So I can either be a mania episode or a depressive episode. Agr is prevalence ki baat kren to lag bag 2 se 5 % is ka prevalence hai so at any point of time 2 to 5 % of the population will be suffering from this condition called Bipolar Mood Disorder. It is called a mood disorder because is se mood me esy disorder aty hain k ya to aadmi high feel krta h ya low feel krta h. jb aadmi high feel kry gag a jis ko hum mania bol skty hain to mania k symptoms hoty hain k self-esteem bar jaye ga, confidence bar jaye ga, energy levels bar jaen gay, decrease need for sleep ho jati hai. Esa lgta h k kisi ko soye bina b energy levels on k pury rhty hain. Sexual drive qai baar bhar jati h, demanding behavior bar skta hai, then qai baar khany k liye boht saty on ko interesting cheezien lgti hain k ye khareedna hai, ye khana hai is tareeqy se aa skta hai. Apart from that jb ye zyada ho jata hai phir ye disruptive b ho skta hai. Qai log boht zyada khush b ho jaty hain qai log irritable b ho jaty hain. To ye ek manic phase tha. Ek aur condition hoti h jisy hum Hypomania bolty hain. Hypomania me kiya hota hai k zyada tar disruption ni hoga aur aadmi essa lgy ga boht smart ho gya h, savvy ho gya h evergetic ho gya h, apny kaam ko zyada efficiently kry ga, but koi social ya intellectual disruption ni hogi os me, ek is ka dusra phase hota h jisy hum depression kehty hain. Depression jaisy aap janty hain energy level kam ho jaye ga, kuc krna ka man ni kry ga, confidence kam ho jaye ga, hopelessness aa skti hai, boht zyada depression ho jaye to suicide k bary me log sochny lg jaty hain, os ko esa lgny lg jata h k zindagi jeeny laiq nhi hai, kuch krny laiq nhi hai, ye dusra phase hai jis k bary me batt kr rha tha, depression hai, ye dono phases ye patient me jisy bipolar hota hai dono ho skty hain, zyada tar hum manty hain k jo depression ka phase h wo 3 maheeny se ly kr ek saal rhta h aur mania ka phase hai wo 3 maheeny se 6 maheeny tk rhta hai. I donopahses ki beech me ek boht bra antr b ho skta hai ek chota antr b ho skta hai, jisko hum normal phase bolty hain. Is ko, is ko basically mood disorder kaha gya hain to mood changes aa rhy hain aur q k psychiatric condition hai isly psychiatrist deal krty hain. To ultimately, agr aap log ya aap k family me koi is se garrhast hai to aap ek psychiatrist se mil skty hai. Agr aap mery se milna chahty to lybrate k through contact kr skty hain.

Time and again mery paas esy patients aty hain jo internet ya gaming addiction k bemari se effected hain. Is ko hum internet addiction ya gaming addiction bhi bolty hain.

Kuch criteria hain - jb wo meet hony lg jaty hain , tb hum keh skty hain k ye addiction h. To kuch esy criteria ho skty hain k aap bht zyada Samay internet k bitaty ho. Generally kuch time bd esy hony lg jata h k log jb pochty hain k aap itna samay internet p bitay ho , to log is k bary me jhoot bolny lg jaty hain k hum inta Samay ni, agr wo 6 ghanty bitaty hain to wo 1 ghanta boleygy, 3 ghanty boleygy.

Phr jo real life contact hain, wo real life contacts chor k wo log internet p profiles bna lety hain. Internet p friends lety hain aur jo human contact h wo km ho jata h. Agar internet se door rkha jaye in logon ko to on me depression k anxiety k, headache k, irritation k ye sary symptoms aa skty hain.

Underlying Factors That May Trigger Aggression

Underlying Factors That May Trigger Aggression

Aggression or aggressive behavior can often lead to violence and destruction which can be really harmful to their loved ones. When dealing with an aggressive person, it is important to understand that aggression is not always an after effect of some provocations and can often be spontaneous. Excessive and frequent aggression can wreak havoc, affecting the person and their loved ones physically, mentally as well as emotionally. Reports suggest that cases of aggression among youngsters are rising at an alarming rate. It has also been noted that the boys exhibit more aggression than girls. Thus, proper action needs to be taken at the earliest to avoid serious consequences.

Symptoms:
The following symptoms and behavioral changes may be observed in people with aggressive nature.

  1. The person may have mood swings and remain irritated all the time. Depression may be commonly seen in such people.
  2. The person isolates himself or herself from the outside world.
  3. Insomnia and eating disorders are common.
  4. An unstable mental health.
  5. The person may exhibit signs of self-destruction.They may also cause harm to the others, including their loved ones.
  6. There may be hallucinations, delusions, confusion and poor communication skills.
  7. There may alterations in his or her personality.
  8. Lack of concentration. A person may find it difficult to read or write.
  9. Lethargy is also common in people with aggressive behavior.

