Could I get a rhinoplasty for a thick and wide body I have, it messes with my looks and I wanna know to what extent I can correct this. Thanks.

M.Ch - Plastic Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Bangalore
Cannot see the pic of your nose which you have uploaded. But yes Rhinoplasty can be the answer for an unusually large nose. However keep realistic expectations and tell your doctor what exactly you want. Thick skin means it will be a difficult surgery to give you great results. Please visit a plastic surgeon with photos of your nose in all angles to get a proper idea.

You will need to answer a couple of questions first. What is your age? For how long have you been suffering from this? Do you have any other complaints like giddiness? Have you done a hearing test (PTA) ?

Sinusitis - Ayurvedic Remedies For It!

Sinusitis - Ayurvedic Remedies For It!

Sinusitis refers to an extremely painful condition caused due to the inflammation and swelling of sinuses. A host of causes contribute to sinusitis, chief among them being allergies, air pollution or sometimes infection. It causes extreme discomfort, throbbing headache, sore throat and a blocked nose. Though different branches of medicines have tried in their own ways of dealing with this problem, ayurveda with its reliance on natural products as remedial measures have emerged as a clear favorite.

Some of the ayurvedic remedies for sinusitis are:

  1. Inhalation of steam with tulsi: The benefits of tulsi are widespread and need little introduction. The ambit of its advantages is expansive, making its presence felt even in treating sinusitis. In case of severe bouts of sinusitis, it is highly recommended that you inhale steam with tulsi almost every day in the week.
  2. Have ginger along with honey: Another way of treating acute pangs of sinusitis is by making a paste of ginger and honey. Make small tablets of this mixture and for most effective results it is advisable that you have it every day.
  3. Avoid certain food: Just how incorporating certain food in the diet help in reducing the pain of sinusitis, eliminating few, often times help you to achieve the same purpose. When you suffer from sinusitis, it is only advisable that you diligently avoid dairy products like milk, yoghurt as well as intoxicants like cigarettes and alcohol.
  4. Lemon juice and water: In the initial stages of sinusitis, having a daily concoction of lemon juice and water is considered very beneficial. During this phase maintaining a light diet is advisable.
  5. Practice pranayama: The gamut of ayurvedic remedies includes not only the prescription of what to eat and what to avoid but also several exercises that help in expediting the process of recovery. Among them, pranayama with its focus on control and regulation of breath is particularly beneficial in curing sinusitis.

Kindly take any ayurvedic medicine under supervision of an experienced ayurvedic doctor.

I have a problem of allergic rhinitis how it can be cured and what are the special remedies.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Some times what we think as allergic rhinitis is mainly sinusitis first thing you should go for ct scan of nose and sinus than treatment is based on grade of the sinus, if it is grade iv than no treatment is available or effective unless you get this corrected by surgery, surgery will give you nearly 80-90%. Than remaining you can treat with homeopathy than it will help. The bone of he nose gets deviated this leads to nose breathing problem if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusitis and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusitis. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopic ally. But if the sinusitis is grade ii or iii than there are possibility that you may get relief from symptoms.

I am a 35 year old male, actually I get some mucus kind of semi solid waste from my throat through my mouth which is very uncomfortable. Usually that will be present in your nose but in dont know why does it domes out from my mouth. What should I do?

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Aurangabad
Hello. The excess mucus goes from nose to throat via nasopharynx. That excess mucus production may be a sign of chronically infected sinuses. You need a clinical ent examination and if required further nasal endoscopy and ct scan of para nasal sinuses. Regards.

Septoplasty - Procedure And Risks

ECFMU, MS - ENT, MBBS, Certificate in Pediatric Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Robotic Surgery Familiarization (France)
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
Septoplasty - Procedure And Risks

The nasal septum divides the nose into two nostrils or airways. When this septum is defective in structure or position, it can cause several physical difficulties like breathing problems, sleep apnea, bleeding, sinusitis, etc. The surgery to correct the nasal septum is known as septoplasty. The surgery is very common and has a high rate of success.

Reason: When the bone and cartilage separating the two chambers is crooked and deformed, it prevents the air from flowing properly through either one of the nostrils. People suffering from this condition often breathe through their mouth and this leads to respiratory tract infections. So, the septum is fixed with the help of septoplasty.

Procedure

  1. First, your medical history is taken. A thorough physical examination is conducted and the nose is photographed from the inside and the outside. You may also be asked to avoid medication like ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin for a few days since these can increase the bleeding after surgery.
  2. Septoplasty is performed under general or localized anesthesia and takes about 90 minutes. Incisions are made on the inside of the nose and the mucus membrane is lifted.
  3. Then, the pieces of cartilage that are affecting normal functioning are repositioned or removed.
  4. If the nasal bone is causing the septum to be wrongly aligned, then cuts are made on the bone and it is positioned correctly.
  5. Sometimes, cartilage grafts (called spreader grafts) are put in between the upper nose cartilage and the septum to widen the narrow nostril.
  6. After this, the mucus membrane is put back in place and stitched.

Post- surgical care: A nasal support is put inside the nose to help it heal and keep it straight. The support is removed after two days but there may be swelling and occasional nasal discharge for a few days. The tissues and cartilage become stable within 4 to 6 months. You are asked not to blow your nose or cough and sneeze too much as these might displace the nasal support. The head is to be kept at a higher level than the rest of the body while sleeping and physically demanding exercises are to be avoided in order to prevent nosebleeds.

Risks: Septoplasty is not performed if the patient had high level of blood sugar or high blood pressure. It is also delayed in case of any kind of infection in the nose, mouth or in the respiratory tract. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

I am 20 year male. In my left ear nerves are weak. So I felt guiltiness every second. So, what should I do?

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Do you know that your ear nerves are weak? at this age group. And usually giddiness is not associated with weak nerve. You might me having history of vertigo or a hole in your ear. If you gone through all check ups about your ear then let me know. Giddiness is generally associated with many diseases. Such as low bp, vertigo, anemia you should also check for that.

I had done mri because Dr. Told he feel I having convulsion bt everything is normal except one thing 1) the right cerebellar tonsils is low lying and peg shaped What it means pls reply me and tell it is dangerous or critical thing.

MD - Homeopathy, BHMS
Homeopath, Ghaziabad
Well, it is a very classified finding that you have reported. In simple langauage if I say it will be like cerebellum is a part of brain and at the back of cerebellum there is a lobule like part known as Cerebellar Tonsil. In some people it gets shifted little down may be right from the birth it is like that and in some due to some reason it happens. At times most of the people does not have any problem but some might report problems like headache, pain in neck, vertigo, problems in maintaining balance etc. Convulsions or seizures could be another group of symptoms. It mostly is not dangerous but yes you to be under supervision of your Neurologist. With the help of medicines they might control things or if required they might opt for intervention depending upon the cause of this shifting of tonsils. It is believed that increase pressure inside the head can also cause this so it is better to discuss with your doctor and you can opt for second opinion also.
