Dear Shahanas Ji, I appreciate that you are a “ theists” (believe in super/devine power). This super powder gives us a mental peace & build a self confidence in us. Though your question is not totally related to medical science, but I am feeling pleasure in replying your question because where medical science fails, definitely there is a supreme power beyond the science. So it doesn’t matter that what is our religion, where we pray, in which way or words we pray and when we pray is also not a matter. So, as related to medical science it is advisable to take a proper night sleep at least 7 to 8 hours every day

Sleeplessness - 4 Types + Homeopathic Treatment

CGO, BHMS (Silver Medalist)
Homeopath, Noida
Sleeplessness - 4 Types + Homeopathic Treatment

Sleeplessness and role of homeopathy in treating it.

"A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book." Irish Proverb

Sleep has a profound effect on our physical, emotional and mental well-being. You must have realised so often that we feel very fresh and energetic after a good night's sleep. And, when we do not have a good night's sleep, we feel tired and irritable the whole day, our productivity decreases, we are feeling sleepy, and our whole schedule goes haywire. Sleep is the time when body undergoes repair and detoxification. Poor sleep patterns are linked to poor health and those who sleep less than six hours a night have a shorter life expectancy than those who sleep for longer.

When you sleep your muscles are relaxed during sleep and some blood circulation meant for the brain is diverted towards the muscles to repair them. A person is said to be suffering from sleeplessness or insomnia when he/she wakes up frequently during the night or too early in the morning or has difficulty in falling asleep.

Insomnia can be classified in the following ways

1. Primary insomnia: it refers to sleep problems which aren't directly related with any health condition.

2. Secondary insomnia: it stands for sleep problems that may be caused by health conditions, medications, pain or any other causes.

3. Acute insomnia: it is also known as short-term insomnia and usually lasts for a night or a few weeks.

4. Chronic insomnia: insomnia is described as long-term or chronic if you suffer from it for about 3 nights a week for 1 month or longer.

Common causes of sleeplessness:

When it comes to causes, there are several such as -

  1. Anxiety
  2. Stress
  3. Pain or discomfort while sleeping
  4. Use of certain medications
  5. Interference in your normal sleep schedule
  6. Having heavy meals or stimulants like caffeinated drinks and nicotine

In addition, there are also some medical conditions that can develop or aggravate insomnia, such as,

  1. Asthma
  2. Low back pain
  3. Chronic pain
  4. Arthritis
  5. Neurological conditions such as parkinson's disease

How does homeopathy help in treating insomnia

Since sleep disorder is of critical concern, homeopathy treatment offers an excellent remedy as it doesn't involve any side effects. A professional homeopath first studies the symptoms of the disorder and offers remedy accordingly. These remedies go to the root cause of the problem and are not meant to just provide symptomatic relief, apart from the medicine, you will be guided about certain lifestyle changes they should make.

Make some lifestyle changes like: Diet: it is always important to watch your diet. You are what you eat. Eat what your body needs, reduce refined foods, processed foods and increase the amount of whole grains and fruits and vegetables. Eating small frequent meals goes a long way. Reduce intake of saturated fats; include more lean meats. Choose grilling and steaming over frying and roasting. Recommended foods - Healthy carbohydrates, Fiber-rich foods, Heart-healthy fish and Good fats. Foods to avoid - Saturated fats, Trans fats, Cholesterol and Sodium Exercise: Every week, make sure about 2 hours is dedicated to physical activity. This could include any exercise of your choice, brisk walking, swimming, cycling, aerobics, hiking, jogging, skipping, gymnastics, or playing games like football or basketball. While in most cases, the person can do these on their own, in some people, supervision may be required. Watch your weight: controlling weight to a desirable level of BMI of 18 and 23 is very important. Obesity is one of the predisposing factors for diabetes heart diseases, and reducing weight controls the onset of diabetes and helps the progression of symptoms in diabetics. Smoking: Another risk factor for diabetes onset, palpitation, sleeplessness. Quitting is the best option. If not feasible, reducing smoking and gradually quitting should be aimed at. Not just diabetes, the effects on overall health will be evident almost immediately after quitting. Stress management: there is no getting away from stress. Everybody has their stresses but the trick is to manage it well. Whether it is music or meditation or medication or counselling, make sure stress levels are managed. This also helps prevent complications like heart disease and stroke and promotes well-being.