Underlying factors that may trigger aggression
A person may appear aggressive physically, mentally, verbally or even emotionally. The aggressive behavior can be an outcome of a myriad of factors such as:

  1. A negative environment during the growing period: How a child is brought up can play a significant role in shaping their character. A person who had seen a lot of fights, arguments or aggression in their childhood often grows up to be aggressive.
  2. Genetics: People who have a family history of aggression and aggressive behavior (immediate family) are more likely to be aggressive.
  3. An unstable mental health with conditions such as schizophrenia, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder or Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can also cause aggression. Aggression can also be triggered by traumatic brain injury, stress, meningitis, stroke or substance abuse (as well as withdrawal symptoms).

Managing Aggressive Behavior
A person needs to have a lot of patience while dealing with aggressive people. Such people need your support, love, care, and affection.

  1. For an effective management, try and find out the triggers of aggression and then work towards improving the situation.
  2. Meditation can have a great soothing effect and can play an important role to calm down the person. Music may be equally helpful.
  3. Sound sleep and proper rest can work miracles in reducing the associated symptoms and complications.
  4. Maintain a positive environment around the affected person. Keep the person happy, cheerful and stress-free.
  5. Don't let the person live in isolation. Try and make them interact with people. Don't give them the impression that they are not normal. Don't over sympathize with them. They need your support more than the sympathy.
  6. Don't shy away from medical help. Love and care with proper medications can work wonders.

Don't Like Studying Maths - Is Your Child Suffering From Dyscalculia?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Don't Like Studying Maths - Is Your Child Suffering From Dyscalculia?

At a young age, it is fairly common to be afraid of math. The rational nature of numbers, multiplication tables, addition, subtraction and all that in between can admittedly be a tough thing to get on with at a tender age. But in most of the cases, this difficulty tends to improve as one attains maturity. This can be attributed to a growing familiarity with the subject and a subsequent change in the way of understanding certain things. But if your child suffers from a problem with understanding math even at a grown age, chances are he/she might be suffering from Dyscalculia- a special type of learning disorder that is characterized by a person’s inability to grasp the concepts of math or the very concept of numbers itself.

Dyscalculia generally occurs due to genetic factors. However, it is also possible to encounter this disorder if your child had suffered from significant brain injury in the past or have problems with remembering things. It is also possible to have this disorder, if your child is already suffering from Dyslexia ( a learning disorder which makes your child unable to read or understand written words).

The symptoms of Dyscalculia are as follows:

  1. Inability to recognize numbers and significant trouble while counting.
  2. Significant problems while performing basic additions, subtractions or divisions.
  3. Facing problems with how to use money or telling time.
  4. The problem with memorizing mathematical formulae or tables.
  5. Your child might be unable to discern exactly how to approach a math problem.
  6. Your child will be increasingly reluctant to go to a math class or feel tensed before math examinations.
  7. Inability to understand the basic functionality of numbers.

It is extremely important to remember that having this disorder does not necessarily mean your child has a bad academic record on the whole. Since this disorder can cause significant problems in the future for your child in terms of dealing with things in the real world, you should be extremely sensitive regarding its treatment.

The treatment of Dyscalculia might include:

  1. You should encourage your child more and more if they tend to get immensely frustrated with their math problems. If possible, try to help your child with his/ her homework.
  2. Strike a healthy relationship with your child. Make him realize that not being able to grasp the concept of numbers is not the end of the world. Explore his other skills. That might boost his lost confidence and might encourage him to approach math in a more efficient manner.
  3. You should try to make your child learn how to tell time or use money with little home exercises. If possible, try to make him learn the basic of math with daily activities like counting the number of flowers while walking down the streets.
  4. You must consult a specialist who will make your child learn numbers by following different modes other than writing. For example, the specialist might read a math problem to your child in order to make him understand the problem.

3 Ways In Which Food And Depression Are Connected!

3 Ways In Which Food And Depression Are Connected!

Depression is a clinical, mental, and emotional condition that may give rise to feelings of hopelessness and chronic sadness. It slows down the way people process everyday activities and leads the patient to a sense of constant gloom and doom. It is a disabling mental condition as per WHO, and may be caused due to reasons like genetics, changes in the balance of hormones, stress, grief, trauma and prolonged, chronic physical ailments. Depression is also connected with food and nutrition. Do you want to know how?

Read on to see the three ways in which food and depression are connected.

