Hi. Acute pain in knees while running is not normal. There may be a problem in your knee cap or meniscus or any cartilage in knee joint. This has to be clinically evaluated and appropriately treated. I would also advise you to stop running as it might make the matter more worse until you get your problem evaluated.

You can do warm up such as brisk walk for 15 minutes then do stretching exercises for major muscle groups such as hamstrings. Quadriceps.neck. Low back calf etc And for diet cut down on caffeine and alcohol. Add lots of greens and fruits which can help hydrate muscles and reduce stiffness.

Hello, I met an accident 1 week ago. As I was wearing riding jacket which meant for safety I managed to survive any brutal injury, only my right shoulder has faced injury i.e. Dislocation of acromioclavicular joint. Now, the doctor advised me to use hand bag for 3 week. The problem is that I don't want to show it in my home. I hope you understand my query. Is there any other way other than using hand bag. You need to fully immobilize your shoulder and so need a sling and brace. If you continue to move arm and dislocation gets worse you will need surgical repair of the torn tendons. And several Physiotherpy sessions after surgery to get movement back You decide based on risks involved. Good luck.

The pain may be due to tight calf or hamstring muscles. It can an also be referred pain from low back. You need to consult a Physiotherapist for proper treatment plan.

If you have leg pain then you have to rule out the casues for having leg pain. First of all check your weight and your haemoglobin levels, as Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there are no issues with the knee joint or back pain. If not if the pain radiates down the back of thigh and legs then it might be due to sciatica. Kindly consult the nearby physiotherapist. Hope you recover soon from the leg pain.

• Apply Hot Fomentation twice daily • . Avoid bending in front. • Postural Correction- Sit Tall, Walk Tall. • Extension Exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. • Bhujang Asana -- Lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. • Core Strengthening Exercises- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Shoulder Pain And Its Causes!

The shoulder is one of the most important joints in the body that uses a ball and socket to join the arm to the rest of the body. Any pain can make it difficult to carry out motion in a comfortable manner. The shoulder consists of the long arm bone called the humerus, the collarbone or the clavicle, as well as the shoulder blade called the scapula. A layer of cartilage provides essential padding to the bones in this area and its two main joints. There are a number of issues that can cause shoulder pain. Let us get to know the six most common ones. 

  1. Rotator Cuff Injury: This is the most common cause of shoulder pain and it occurs when the four muscles or the tendons are injured. These muscles and tendons usually control the movement of the arm. This injury can involve strains and tears which may also be caused by constant lifting of heavy objects. 
  2. Rotator Cuff Tendonitis: This condition affects the tendons and muscles that help in moving the arm freely. This usually happens due to inflammation in the tendons. It is commonly experienced by patients who are actively involved in sports and other heavy physical pursuits in their line of work. 
  3. Frozen Shoulder: This is a debilitating condition that restricts the free movement of the arm and is also known as adhesive capsulitis. When the shoulder tissues become too thick, it leads to the growth of scar tissue that hinders proper movement and causes pain. 
  4. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a condition that comes as part of aging bones that also become hollow and brittle over the passage of time, which leads to joint and bone pains in various parts of the body. It is a degenerative disease that is caused due to prolonged wear and tear as well as other factors including family history and sports injury.
  5. Bursitis: This condition is known to affect the fluid filled sacs that lie in between the joints. These are known as bursae. When the bursae suffers from swelling, the effect usually shows up as pain in the joints. 
  6. Tendon Sheath Inflammation: The fibrous tissue that connects the bones and the muscles is called a tendon. The presence of the tendon makes it possible to pursue activities like running, jumping, lifting, gripping and more. It is protected by a sheath known as synovium, which also lubricates the same. Any injury or tear to this sheath can cause shoulder pain.

In case when a patient suffering from shoulder pain doesn't respond to routine conservative care, then it can be treated with ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy). This is a non-invasive and non-operative  form of treatment and has no side effects with excellent outcome. Proper rehabilitation before and after any procedure is the key to success. 

Acute and persistent pain that does not abate and gets even worse should be treated with immediate medical intervention.

Back can be due to Mechanical Problem that is due to prolonged sitting position causing Postural fault. Can also be due to Kidney stone or Infection. Can also be due to Gall bladder refered pain. You can try sitting upright at work, that is maintain an erect firm posture by producing a pretty good curve at Lowback, try it if it helps. Try Back Extension Exercise for 12 repetitions every two hourly and check whether it helps. Consult a Qualified Physiotherapist for further clinical reasoning. You can Consult me for further details. Hi. Have you given adequate rest to your back? As if there is a element of spasm which is present which has to be give adequate rest and muscle relaxant both required, you cannot skip either one. Once the spasm has relieved or reduces then we start with specific back strengthening exercises and postural training exercises. This relieves the problem and has less chances to recur. This if ignored may lead to future issues which are difficult to tackle. You may consider consulting on text to specify your exact problem.