10 Easy Tips For Staying Healthy In Winter

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
10 Easy Tips For Staying Healthy In Winter

1. Boost immunity

It’s important to take care of our health throughout the year but during the winter months it becomes even more essential. Eating well, getting enough sleep and staying active are all important during winter to help keep you and your family healthy and to support your immune systems. Supplements containing herbs and nutrients such as echinacea, garlic, vitamin c, and zinc will help to support healthy immune function.

2. Keep moving

While it’s a little harder to find the motivation to exercise when it is cold outside, remember that keeping active during winter is essential to support our health and wellbeing. Moving your exercise indoors during winter will help to keep you warm as well as fit and healthy. Be sure to spend time warming up before you start your exercise as it can take a little longer for your joints to loosen up in the cold weather.

3. Eating well

As winter sets in it can be tempting to start eating more of those warm comfort foods that are often high in fat, salt and sugar. Instead, find comfort in foods such as warming and nourishing soups and stews full of flavour and healthy vegetables. Be sure your diet includes winter fruit and vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals such as sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, kiwi fruit, mandarins, bananas, garlic and ginger.

4. Weight management

Ditching the exercise as well as the salads during winter can often lead to weight gain. While it may only be a small weight gain, it begins to add up as you get more and more winters under your belt! although it’s tempting to hide behind those bulky winter clothes, by sticking to your healthy diet and exercise routine all year round, you’ll be much healthier in the long run and won’t dread the next swimming season with the kids!

5. Sleeping well

Proper sleep (eight hours for an adult) can help keep the body's immune system healthy and fight off colds. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes as these substances can affect the quality of your sleep. Regular, moderate exercise, relaxation techniques and establishing a regular sleep routine may help to promote improved sleep.

6. Skin health

The cold weather can affect our skin and contribute to conditions such as dry, itchy skin, chill blains and eczema. This may be due to the reduced humidity, drinking less water than you would during summer or possibly due to reduced circulation which may decrease the flow of blood and nutrients to the skin. Using moisturisers daily may help to keep the skin moist and supple whilst supplements containing vitamin e or garlic help assist blood circulation. If any of your family suffers psoriasis or eczema, try taking fish oils. These provide omega-3 which can help manage these itchy skin conditions. And don’t forget the sunscreen, it is important to remember we can still get sunburnt when the weather is cold!

7. Keeping bugs at bay

Although we can do a lot to support our health and immunity during winter it is not always possible to avoid catching a cold or flu. The viruses that cause colds are spread by sneezing, coughing and hand contact. Wash or sanitise your hands regularly and avoid close contact with someone who has a cold. Keep household surfaces clean as well as kids’ toys when someone in the family has a cold. If you are ill, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, including water, hot tea and soup. Avoid alcohol and caffeine and get plenty of sleep. Supplements such as vitamin c, zinc and echinacea may help relieve the symptoms and reduce the duration of a cold.

8. Stress and healthy mood

While stress is a part of everyday life, and some stress helps us to meet challenging situations, excessive amounts of stress may be linked to negative effects across a range of areas. Stress can lower the resistance to nasty bugs by depressing the immune system. Importantly, stress increases your need for dietary magnesium which is important for muscle and nerve function. Many of the b vitamins e. G. B1, b5, b6 and b12 are also needed for a healthy nervous system. The herb st john's wort may help to relieve nervousness, irritability and help support emotional balance. It may also be beneficial to help promote healthy mood balance but speak to your doctor or healthcare practitioner before starting a supplement like this.

9. Circulation

During winter our hands and feet can often feel cold. Our hands and feet are at the extremities of our bodies which means they are the furthest from the heart which is pumping blood around our body to help keep us warm. Vitamin e and the herb ginkgo help to support peripheral blood circulation, thereby alleviating cold hands and feet. Keep moving with gentle exercise to help improve circulation to the extremities of the body and don’t forget your socks and gloves! if you can’t seem to keep your hands warm (and it’s not bothering you excessively) take solace in the old saying “cold hands, warm heart”!

10. Stay hydrated

Don’t forget to keep drinking water! as the weather cools down and our thirst decreases it is easy to forget to drink enough water. You still need to aim for about two litres/day of water during winter as it is essential for our body to function. If you struggle with plain water (like we do sometimes) try herbal tea. There are so many flavours available now that you’re sure to find some you enjoy.

