008 and found than chia seeds contain a very good amount of antioxidants.

Chia seeds contain following antioxidants:-

  • Quercitin – quercitin has endurance increasing properties. It gives an instant boost of energy for physical training. It also helps in fighting fatigue during workout, thus increasing the stamina.
  • Chlorogenic acid – chlorogenic acid may be helpful in slowing the post prandial release of glucose in the blood stream. It keeps the liver and the gall bladder healthy by regularising the flow of bile and not allowing it to stagnate. Chlorogenic acid may also be helpful in preventing and curbing the growth of certain brain tumours
  • Caffeic acid – caffeic acid may be of help in preventing colitis, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation and also certain cancers. It also increases immunity.

Chia seeds are a good source of omega 3 –

Chia seeds are advertised as good source of omega 3 fatty acids, but it is important to know the underlying facts. It is true that chia seeds contain more omegas 3 than salmon fish. But amongst the different types of omega 3 fatty acids, chia seeds provide ala (alpha linolenic acid). Ala has to be converted to its active form to be of use to us. However humans are inefficient in converting these acids in to active form. And hence their consumption would hardly make any difference or benefit us. If you are looking to supplement omega 3 in your diet, you could rather choose flax seeds.

Hi, my daughter is of 12 years old and she is on mensuration periods since last two months approx. Please suggest.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Hi, my daughter is of 12 years old and she is on mensuration periods since last two months approx.
Please suggest.
Hi, this is a very good question, every parent must ask. Every girl must learn the basics of menstrual hygiene so to avoid infection. She should follow _ 1- bathe at least once a day to clean herself & avoid odor. 2- cleaning of vaginal area and hands properly & frequently. Always wash vagina externally, with mild soap specially formulated for this purpose. 3- vagina must be cleaned from front to back and try to keep vaginal and anal wiping separate. Cleaning of vagina from back to front will increase the risk of vaginal and urinary track infection. 4- frequently change sanitary pads as dampness will irritate skin and will promote infection. 5- don't use same brand of sanitary pad for long duration. 6- avoid tight clothes & synthetic fabric as these will irritate skin and will increase dampness. Wear cotton & loose fitting clothing to stay fresh and dry. This care must be followed all through the month also.

I want to take medicine to dry the breast milk. Dr. suggests cbline. Now should I release some milk if breast get engorge? If yes how much and how many times a day. And if I lead to non release then does it have chances of mastitis?

FMAS, MS
General Surgeon, Gandhinagar
Respected lybrate-user hi yes you can take medicine surely. It's advisable to release the milk by circumferential gentle compression of breast area 3-4 inches surrounding areola 3-4 times a day with each session of around 4-5 minutes. If you do this if you have no pain in doing that it's better otherwise don't worry of getting future mastitis by not releasing milk. Thanks regards I hope you got your answers still some query you r welcome at anytime dear.

Hi there, sexual feelings are not something that can be induced by any medicines. There could be a lot of reasons why she could be avoiding sex, ranging from pain or discomfort during sex, incomplete satisfaction, or some interpersonal problems between you two. Instead of looking for instant solutions, communicate with her patiently, ask her what's wrong. An open communication is very crucial between partners, and your overall relationship has a huge bearing on your sexual relationship. I recommend you both to see a psychiatrist who practices sexology, to get to the root of the problem. Good luck.

Don't try to reduce your weight, in fact during pregnancy you need to gain at least 12 kgs of weight, so is there any vaginal infection because of which this pain may arise and this will be common if because of any infection.

Suggesting some investigations: Anti-phospholipid antibody test IgG & IgM, Lupus Anticoagulant test( dRVVT/ aPPT/KCT), b2 Glycoprotein-I, BT, CT, Platelet count, complete hemogram, repeat USG/ TVS. Therapy will depend on the inv. Reports. To arrest the reported continuous uterine bleeding for the time being, after excluding any retained POC, mefenamic acid+ tranexamic acid combination tab may be considered other than progestins. Ecosprin dose may be reduced. Once her acute condition is over, subsequently progesterone only contraceptive may be considered.

Know How Homeopathy Helps to Treat Allergies!

Most people, at some point of time, have been affected by allergic reactions. An allergic reaction is a hypersensitive reaction triggered by an Allergen (substance that has the potential to trigger an allergic reaction). Allergies can be Perennial or Seasonal. Perennial allergies are not season specific and can occur throughout the year.

Seasonal allergies, on the other hand, are season specific, for example, hay fever (triggered by pollens) is a common allergic reaction during the spring season.

A number of substances can act as a potential allergen, triggering a hypersensitive reaction in a person. The allergens can be

  1. Environmental factors, such as pollen, dust mites, sunlight, fur of some animals, or mold
  2. Certain foodstuffs like milk and dairy products, peanuts, wheat, soy, tomatoes, eggplant, alcohol or shellfish.
  3. Synthetic and natural substances like pesticides, nickel, latex
  4. Certain medications like sulfa drugs, penicillin
  5. Animal stings; mostly wasps and bees, can also trigger an allergic reaction.

The allergic reactions affecting a person can vary depending on the source of the allergen. It can be a skin allergy, nasal and cough allergy, food allergy or a dust allergy. The best way to treat an allergic reaction is to identify the allergen involved. Homeopathic treatments are very effective against allergic reactions. Though time consuming; homeopathic treatment provides long lasting and permanent relief. In addition, the homeopathic medicines have no harmful side effects. No wonder, more and more people are going for homeopathic treatments.

The following homeopathic medicines, if taken regularly and diligently, can successfully treat a number of allergic reactions:

  • Arsenic album: Many people suffer from watery eyes, continuous sneezing, running nose accompanied by a burning sensation. These all are signs of a nasal allergy. Arsenic Album is an effective homeopathic option against nasal allergy.
  • Sulphur: It provides great relief from skin allergies. Sulphur is a boon for people suffering from very dry and itchy skin.
  • Natrum mur: It is an effective homeopathic (natural) medicine against nasal and skin allergies.
  • Pulsatilla, natrum carb and aethusa cynapium: These homeopathic medicines act as a blessing for people suffering from milk allergy.
  • Urtica urens: If you are allergic to shellfish, Urtica Urens is just for you.
  • Bromium and lycopersicum: They are very effective against dust allergies. Arsenic Album is also an excellent option.

There are people who are allergic to certain hair dyes. Arsenic Album and Sulphur effectively deals with such allergies. Natrum Mur and Sepia cannot be neglected either. Do not allow allergies to make your life miserable. Switch over to the homeopathic treatments and enjoy a stress free life, sans the allergies. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.
