Tips for children's dental health

Once teeth begin to appear in the mouths of children, care must also begin. Bearing in mind we offer some tips for dental health of children .

For those who just have the first tooth , it is recommended to be cleaned with a cotton or cloth. As their number increases to use a soft toothbrush and special toothpaste for children , because adult products may cause stains on the teeth of children by their high content of fluorine, in part because they have not learned to spit properly, keeping your mouth product quantities greater than those needed for dental cleaning .

As to the first visit to the dentist, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry used to be told it was about 3 years, however, given that many children already have tooth decay when they start their school years, the council has changed to make this visit six months after the onset of the first tooth and no later than twelve months.

Some children may be more likely to suffer tooth decay , for example those who tend to sleep with objects in their mouths or who remain most of the day using a cup or other receptacle for fluids. In these cases, preventive visits to the dentist will take place every 6 months. In lower-risk cases, the doctor will be responsible for recommending the frequency.

Another risk factor that should be taken into account is the inheritance. If the relatives of the child or the child has had recurrent bouts with dental diseases, is advised to visit the specialist every 6 months so that, if they occur, detect such problems early.

The most important thing is to pay attention to the way teeth come and make appropriate follow-up, better yet if this is done by a dentist specializing in pediatric dentistry.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. It is a mineral that is naturally present in varying amounts in almost all foods and water supplies. The benefits of fluoride have been well known for over 50 years and are supported by many health and professional organizations.

Fluoride works in two ways

Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to decay. We gain topical fluoride by using fluoride containing dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Dentists and dental hygienists generally recommend that children have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.

Systemic fluoride strengthens the teeth that have erupted as well as those that are developing under the gums. We gain systemic fluoride from most foods and our community water supplies. It is also available as a supplement in drop or gel form and can be prescribed by your dentist or physician. Generally, fluoride drops are recommended for infants, and tablets are best suited for children up through the teen years. It is very important to monitor the amounts of fluoride a child ingests. If too much fluoride is consumed while the teeth are developing, a condition called fluorosis (white spots on the teeth) may result.

Although most people receive fluoride from food and water, sometimes it is not enough to help prevent decay. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend the use of home and/or professional fluoride treatments for the following reasons:

  • Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth.
  • Exposed and sensitive root surfaces.
  • Fair to poor oral hygiene habits.
  • Frequent sugar and carbohydrate intake.
  • Inadequate exposure to fluorides.
  • Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions, medical treatments or medications.
  • Recent history of dental decay.

Remember, fluoride alone will not prevent tooth decay! It is important to brush at least twice a day, floss regularly, eat balanced meals, reduce sugary snacks, and visit your dentist on a regular basis.

A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these conditions are hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface.

Sealants can protect teeth from decay for many years, but need to be checked for wear and chipping at regular dental visits.

Reasons for sealants

Children and teenagers As soon as the six-year molars (the first permanent back teeth) appear or any time throughout the cavity prone years of 6-16.

Adults Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep grooves or depressions.

Baby teeth Occasionally done if teeth have deep grooves or depressions and child is cavity prone.

What do sealants involve?

Sealants are easily applied by your dentist or dental hygienist and the process takes only a couple of minutes per tooth.

The teeth to be sealed are thoroughly cleaned and then surrounded with cotton to keep the area dry. A special solution is applied to the enamel surface to help the sealant bond to the teeth. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. Sealant material is carefully painted onto the enamel surface to cover the deep grooves or depressions. Depending on the type of sealant used, the material will either harden automatically or with a special curing light.

Proper home care, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new sealants.

Ringworm, Athletes Foot And Jock Itch

General Surgeon, Mumbai
Ringworm, Athletes Foot And Jock Itch

Some people call these fungal infections" ringworm" because they often cause a ring-shaped, red, itchy rash on the skin. But a ring-shaped rash is not always there. People with athlete's foot might instead have moist, raw skin between their toes, or flaking skin on the bottoms of their feet. People with jock itch often just have a red rash on the groin.

Sometimes, especially in children, the fungus can infect the scalp. On the scalp, the infection can look like a bald spot or a round flaky patch of skin.

How did I get a fungal infection? — you can catch fungal infections from anyone who is infected. You can also catch them from an infected dog or cat. Plus, you can pick up the infections from places where the fungus might be, such as:

●a shower stall

●the locker room floor

●the area near a pool

If you have a fungal infection on one part of your body, you can also spread it to other parts. For instance, men with a fungal infection on their feet sometimes spread it to their groin.

How are fungal infections treated? — the treatment for a fungal infection depends on which body part is affected. If you have a fungal infection on your scalp, you must take pills that will kill the fungus. Treatment for scalp infections usually lasts 1 to 3 months.

If you have a fungal infection on your feet, groin, or another body part, you probably will not need pills. Instead, you can use a special gel, cream, lotion, or powder that kills fungus. Treatment with these products lasts 2 to 4 weeks.

If you have a fungal infection on your groin and on your feet, you must treat both infections at the same time. If you do not, the infection on your feet can spread to your groin again.

How do I keep from getting a fungal infection again? — if someone in your home has had a fungal infection on their scalp:

●get rid of any combs, brushes, barrettes, or other hair products that could have the fungus on them

●make sure a doctor or nurse checks everyone in the house for a fungal infection

●if the fungal infection might have come from a pet, have it checked by a vet

Here are some other general tips on how to prevent fungal infections:

●do not share unwashed clothes, sports gear, or towels with other people

●always wear slippers or sandals when at the gym, pool, or other public areas. That includes public showers.