How To Get Relief From A Runner's Knee?

The problem with runner’s knee is that it leaves you partially immobile. The pain is really uncomfortable and it bars daily activities, exercises, etc. To get relief from such pain, you may try resting the knee for some time. In case you are not getting any respite with rest and precautionary steps, you may go for a more aggressive treatment. However, to understand what is going wrong with your knee, it is important that you understand the problem and its causes better.

Understanding Runner’s Knee-

It can be a combined problem with the knee cap, misalignment of any of the bones starting from the pelvic line to the knee, a damage or degeneration of the cartilage beneath the knee bone or patella, or loosening of the associated thigh muscles. Hence with any or some of the bone problems, the condition may develop. You may hear a pop sound with knee movements or may experience pain and swelling. Pain may come from any side or surround the full joint.

Prevention Is The Best Method-

To prevent runner’s knee from affecting you, when you know that you are an athlete and are more susceptible to it, try the following:

  1. Concentrate on strengthening your thigh muscles for complete support.

  2. Pick a good shoe for running and exercising.

  3. Try to avoid hard running tracks.

  4. Manage your weight.

  5. Use a knee guard when doing intense workout.

  6. While you are increasing your workout and activity, try to make the change slow and gradual.

How To Treat Runner’s Knee?

The best treatment for the condition is rest. Time and rest cure the problem on its own in most cases. Pain can be reduced with ice pack application for half an hour and can be repeated after every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days. Also, you must try to keep your legs high using a pillow support while you are lying down or sitting. Try to get support from a good orthopedic shoe. You may also need physiotherapy exercises to heal better. Additionally, some stretching exercises for strengthening your thigh muscles would be recommended by your physiotherapist.

If the pain is excruciating, you may take pain killers like ibuprofen or naproxen etc. Ensure you take these medicines only after a consent from your doctor. In some severe cases, a surgery may be needed to align the bone, or replace the affected cartilage.

Healing time-

The age and body condition decides how fast you would heal. But once you are cured, try to be careful with enough knee support through shoes, knee guards and physiotherapy so that the condition does not return. Also remember that resting between exercise reps is a must.

I am a 21 year old female. I have a metatarsal hairline fracture. I have been in a cast for 2.5 weeks. My foot swells when I walk. I am supposed to get the cast off in 2-3 days. Is the swelling normal?

1. Pendulum Stretch

Do this exercise first. Relax your shoulders. Stand and lean over slightly, allowing the affected arm to hang down. Swing the arm in a small circle — about a foot in diameter. Perform 10 revolutions in each direction, once a day. As your symptoms improve, increase the diameter of your swing, but never force it. When you're ready for more, increase the stretch by holding a light weight (three to five pounds) in the swinging arm.

2. Towel Stretch

Hold one end of a three-foot-long towel behind your back and grab the opposite end with your other hand. Hold the towel in a horizontal position. Use your good arm to pull the affected arm upward to stretch it. You can also do an advanced version of this exercise with the towel draped over your good shoulder. Hold the bottom of the towel with the affected arm and pull it toward the lower back with the unaffected arm. Do this 10 to 20 times a day.

3. Finger Walk

Face a wall three-quarters of an arm's length away. Reach out and touch the wall at waist level with the fingertips of the affected arm. With your elbow slightly bent, slowly walk your fingers up the wall, spider-like, until you've raised your arm as far as you comfortably can. Your fingers should be doing the work, not your shoulder muscles. Slowly lower the arm (with the help of the good arm, if necessary) and repeat. Perform this exercise 10 to 20 times a day.

4. Cross Body Reach

Sit or stand. Use your good arm to lift your affected arm at the elbow, and bring it up and across your body, exerting gentle pressure to stretch the shoulder. Hold the stretch for 15 to 20 seconds. Do this 10 to 20 times per day.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue (ligament) that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it gets weak, swollen, and irritated (inflamed). Then your heel or the bottom of your foot hurts when you stand or walk.

Plantar fasciitis is common in middle-aged people. It also occurs in younger people who are on their feet a lot, like athletes or soldiers. It can happen in one foot or both feet.

CAUSES:

Plantar fasciitis is caused by straining the ligament that supports your arch. Repeated strain can cause tiny tears in the ligament. These can lead to pain and swelling. This is more likely to happen if:

  • Your feet roll inward too much when you walk (excessive pronation).
  • You have high arches or flat feet.
  • You walk, stand, or run for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces.
  • You are overweight.
  • You wear shoes that don't fit well or are worn out.
  • You have tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles.

SYMPTOMS:

Most people with plantar fasciitis have pain when they take their first steps after they get out of bed or sit for a long time. You may have less stiffness and pain after you take a few steps. But your foot may hurt more as the day goes on. It may hurt the most when you climb stairs or after you stand for a long time.

If you have foot pain at night, you may have a different problem, such as arthritis, or a nerve problem such as tarsal tunnel syndrome.