  1. Severity and Duration: Depression is a mental illness that signifies an imbalance in the hormones and the emotional faculties in the brain. Nutrition is the fuel that keeps the brain and body in prime working condition. When a depressive state sets in or becomes emotionally rooted, then nutritious eating and a proper diet take a back seat as the patient succumbs to a state where he or she is not concerned about the food intake. As a result, the brain and hormonal balance get further affected. This can have an adverse effect on the severity and the duration of the depressive mode, which makes it all a vicious cycle of sorts. Poor appetite, not having proper meals, skipping meals, eating junk, avoiding social settings where food will be served, and even emotional eating are all outcomes of depression too.
  2. Eating Disorders: Many patients who have eating disorders often experience deep rooted and chronic depression. Since despondency and hopelessness are the main characteristics of depressive behaviour, the outcome is that the patient tries to behave in a way that seeks approval. And in all this, the patient usually thinks that he or she is not 'good enough'. In such a scenario, the patient may start trying out fad diets and eventually fall prey to eating disorders like Bulimia that make the patient overeat and then vomit. These eating disorders usually come with phases of binge eating, throwing up, starving and then repeating the cycle again. Eating in secrecy is also a symptom of this condition.
  3. Nutrition to Fight Depression: Nutrition and proper food intake can build a sense of resilience by first of all improving the overall physical condition of the patient. This can take care of a lot of angst even as the minerals and vitamins travel to the brain for better functioning in the long run.

Ensure that you eat right as a part of your therapy for depression. This is as good as taking your medication on time! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Possible Reasons For Having Issues In Bed!

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Possible Reasons For Having Issues In Bed!

There are various reasons that might cause issues in bed, most of which are psychological. Anxiety and self-doubts majorly affect your mind and as a result, you might face problems in your sex life. Reproduction has little to do with a great and pleasurable sex life. Lack of intimacy or lack of sex may cause the couple in question to drift apart. Conflicts may arise and they might face other relationship problems. This makes sex an important aspect, as identifying the issues you have in bed might not only solve your sex-related problems, but it also makes life better in various other ways.

Possible reasons for having issues in bed

  1. Laziness: This is a major concern. Lack of enthusiasm and laziness can be reasons why you face issues in bed. Taking initiative is the main point when it comes to sex. If you notice that your partner is no longer taking initiative, this is the point where you indulge in self-doubts and this leads to sexual performance anxiety.
  2. Lack of emotional connection: The emotional connection between you and your partner plays a vital role. Emotional and physical compatibility are directly proportional. A couple who is not emotionally compatible cannot have the expected level of physical intimacy. Communication, some alone time, romantic dates or simply watching a movie together might strengthen the level of emotional connection, thereby solving issues in bed.
  3. Lack of self-confidence: Body image is a major factor that influences self-confidence when it comes to sex. Body changes are inevitable and you might not be in the same weight throughout. Your level of fitness keeps on varying and this should really not be a problem when it comes to sex. Complementing each other is important. If that does not work out, you can opt for couple exercises and get fit or maintain your optimum weight together with your partner.
  4. Parenting: In the case of women who are parenting, they are preoccupied with various other work and they might not be very much involved in sex as they used to be. This might cause issues between the partners. Again, this is when you communicate how you feel about it. Working things out is simple, but communicating the issue is the real solution.
  5. Frequency problems: There might be a problem when one person in a relationship feels that the other does not want to have sex as frequently as he or she wants it. The number of times you want to have sex and the time when you want to have sex may differ. These differences should be worked out. Catering to the needs and desires of one and another is important for the success of the relationship, both physically and emotionally.

If you are too lost into this and communicating the problems with your partner and setting things right is not quite possible, a psychiatrist can help you get back on track.

Psychiatry - Common Myths Around It!

Psychiatry - Common Myths Around It!

The mental health of a person can be regulated with the help of self awareness and a conscious attitude in many cases. Yet, in most cases, one will have to resort to the use of psychiatric help which may include the use of therapy and medication.

There are many conditions that may go out of hand and affect our day to day functioning. These include conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and many more. Yet, there is a certain amount of stigma and many myths attached to the field of psychiatry and its medication. Here are a few myths that we have tried decoding.

Psychiatric medicines can be addictive: This is a major myth that many people have. It is not true that once you start taking psychiatric medication, you will have to take them for life. In fact, for medicines like anti depressants, most clinicians make it a rule to administer the drugs for only one and a half times for which the same may be required, so that the person does not get dependent on the medication in order to run his or her life in a normal manner. Further, the prescription of such medication is more often than not, backed with proper therapy which happens before and after the medication is taken. This helps in ensuring that the patient is weaned off accordingly with the help of positive discussions and evaluations.

Antidepressants can make us happy: This is another major myth that many people have. The fact is that the antidepressants do not have any euphoria creating properties which recreations drugs may have. These are medicines that have an affect on the production of the specific hormones that may be creating problems in the life of the patient. Therefore, one should not expect to feel happy as soon as the antidepressant is taken with some water. A happier self can only come from within and with outside help like therapy in case the patient is in a constant state of despair. The medication will simply help in suppressing and increasing the production of the necessary hormones in the brain, which will restore the correct chemical balance. A person who takes these kinds of medicines without actually suffering from depression may face side effects like feeling off balance and sick.

