I have a viral throat infection last week accompanied with fever all symptoms are gone and i am feeling better except that I still get dry cough and it's painful. I am taking expectorant cough syrup and hoping it will help. Any advice?

Hi, your dry cough which is mostly viral may not go with an expectorant. Taking foods/ fruits/ juices rich in vitamin c shall help develop your immunity which in turn shall be instrumental in fighting against all such infections/ illnesses. A few things that may help your cough are as follows: (a) warm saline gargling 2 - 3 times daily until your cough subsides. Then after, gargle at least once daily. (b) inhale steam twice daily for 2 - 3 minutes. Continue until your cough subsides. (c) grind a piece of black pepper and mix it with 1 tsp of pure honey - take thrice daily for 3 days. (d) ginger + tulsi tea twice daily. You may add a little lemon juice to it. (e) avoid cold, spicy, fatty food or drinks that may incite or exacerbate your already troubling cough. Hope this helps. You should simply avoid stuff, as mentioned above, should you be allergic to any of them. Do connect with me in private should you require still.

I am 61 years old retired. For the last 20 years I am under treatment for tinitus (year balance problem) on and off. The present doctor has prescribed diomox tab. Is there any permanent solution for the same. Kindly advise.

MS , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Hi. Going by your age, you might be having age related nerve weakness causing mild deafness and tinnitus. If you are having diabetes or hypertension then you might have tinnitus because of these conditions also. If tinnitus is because of above reasons then tinnitus is refractory to medical line of treatment.

Hi when water enters ear and your ear has wax in the canal then the wax swells up due to water which exerts pressure on the canal walls causing blockage and pain, there can be bacterial or fungal infection which can also cause pain. Dont try cleaning your ear with an ear bud, by doing this you will be pushing wax more towards the ear drum and also traumatising the canal wall skin. Its better to visit a doctor.