DIAGNOSIS:

Your doctor will check your feet and watch you stand and walk. He or she will also ask questions about:

  • Your past health, including what illnesses or injuries you have had.
  • Your symptoms, such as where the pain is and what time of day your foot hurts most.
  • How active you are and what types of physical activity you do.
  • Your doctor may take an X-ray of your foot if he or she suspects a problem with the bones of your foot, such as a stress fracture.

How is it treated?

No single treatment works best for everyone with plantar fasciitis. But there are many things you can try to help your foot get better:

1)Give your feet a rest. Cut back on activities that make your foot hurt. Try not to walk or run on hard surfaces.

2)To reduce pain and swelling, try putting heel alternately in cold and hot water for 1 -1 minute.(10-15 minute process)

3)Do toe stretches, calf stretches and towel stretches several times a day, especially when you first get up in the morning. (For towel stretches, you pull on both ends of a rolled towel that you place under the ball of your foot.)

4)Get a new pair of shoes. Pick shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole. Or try heel cups or shoe inserts. Use them in both shoes, even if only one foot hurts.

Fracture Pain - How To Deal With It?

Breaking a bone no matter how small is painful. This pain is caused both by the actual break in the bone and the damage to surrounding muscles, ligaments, nerves and other soft tissue. There are three stages of pain caused by a fracture:

  1. Acute Pain: Pain that occurs immediately after a bone is fractured
  2. Sub-Acute Pain: Pain experienced while the one and soft tissues heal
  3. Chronic Pain: Pain experienced after the fracture has healed

Any kind of fracture can cause these types of pain. However, it is not essential for everyone who has had a fracture to experience all the three kinds of pain. Many people experience pain only when the fracture occurs but in few cases, a person may break a bone and not realize it. Each type of pain needs to be dealt with in a different way.

  1. Acute Pain: Acute pain reduces as the fracture heals. For this, the fractured bone must be reset in place and held together with a splint, brace or cast so as to immobilize it. In some cases, surgery may also be needed. Over the counter pain medication is often prescribed to help deal with this type of pain. The patient is also advised to rest the broken bone and avoid certain types of movement that could worsen the break. A broken bone takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks to heal. However, in cases of other conditions such as osteoporosis, this time period could be much longer.
  2. Sub-Acute Pain: As the injury heals, the sub-acute pain experienced reduces. Immobilizing a broken bone to help it heal causes the muscles and soft tissues around it to stiffen and weaken thus triggering this type of pain. Physical therapy can be very helpful in dealing with this type of pain. Along with strengthening the muscles and reducing stiffness, physical therapy also helps reduce inflammation and scar tissue.   3. Chronic Pain: Some people may experience pain for several months and even years after a fracture has healed. This is usually caused by nerve damage or the development of scar tissue. Underlying conditions such as arthritis could also trigger this type of pain. Management of chronic pain varies from individual to individual. Treatment usually takes the form of medication, exercises and physical therapy. It is important not to avoid this type of pain and consult a doctor to ensure that it is not being caused by any other condition.

This is cervical pain (neck pain) and that's the reason the pain radiates until the shoulder blades. If you keep ice that would help and along side you can do hot water fermentation. You shall use cervical collar which would help you to reduce the radiating pain ie. Due to the nerve compression.

Sir I am 18 year boy when I was 15 I start workout after some time I start lifting heavy after 9 or 10 month I star drinking 3 .5 kg milk daily and I was squatting at 90 kg and bench press 70 kg. I was gain very good amount muscle mass but after some time I staring having back when I was drinking milk got very pain like burn in side and in back and side pain in 2 or 3 week I got a xray a ultrasound I got 4 mm kidney stone and after that it get out by uren my side pain releif but back do not when I check Uric Acid very high after take medicine about that i Can drink milk without pain and my side pain was gone but back pain is not gone sir its 2017 and the pain start in 2014 I am suffering it for 3 years and still do not get any releif my body very lean down once I have 16 inch arm now I have 13 please help me so I can go back to gym where I belong.

Hello lybrate-user, First of all starting workout (especially weight lifting) at the age of 15 years is usually a 'no'.But since you started must had valid reasons though. At present after going through all your medical history for what you have provided, I can say this much that you should consult a gerenal physician. Secondly, since you have a past history of kidney stones, it is advisable not to go into heavy weight lifting exercises and/or those exercises that involves straining the kidney region. Atlast but not the least, since you have mentioned that you are diagnosed with high uric acid level, I would say avoiding those food item which are rich in uric acid (like tomatoes, lentils ie masoor daal, soy bean, soy products, shell fishes, small fishes, palak, bengan, muli, alcoholic beverages, organ meats like liver, beef, pork, lamb, beer, etc). Drink 6 to 7 glasses of water (1 glass=250 ml) to stay hydrated. All the best for your future, I hope this will be helpful to you. Thank you. Have a nice day!