Psychiatric medicines have too many side effects: This is another myth that makes people fearful when it comes to taking such medicines. There are side effects in most kinds of medicines, and these are no different. The extent of the side effects for medicines like beta blockers and antidepressants may include an upset stomach and a slight headache, which may make the patient drowsy. Fatigue and a decrease in one’s sexual appetite may also follow as a side effect. Yet, most patients get over these side effects once their body adapts to the medication. These side effects do not hamper one’s life majorly. In fact, there is a constant influx of new medication that makes the side effects, even more mild. Consult an Expert & get answers to your questions!

Myths Related To Psychiatry And Psychiatric Medicines

The mental health of a person can be regulated with the help of self-awareness and a conscious attitude in many cases. Yet, in most cases, one will have to resort to the use of psychiatric help which may include the use of therapy and medication. There are many kinds of conditions that may go out of hand and affect our day to day functioning. These include conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and many more. Yet, there is a certain amount of stigma and many myths attached to the field of psychiatry and its medication. Here are a few myths that we have tackled.

  1. Psychiatric Medicines can be Addictive: This is a major myth that may people have. It is not true that once you start taking psychiatric medication, you will have to take them for life. In fact, for medicines like anti depressants, most clinicians make it a rule to administer the drugs for only a limited period of time, so that the person does not get dependent on the medication in order to run his or her life in a normal manner. Like there is a time defined period for treatment like ATT ( for tuberculosis) likewise there is a time duration of treatment with antidepressants which a patient should discuss with their psychiatrist. Further, the prescription of such medication is more often than not, backed with proper therapy which happens before and after the medication is taken. This helps in ensuring that the patient is weaned off accordingly with the help of positive discussions and evaluations.
  3. Psyhiatric drugs will change your personality: Any medication out there can cause negative effects for a patient if taken too long or given the wrong dosage. You have to discuss any treatment related side effects with your doctor and he will have a solution for it. The way we see it, is this; if someone with depression overcomes it through their medication, their personality will be changed, yes – they will be free from negative thoughts, anti-social behavior, and feelings of defeat, which is a definite change in personality – a positive change. The same can be said for an illness like Schizophrenia, with the right treatment plan, their minds will become less consumed by hallucinations, delusions, and irrational anxieties – another healthy and positive personality change. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Social Anxiety Disorder - How It Can Be Treated?

Social Anxiety Disorder - How It Can Be Treated?

While many of us may feel the pressure of appearing in large social gatherings, there are those who feel positively crippled at the very thought of showing up and interacting with many people at a time. There is a difference between the two scenarios where one may down to an introverted nature, and the other may be a symptom of a greater problem like social anxiety disorder. So what exactly is this condition all about? Here is everything you need to know!

Definition: By definition, social anxiety disorder is marked with many issues including the feeling of pressing self-consciousness, as well as anxiety, fear and embarrassment. All of these may be caused in the natural course of everyday interactions as well. It is a condition where the patient cannot cope with normal interactions without the support of medication and therapy.

Symptoms: There are a number of symptoms which can help in recognizing this condition. Constant worry and concern that one may end up humiliated on a public platform or while having the most mundane discussions at work or at a party, is one of the most pressing symptoms of this condition. Further, the patient will also be fearful of offending people he or she may be interacting with. Also, after an interaction or presence at a gathering, one may sit down to analyze the performance in great detail and be constantly critical of the same. Anxiety may also make the patient avoid any kind of social situation in extreme cases.

Causes: There are a number of things that may cause such a condition. The genetic makeup of the patient may make this an inherited condition that may happen if there were one or more people in the direct family who were suffering from this condition. Also, it may be caused due to changes in the amygdala, which is the part of the brain that controls one’s responses to fear. A person with an overactive amygdala may end up feeling more scared than normal of the most everyday things. Social anxiety disorder can also be a learned behaviour which may come up due to environmental issues like being reared by parents who have been severely overprotective of their children.

Treatment: There are many ways of treating this condition. To begin with, one can turn to psychotherapy. With the help of such therapy, the symptoms can be handled with the help of proper discussions and the programming of new ideas into the brain so that the fear and anxiety gradually recede. Cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most favoured forms of therapy that psychiatrists consider in such cases. Medication like norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors may also be prescribed for the patient so as to control the amygdala. Further, one may also have to sue antidepressants prescribed by a medical practitioner so as to deal with the anxiety and fear on an everyday basis. Also, one may use beta blockers that affect the way adrenaline functions, by curbing the excess production of the same. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.
