World Hepatitis Day - Tips To Help You Prevent Yourself!

World Hepatitis Day or WHD takes place every year on 28 July and it is designed to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and to influence real change. WHD, endorsed by the World Health Organization, unites patient organisations, governments, medical professionals, and civil society, as well as the public, to boost prevention measures for fighting viral hepatitis like vaccination.

In the simple terms, hepatitis means injury to your liver due to inflammation. There are five main types of hepatitis and the type that you are suffering from is determined by a laboratory test. All the five main types of hepatitis are caused by viruses. Out of the five, Hepatitis C and B are quite big. Globally, around 250 million people are affected by hepatitis C and 300 million people are estimated to be hepatitis B carriers.

Fact sheet on hepatitis

  1. Hepatitis A & E is caused by consuming contaminated water.
  2. Hepatitis B, C and D is transmitted through infected blood to blood contact.
  3. Hepatitis C is usually spread via direct contact with the blood of an infected person.
  4. The initial symptoms of hepatitis are the same as those of flu.
  5. Hepatitis can heal on its own causing no significant liver damage; however, if it progresses, it can cause extensive liver scarring and extensive damage of your liver.

Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, and these are hepatitis A, B and C. 

How do you safeguard yourself against infection from these three dangerous hepatitis viruses?

The most common cause of concer is that a lot of us who are infected with hepatitis, especially hepatitis B don’t know that we are. The biggest bulwark against hepatitis is periodic testing and vaccination. Vaccination is available for most hepatitis viruses including A and B, which tend to be extra virulent.

So, do take care and go for periodic testing. We are reiterating this because if you are infected with hepatitis B and are not treated you can develop serious problems of the liver, including liver cancer. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 people living with hepatitis B develop serious liver problems including liver cancer. Hepatitis B related liver cancer is a leading cause of fatality and getting tested for hepatitis can help you access life-saving treatments that can prevent serious liver damage.

Other ways to prevent hepatitis are
Hepatitis A

  1. Wash your hands with soap after using the toilet
  2. Only consume freshly-cooked food
  3. Only drink bottled or boiled water
  4. Only eat fruits that can be peeled. Don’t eat fruit that has been cut and kept
  5. Avoid eating raw vegetables
  6. Vaccinate yourself against hepatitis A if you travel a lot.

Hepatitis B

  1. Practice safe sex by using condoms
  2. Only use new syringes for injections
  3. Do not share toothbrushes, razors, or manicure instruments with others
  4. Vaccinate yourself against hepatitis B
  5. Take care while getting tattooed. Only use brand new tattoo needles. Also, ask for new needles during acupuncture treatments.

Hepatitis C

  1. Avoid sharing toothbrushes, razors, and manicure equipment
  2. Cover open wounds if you are infected
  3. Don’t share needles. Always ask for fresh needles.
  4. Use only well-sterilized equipment for acupuncture, piercing, and tattooing etc.
  5. Cut down on alcohol
  6. Do not share drug needles

What should I take in order to get nutritious diet? And how much quantity please suggest?

Nutritious diet include all the food groups like cereals, pulses, dairy products etc. Avoid junk food, oily and fried food. Like in morning breakfast you can have a medium bowl of 1 medium vegetable poha, oats idly, 2 oats cheela, 2 besan cheela, 2 multigrain breads, 2 boiled eggs ,1 bowl wheat flakes+ milk or musseli + milk etc. Then in mid morning have a glass of butter milk or sprouted salad, in lunch have 2 multigrain chapatis + veg +salad+curd then in evening have a cup of green tea + roasted chana then go foa light dinner like 1-2 bowl of vegetable soup + vegetables or 2 chapati + bowl of veg+ 1 plate salad. We know that garlic consumption has many medical benefits. But can we consume garlic in summers (of north India) too? If yes, then how much and in what form? Thanks in advance.

Dear Thanks for contacting with your health concern 1. Although garlic is best known as good anti hyperlipdemic herb but consumption of same in summer can lead to aggravation of "PITTA' dosha which can imbalance the blood and metabolism [agni] resulting in outbreak of ulcers, acidity [amlapitta],gastritis, low digestion 2. As the hot potency of garlic is responsible for bad odour so avoid consuming it in peak summer time to prevent bad breath as well as bad odour. 3. If you wish to consume the same, I usually advice my patient (s) as follow: i. To prevent bad breath consume 1 clove of garlic during bed time ii. One can opt for lashunadi vati [baidyanath] or garlic pearls [himalaya] iii. If taken in morning: one may rinse mouth with a good mouth wash or drink mint juice [but remember breath comes from blood and not from mouth, so is a temporary measure]

Hi, I eat cheese and many dairy product. Some people eat boil cheese mix tumeric powder? That is best? Or please tell what add in cheese too more benefit? And which amount of cheese better for me how many gram my age 20 weight 55.

100 grams cheese per day will be enough for you becoz you r already consuming some other dairy products. Mixing turmeric may a matter of taste or choice but cheese itself is enough.

Hello lybrate-user, you can eat all dried fruits but not eat all in one day. Eat 2 dried fruits in a day (per serving 4-5) like 4 badam and 4 kaju in a day next day eat 4 kishmish and 5 khajoor you should continue with this plan.

Aap use khane ke waqt khana dijiye dal chawal roti sabzi, aur agar beech me bhuk lage to koi fruit jaise apple, Kela, grapes, ya phir cucumber aisa dijiye. Well, chicken pox scars may substantially improve till one year and some more till one more year, but slowly. Then, for left out scars I generally advocate resurfacing lasers. Right now use regular sunscreens and give time, but please take local dermatologist opinion.

Hi I would like to strongly recommend for not using steroids and excessive proteins. You should always use natural products for weight management. I am using creatine supplement from last few days. .creatine monohydrate. Company - muscleblaze, Is it safe to take? I drink 3-4 litres of water, I workout daily for 1 hr 30 mins, high intensity workout.

I'm hitting gym 5 times in a week. And Im not taking whey protein can I take bcaa and glutamine for recovery. Will it sufficent?

Whey protein is taken post workout. It already has important amino acids like glutamine which is very helpful. It should be had within 40 minutes of your workout to prevent wear and tear of muscles. Since this window is called the protein window. BCAA are specific 3 amino acids. Whey is complete in itself.

I want to get 200gm of protein on regular basis. And I am vegetarian infact I do not want to eat any type of supplement. Will any one tell me what I have to eat any in what quantity. I am able to eat all types of milk made things, grains, some fruits (banana only), and anything could be made through grains and veggies.