●wash with soap and shampoo after sports or exercise

●change your socks and underwear at least once a day

●keep your skin clean and dry. Always dry yourself well after swimming or showering.

What are ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch? — they are skin infections caused by a fungus. These types of fungal infections are also called" tinea"

Genus Epidemicus For NIPAH Virus

Homeopath, Noida
Genus Epidemicus For NIPAH Virus

Study report submitted by the expert committee appointed by ihma kerala to identify a probable homoeopathic genus epidemicus for the current viral epidemic – 2018 - in kerala. (the report was forwarded to dmo, department of homoeopathy, kozhikode.)

In the last few years, pre monsoon viral fevers took the life of a considerable number of patients in our state and in spite of adequate preventive measures from the part of the government health authorities, newly emerging epidemics lead to a threatening situation each year. Homoeopathy always played its part in such circumstances and the role of both government and private doctors in those situations was really commendable.
As homoeopathic system has a unique method of finding out the preventive medicine by selection of genus epidemicus (ge) on the basis of collective symptomatology (including pathology) of the patients, there is always a hope even in newly emerging epidemics. This is an attempt to find out a ge for the current viral epidemic encephalitis.
Identification of ge, step 1 – collection of symptoms from patients.
As direct interaction with the patient was not allowed, information about the patient’s symptoms were obtained from patients care givers, treating physician and literature on nipah epidemic in past.

Symptoms collected from patients:
1. High fever

2. Violent headache.

3. Fear of death. (due to knowledge about the mortality of the disease?)

4. Body pain. (muscle pain?)

5. Vomiting. (h/o gastritis?)

6. Weakness.

7. Scanty urine

8. Confusion, disorientation.

9. Delirium, fever during

10. Heat, alternating with chill
11. Convulsions

12. Coma.

1. Fever, zymotic fevers

2. Fever, heat, intense heat.

3. Headache, violent, fever during.

4. Mind, coma, fever during

5. Mind, delirium, fever during

6. Fever, heat, alternating with chill

7. Urine, scanty, fever during.

8. Convulsions, fever during

9. Weakness, fever during

Special advises:
Any person who is taking the medicine should stop the medication if any adverse symptoms appear.

Since the current infection has almost 100 percent case fatality rate and as there is no available treatment except supportive care, we propose this homoeopathic ge for administration to contain the epidemic. Ge is a time tested homoeopathic method of prevention of epidemic and has yielded positive outcome in many previous epidemics.

Hair Loss In Men And Women

General Surgeon, Mumbai
Hair Loss In Men And Women

Androgenetic alopecia can look different in men and women. Men often develop bald areas on the front and the top of the scalp. Women often have thinning hair on the top of the scalp, but usually do not lose all of the hair there (figure 1).

Another common cause of hair loss is called" alopecia areata" this type of hair loss happens when the body's infection-fighting system gets confused and starts to attack the parts of the skin where hair grows. People with alopecia areata have big, usually round spots of hair missing (picture 1).

There are many other reasons for hair loss. Some medical conditions and even some medicines can also cause hair loss.

Should I see a doctor or nurse? — see your doctor or nurse if you are very bothered by your hair loss, or if:

●you are not sure why you are losing your hair

●your hair loss occurs suddenly

●you also have itching or pain on your scalp

●you also don't feel well or feel very tired

Are there tests I should have? — most people with hair loss do not need tests. But your doctor or nurse might do tests to make sure your hair loss is not caused by a hormonal problem or another medical condition.

How is hair loss treated? — that depends on what type of hair loss you have.

If your hair loss is caused by a health problem, treating that problem can help. Other types of hair loss are treated with medicines that go on the scalp or that come in pills. Sometimes surgery is used to treat people with areas of hair that cannot grow back.

●androgenetic alopecia – these medicines can help hair regrow in people with androgenetic alopecia:

•minoxidil – this medicine is used in men and women. You can buy it without a prescription. It comes in a liquid or foam that you put on your head.

•finasteride – this medicine is meant for men. Doctors sometimes also give it to women who have been through menopause (meaning they have stopped having periods). It comes in a pill, and you need a prescription to buy it.

•spironolactone– this medicine can help hair regrow in some women who do not have good results with minoxidil. It is not safe to use during pregnancy. Women who can get pregnant are often given birth control pills to prevent pregnancy while they are taking spironolactone. The medicine comes in a pill, and you need a prescription to buy it.

●alopecia areata – these are some examples of medicines that can help regrow hair in people with alopecia areata:

•medicines called steroids – these can be given as shots, or applied directly to the skin (for example, as a liquid, gel, foam, lotion, or cream). The medicine slows or stops the immune response that causes alopecia areata. These are not the same as the steroids some athletes take illegally.

•a treatment called" topical immunotherapy" – a dermatologist usually gives this type of treatment. The doctor puts a special medicine that causes a mild allergic reaction on the spots of hair loss. You usually need many treatments to see if topical immunotherapy will work.

What if I am upset about my hair loss? — losing your hair can be very tough. If you feel sad or anxious because of your hair loss, speak to your doctor or nurse. He or she can help you get the support you need.

What causes hair loss? — the most common cause of hair loss is a condition called" androgenetic alopecia" this condition is also known as" male-pattern baldness" when it happens in men and" female-pattern hair loss" when it happens in women.
