I am a heavy drinker. Now I want to get rid of this and want my health back. Symptoms are sweating more than normal, loss of appetite, dramatic weight loss, tingling and numbness in tips of fingers and toes, reddish palm and foots, some times shaky dont even drink water with one hand, felling cold in ac room. Please help.

MBBS, DPM, DNB (PSYCHIATRY)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Dear, alcohol dependence syndrome (addiction) is a serious condition which can cause harm to various organs of the body including brain and nervous system. The symptoms like tingling and numbness and shaky hands are due to peripheral neuropathy and weakness of the nervous system. Whereas loss of apetite and wt loss are due to liver and git dysfunction. Lot of time people believe addictions are just bad habits which can be left at anytime with some wiilpower. And only later they realise that its not as easy as it sounds plus it becomes alarmingly dangerous in later stages of addiction. Kindly consult a psychiatrist as soon as possible for complete evaluation and treatment. You may also have to consult a liver specialist if your suffering from jaundice or liver dysfunction. Regards, Dr. Vishal chhabra.

Substance Abuse/Dependence (technical term for addiction) is not just a habit which you can quit anytime (and usually restart again very soon) but it is a proper disease with biological underpinnings i.e. Even a single puff of cigarette or a sip of alcohol brings about changes in the brain which can lead to addiction. These substances release a chemical in the brain called Dopamine which gives us pleasure and happiness which makes us get hooked to them. However over time we require higher amount of the substance to get the same amount of high which we got initially with a very small dose. This happens because of 'neuroplasticity' and 'tolerance. These higher doses cause mental and physical harm but person continues to do it because by that time the mind and body is totally addicted to it and now not taking the substance causes pain or restlessness or lack of pleasure or any other withdrawal symptom. But people continue to think its just a habit and i can kick it myself till the very late stage when it becomes unbearable or very dangerous for the health!

In last one decade we are seeing a huge increase in Substance abuse in this country specially among youngsters. The use of cannabis, alcohol and tobacco has become rampant in all college campuses causing rise in various substance abuse and psychological problems. Research shows the risk of addiction increases if person starts at young age. Younger the age of starting, higher the chance of addiction. As the social taboo decreases on use of Cannabis (mostly due to legalisation in Westren countries), Alcohol and Tobacco (both due to their depiction in media and rising corporate culture of work hard party hard) there is endemic spreading in our country of these drugs which harm both mental and physical health. In my next post i would talk of why addiction is a biological disease not just a bad habit

The goal of treatment of Bipolar disorder is not just quick relief from the current mood episode but to be able to prevent future mood eposides. Hence treatment doesn’t end after the remission of current mood episode but it is very important to continue the treatment for a long period of time (depending upon case to case...but at least one year) to prevent or at least reduce the risk of developing future mood eposides. This long term treatment is called maintenance phase. It is important to visit ur psychiatrist regularly as medications need to be adjusted/changed according to the phase of treatment a Bipolar pt is in. It is a delicate balancing act.

Please advise how could I get rid of this sleeping disorder

MBBS, DPM, DNB (PSYCHIATRY)
