Myself kiran I am 22 years old. I works on ship during my tenure the food timings was not correct due to hectic port schedule. From there I faced a stomach pain and shortness in breathing. After having antacids stomach pain relieved and shortness of breath still exist. After I get down from ship this shortness of breathe normally occurs today morning after the breakfast I am facing the problem in shortness of breathing. And I got cold and cough when a doctor suggested to inspect urine and blood all went very normal. Now what should I do and how can I cure this?

There can be many reasons for shortness of breath ranging from heart related issues, to simply anemia to Bronchial Asthma, without proper tests and evaluation it will be difficult to comment what are the issues that are causing this. Consult a local internal medicine specialist with a chest x-ray, ecg, echo, hemoglobin levels, TSh and Pulmonary Function test. And follow their advice.

Alcohol and Heart Disease - All that you need to know!

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, DM - Cardiology, Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS - Physician )

Alcohol and Heart Disease - All that you need to know!

Harmful Effects of Alcohol on Heart--

  1. Excessive alcohol intake leads to increase in cholesterol and BP which are risk factors for heart attack or blockages.
  2. Excessive alcohol intake leads to alcohol induced cardio-myopathy or weakening of heart muscle.
  3. Excessive alcohol intake is also a risk factor for developing irregular heart rate called Atrial Fibrillation

Recommended daily alcohol intake value -

Men - Upto 2 glasses/day

Women - 1 glass/day (studies have shown that even small amount of alcohol intake in women is very harmful) A drink is one 12 oz. beer, 4 oz. of wine, 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits, or 1 oz. of 100-proof spirits. Binge drinking should be ABSOLUTELY avoided.

Red wine - There is no clear cut data to prove that red wine has some cardioprotective properties. A few small studies have suggested so, but as of now there is no clear cut answer.

Alcohol and Aspirin - If you are on aspirin and take alcohol then you have higher chances of developing gastric ulcers and erosions. Hence you should try to reduce drinking if you do. If you do not drink then there is no need for you to start drinking as drinking alcohol does not provide any major benefit.

Please consult a cardiologist locally to rule out any heart related reason for this numbness in hand and chest pain, you may be asked to undergo the following tests like ecg, echo, TMT, lipid profile tec. Also another reason for this could be cervical neuropathy for which you should consult an orthopedician.

I wanted to know if sinus bradycardia is life threatening? Also what are the precautions to be followed in day to day life for this to be in control.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, DM - Cardiology, Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS - Physician )
Cardiologist, Delhi
Sinus bradycardia means that the heart is less than 60 bpm. Whether it can cause any harm or not depends on how low the heart rate is and if it is due to some disease process and is causing any symptoms. It should first be thoroughly investigated so that we can find a cause for it. An echo, 24 hr holter should be done and you should consult a cardiologist. In some people and especially atheletes who exercise a lot normal resting heart rate is low and it does not cause any harm and nothing much needs to be done, but that can be decided only after evaluation, so please consult a cardiologist.

Ceruvin A is required for a duration of 6 months-12 years post angioplasty, depending upon the type of stents and the disease you had your treating cardiologist may advice you to continue it for longer duration. Eventually youu will need to continue with atleast one anti-platelet and lipid lowering drug. A healthy diet, daily walking for 40 mins and good BP and sugar control are also essential. And you should follow up with your treating cardiologist atleast 6 monthly for medication review and symptom evaluation.

My son is 20 years old & he is smoking-cigrate + ganja from last more than one year. How to get rid of this bad habit? He is in a hypertension lot of time after taking ganja he feels normal. Is any medicine is available to control & get rid off permanently? Please advice.

Please consult a good psychiatrist for a de-addiction regime for your son so that he can quit smoking. As far as hypertension is concerned, I hope his BP has been measured and that is why he has been labelled hypertensive and that his anxiety has not been mis-interpreted by family as hypertension, kindly get him evaluated for the same. At times stress is the cause of hypertension and smoking leads to a feeling of well being by reducing that stress, there are medical options available to reduce stress and your son can be counselled about the same by doctors.

Hi, I am on 10 mg of propranolol twice a day and my blood pressure is 90/60 is that dangerous?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, DM - Cardiology, Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS - Physician )
Cardiologist, Delhi
Your BP is on the lower side, if you are experiencing any symptoms like weakness, giddiness etc then you should consult your treating doctor for stopping this medication and giving you some alternative medication. If you are not experiencing any side-effects, still inform your treating doctor so that they are aware of this and take lot of oral fluids like water, coconut water, lemon juice, lassi etc

Hi, My son is suffering from high blood pressure for last two three months and the echo cardiogram report is saying mild concentric LVH. Doctor prescribed Prolomet XL 50 mg. His bp is 150/100. After taking the medicine I observed his hear beat is bit low. I want to know what should be the lower limit of heart beat, so that if required, I can consult my cardiologist. Thanks.

1) Please understand that BP when it has been high for a while, causes heart muscle to thicken, your son's echo report shows that when it says mild LVH. This does not mean that you need to panic, it simply indicates that his BP requires proper management so that it can be controlled and brought in acceptable range. 2) 150/100 is still very high and in my opinion there are better antihypertensives like ARB'S, ACE inhibitors, Calcium channel blockers etc that are available and should be used in his case rather than Prolomet which is a beta blocker. So please consult your cardiologist for change of medication. 3) Prolomet which is a beta-blocker, causes slowing of heart rate. Normal heart rate should be between 60-100 bpm, if a patient is on beta-blockers it can be as low as 50bpm. If heart rate is any lower than this you should contact your treating cardiologist 4) Alongwith medication a change in lifestyle and food habits is absolutely must for BP control. So please ensure that he does not smoke or drink. He should exercise daily for 40 mins and eat a diet low in salty food and high in fruits, vegetables, proteins etc.

My dad is age 53 years suffered from high bp and taking telma 40 after few days feeling so weak due to such tablet. How much time it will take to recover from weakness?

Weakness due to Telma can be only if it is reducing BP too much leading to hypotension, otherwise it is very unlikely that Telma is a cause of weakness. In any case It will be best that you consult your treating cardiologist for BP check, as well as get a ecg, echo and Renal function test, TSH and hemoglobin checked. And ask your treating cardiologist for advise regarding medication change or dose reducation according to these reports.

Your doctor is correct in saying that his BP is very high for his age and it requires thorough evaluation to find out if any treatable cause is leading to this problem, please consult a good cardiologist for a proper and detailed evaluation of the cause of such high BP. He will require tests like echo, check of BP in both arms and both legs, Ultrasound whole abdomen, 24 hr VMA levels and serum cortisol levels etc.