Sleeping Naked ! Can Boost Your Post Marital Sexual Life

Sleeping Naked ! Can Boost Your Post Marital Sexual Life

Sometimes it is the simplest things that can really amp up your marriage, sleeping naked is one of those simple things you can do to improve your marriage.

First off sleeping naked is quite freeing both physically and psychologically. Baring yourself while you sleep with your spouse builds trust both physically (oxytocin is thanked for this) and psychologically.

The act of sleeping naked is simply sexy and appealing to your partner.

That skin to skin feeling also makes you feel sexy. Skin on skin contact releases the hormone oxytocin which increases the feelings of comfort.

This may put you in the mood for sex.

Oxytocin has other benefits as well like making you feel more aroused, increasing feelings of trust, lowers heart rate, reduces blood pressure and simply makes you more ready for sexual interaction.

Of course healthy spouses are happy spouses. Sleeping naked has been scientifically proven to improve health.

Being close to your spouse and cuddling while you sleep is actually beneficial your health.

Your skin can absorb more nutrients.

Your metabolism will also improve because your body will have to work while you sleep to maintain that healthy body temperature of 98.6.

For both men and women sleeping naked allows their genitals to “air out”. Your genitals are covered up all day, everyday which makes it an ideal environment for the overgrowth of yeast and bacteria which can lead to infection and discomfort.

Sleep Benefits

More sound sleep equals less overall stress.

Feeling less stressed means less arguing and nit picking in marriages.

You may not believe it, but having a lower body temperature while you sleep actually helps you to rest better.

This is also an ideal environment for the anti-aging hormones to do their job.

Sexual Benefits

Sleeping naked is also fun. What better way to end the day than to be skin to skin with your spouse.

It is an intimate way to sleep and will make you feel closer to your spouse.

The skin to skin contact is a great way to get that intimate alone time that you cannot get anywhere else.

There have been nights when we go to bed exhausted and yet we are naked. Through out the night we are touching a feeling each other.

As a new day arrives and the house is quiet we find the perfect time to enjoy one another sexual and start our day off on the right track.

Free yourself from wearing clothes at night! Sleeping naked is a empowering situation for both of you!

Insomnia And it's Causes

Ph. D - Alternative Medicine, PG Diploma in Psycological Counseling

Insomnia And it's Causes

Insomnia is the condition of acute sleeplessness, and it takes a heavy toll on your mood, your energy levels, and your ability to concentrate and work during the day. Some of the most common symptoms of the condition are:

  • You find it difficult to fall asleep even if you are tired
  • Once you wake up in the middle of the night, you cannot get back to sleep
  • You cannot work or concentrate on anything during the day
  • You stay mostly fatigued, or irritated throughout the day
  • You have to depend on pills or alcohol to fall asleep.
  • You wake up very early in the morning, no matter how late you sleep

What could be the causes for insomnia?

Insomnia might last just a few days if it is induced by some temporary cause, like stress at your workplace, or any other personal issue you can be facing. However, when the cause is a long rooted one, insomnia might persist for a long time. There can be a mix of many causes for that to happen:

  • Psychological stress or other emotional discomforts - Common psychological problems like anxiety, depression, chronic work stress, grief, and also bipolar disorder can be the causes for insomnia.
  • Illness or other medical problems - There can be many medical causes or other illnesses at the root of insomnia like allergies, acute asthma, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, kidney related diseases and cancer as well.
  • Medications - There can be many drugs, which might be prescribed by your doctor, but still be responsible for insomnia. These include antidepressants, corticosteroids like thyroid hormone medicines, few blood pressure medications, certain contraceptives and stimulants for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
  • Sleep Disorders - Insomnia, though in itself is a sleep disorder, can also be the symptoms for other sleep disorders like sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and other disorders related to jet lag or if you are working on a late night shift.

In addition to these causes, some daily lifestyle habits might act as triggers to insomnia, which include:

  • Consumption of large amounts of caffeine on a regular basis
  • Developing irregular sleep schedules
  • Taking your smartphone to bed and ending up spending a lot of time with it in the night
  • Eating late in the evening

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist and ask a free question.
