Cochlear Implant - The Many Benefits Of It

Cochlear Implant - The Many Benefits Of It

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that is used to restore hearing ability in people who suffer from hearing loss due to inner ear damage. Unlike hearing aids which amplify sounds so people with hearing loss are better able to perceive them, cochlear implants directly transmit electronic sound signals to the auditory nerve. They work by compensating for damaged cochlea, the part of inner ear that converts sound waves into neural impulses which are perceived by the brain.

  1. A child who cannot hear will also never be able to speak.
  2. Inability to hear and speak puts a person at disadvantage in society.
  3. Simple tasks like talking on the phone which we take for granted become impossible.
  4. Conventional methods of learning like attending a classroom lecture become impossible.
  5. Brain development and intelligence is closely linked to development of speech and language.
  6. Inability of parents to communicate with child leads to emotional distancing.
  7. Integrating a hearing disabled person in to society becomes a frustrating experience for all involved.
  8. Cost of integration per capita in much higher when compared to cost of Cochlear Implant.
  9. Children with Cochlear Implants are fully integrated in society with normal hearing & speech.
  10. Children with Cochlear Implants can attend regular schools & colleges
  11. Early identification of hearing impairment gives children a better chance of developing speech and language skills, and of making the most of social and emotional interaction from an early age.

Cochlear implants offer a multitude of benefits to people experiencing hearing loss, especially infants and children with severe hearing loss who are just starting to process language and speech. Some of these benefits are:

  1. Hearing and communication – Cochlear implants improve hearing significantly, especially to a level where normal communication can be restored. It enhances the person’s ability to hear speech without relying on visual cues such as lip reading or hand signs. It makes telephonic conversation a lot easier. Cochlear implants also help people regulate their own voice and volume so that it is easier for others to understand them.
  2. Quality of life - It can help people with hearing loss listen to and enjoy music and also watch television with sounds. It helps people listen to sounds in a noisy environment and differentiate soft sounds from loud ones.
  3. Safety – Cochlear implants enhance the individual’s safety as it allows the person to be able to hear warning sounds like honking cars or ambulance sirens. This will allow people to navigate public spaces in a much safer way.
  4. Society - For children with hearing loss, cochlear implants can help them adjust a lot better to regular schools instead of requiring special institutions.
  5. Brain development - It can help infants with cochlear damage develop their speech recognition and speaking skills much faster.

Cochlear implants

  1. Only device of its kind that can restore a special sense.
  2. Consists of 2 parts-
    • One part is surgically implanted in the body
    • Second part is worn behind the ear and communicates with internal part using wireless signals
  3. Persons of any age can get a cochlear implant, from less than one year old children to 90 year old persons have received implants all around the world.
  4. Cochlear implants can be done for partial hearing loss also, know as Hybrid implant that preserves the residual natural hearing and augments hearing only in certain sound frequencies in which hearing loss is present.
  5. Are being used for indications other than hearing loss also like Tinnitus
  6. Surgery is a day care procedure for most patients.

CochlearConsult a doctor to get a clear assessment of whether you would be an eligible candidate for a cochlear implant and what to expect from the procedure. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hoarse Voice - What Are Its Causes And Treatment Options?

Any kind of abnormal change in the voice of a person is termed as hoarseness. It is a harsh, strained or raspy voice coupled with a change in the pitch and volume. Hoarseness is often caused by a variety of conditions such as allergies, GERD, smoking and thyroid. It has been noted that that hoarseness is not a medical condition but a symptom of a disease. For you to get a clearer picture of the condition, here are some of the causes and possible treatment measures for the condition.

Causes of Hoarse Voice
The conditions which result in hoarse voice as one of their symptoms include:

  1. Laryngitis: This is one of the most common conditions that cause hoarseness. In this condition, the vocal cords become inflamed which is mostly due to a viral infection. This problem is worsened due to other problems like reflux of acid from stomach into the throat and environmental pollution. Strep throat and epiglottitis are specific types of Laryngitis caused by a particular virus or affliction of a particular site in the voice box.
  2. Vocal nodules: In this condition small nodules develop on the Vocal cords. Also known as Singer’s nodules, these are common in professional singers, teachers and other professionals who overuse their voice.
  3. Vocal Polyps: These are small masses that may develop on the vocal cords and prevent them from vibrating normally resulting in a hoarse voice. They may be a result of repeated episodes of laryngitis or acid reflux
  4. Myasthenia Gravis: In this condition, the muscles become weak. This is basically a neuromuscular disorder and hoarseness in voice is one of its symptoms.
  5. Vocal cord paralysis: One of the two vocal cords may stop moving and lose its function. This can be due to a variety of conditions like thyroid gland swelling, tuberculosis or tumors
  6. Throat Cancer: Hoarseness of voice is one of the earliest signs of cancer of the voice box. If caught early this type of cancer can be treated. Smokers beware!

Treatment of Hoarse Voice
Some of the treatment measures for hoarse voice are:

  1. Medication – General medication to reduce swelling of the vocal cords, medicines to reduce reflux of acid from stomach into the throat, medicines to reduce pain and strain in the voice box are generally recommend.
  2. Surgery Certain conditions like Vocal polyps, nodules need to be removed surgically. Micro-laryngeal surgery is used for such type of lesions. Using a microscope with laser and without any external cuts or stitches these problems can be tacled easily.
  3. Phonosurgery This is a highly specialized type of surgery using which a surgeon can make your voice more like you want it. The pitch of voice can be altered surgically, Meaning that your voice can be made more masculine, more feminine, deeper or more shrill according to your preference.
  4. Cancer treatment – Depending upon the stage of throat cancer the treatment varies and may include surgery or radiotherapy or both.
  5. Voice rest and Vocal hygiene – Along with the primary treatment depending upon the exact cause of hoarseness, measures like voice rest and speech exercises to improve voice may be advised by your doctor. The right cause and the right treatment for your hoarse voice can only be determined by a doctor.

If it is only water you can remove it by gently massaging your outer ear with a dry towel or directing warm air from a hair dryer towards your ear. However you might be suffering from Swimmer's ear, a condition in which fungus develops in the ear and causes pain. This needs proper medication and treatment.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis and if it is occurring regularly when I go outside due to allergies it enhances so what are the remedies to control it or to completely eradicate sinusitis please give accurate measures.

MBBS, MS - ENT, Fellowship In Otology
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Nose blockage, running nose, sneezing, itching around the nose along with headache or heaviness are the symptoms of sinusitis. Causes of sinusitis are viruses, bacteria or fungus. Treatment of sinusitis depends on the exact cause, duration and whether you have secondary problems caused by the sinusitis such as polyps in the nose or not. Hence eradication of the disease in your case would require investigation to answer all these questions.

Vertigo is only a symptom just like pain is only a symptom of underlying disease. Cause of vertigo needs to be found out using appropriate investigations, only then can it be treated permanently.

Such symptoms developing after many years of same activity are suggestive of a change in your vestibular system (body's balance mechanism). You need to undergo some investigations to find out the cause and to rule out a sinister problem.
