Arthritis - Causes And Risk Factors

Hand Surgery, M.S. (Orthopaedics

Arthritis - Causes And Risk Factors

Arthritis is a disease in which the joints in your body swell. Inflammation or swelling can be caused due to body's natural response to injury or disease. It can cause discomfort in the form of pain, stiffness as well as difficulty in movement. Major types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and gout.

Causes of arthritis

Arthritis is generally caused by a combination of factors. It can happen due to genetic factors in case the disease runs in the family. Sometimes it can be caused due to injuries of the past; it can also be a by-product of your lifestyle. Some of the common causes of arthritis are:

1. Genetic makeup in which arthritis can be a hereditary trait
2. Physically taxing work life or injuries caused in an accident
3. Imbalance in the immunity system
4. Infections in the joint.

Risk Factors associated with arthritis

1. Family history - You can be prone to develop arthritis if it runs in the family. It can occur due to its hereditary trait hence making you more vulnerable to the environmental factors which contribute to developing arthritis.

2. Age - The risk of arthritis can increase with age. Types like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout are more common in the old age.

3. Gender - Your sex is an important factor as women are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis while men are prone to suffer from gout.

4. Joint injury - Joint injury caused due to accidents or due to sports activities can trigger arthritis. People with previous joint injuries can develop arthritis in that joint.

5. Obesity - Excess weight can put a lot of pressure on the joints, on the knees and hips in particular. Hence, obese people have more chances of developing arthritis than fitter people. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a rheumatologist and ask a free question.

Hello, After having liquor in a friend's party 2 days ago, I went blackout. Next day I woke up with calf and knee pain. It has happened with me before but every time it gets self cured after few days but this time, I am feeling an increase in pain. I have also observed hardening in the muscles of my calf. Is this a symptom of some serious rupture? What can be done to get recovered at the earliest. Regards,

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. I do not understand why you have restricted movements still if you have done proper rehabilitation protocol after you dislocation episode, anyways we will require a fresh mri of your shoulder to understand whats wrong. Also you should not be having persistent swelling of your ankles, is there any history of previous injury because you are saying that it is due to lax ligaments. Anyways we will actually need stress x rays of your involved ankle to see whats the kind of instability it is causing? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Nutritional deficiency, excessive stress & debilitating disease can cause ulcer. Exercise regularly. Have a balanced diet. Eat lot of fruits & green leafy vegetables & drink plenty of water. Increase dietary intake of vitamin B, folic acid, iron and use of vitamin supplements etc under medical supervision if blood tests confirm low concentrations Avoid irritating substances, such as… o Tobacco o Hot, spicy foods o Alcoholic beverages o Mouthwashes that contain alcohol o Products high in acid, such as citrus fruits and juices You may need Coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with Multivitamin cap, for five days in the morning after meals & antiseptic ointment or gel on the area of ulcer until then. Mouth sores are common and rarely cause complications. Most go away in about a week, but it’s important to monitor any mouth sores you develop. If you are concerned, or if the sore doesn’t seem to be healing, contact your dentist

Everyday when I wake up in morning a massive pain in my left leg so what I do to stop that pain.

Physiotherapist, Noida
Everyday when I wake up in morning a massive pain in my left leg so what I do to stop that pain.
There are many causes of non-traumatic leg pain. Pain in the leg may be present because of several conditions that may affect joints, muscles and nerves, as nerve compression at the lumbar level of the spine. If you are overweight, try to lose weight. If the pain in the leg is associated with low back pain, then a nerve compression is needed to be checked out. The back pain associated to a nerve compression can produce an inflammatory process that affects nerve roots, and starts traveling pain to the lower limbs and other symptoms as numbness. Muscle cramps are extremely common, and nearly everyone experiences a cramp at some time in their life. Cramps are common in adults and become increasingly frequent with aging. Increase water intake. Include physical activity in your routine ,walking is a good exercise.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Well there can be multiple reasons for low backache amongst which you can have degenerative disc issues, vitamin deficiencies, besides other things. I would like to know duration of your back pain and mode of onset. I would also like to ask you if it is associated with any leg pain or any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias ( electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. BHMS
General Physician,
It is raynaud's phenomenon and it occurs when the extremities of the body, usually the fingers and toes, change colour and may become painful. It is due to a narrowing (constriction) of the small blood vessels on exposure to the cold, or to a change in temperature, or to emotional stress. In most cases, the cause is not known. In some cases, it is a symptom of an underlying condition such as scleroderma, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis. The main treatment is to keep warm. Medicines to open up the blood vessels are used in some cases.
