A food science expert, Dr. Lee Berk led a study at Loma Linda University in California stated that after years of research on the influence of dark chocolate on neurological functions, he can firmly conclude from the perspective of the amount of sugar content in these chocolates, the greater the sugar intake, the happier people seem to be. This is because sugar provides energy and keeps mood fresh. He had studied at the impact of large amounts of cacao in small doses, similar to a chocolate bar of regular size in human beings over a significant duration of time.
What did the study reveal?
The study revealed some fascinating benefits of cacao, one of the ingredients in dark chocolates. It showed that higher the concentration of cacao, they tend to have a positive effect on cognition, memory, immunity, mood along with other benefits. Cacao contains antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, which are also anti-inflammatory agents, and they are extremely beneficial for keeping brain and heart healthy.
As a part of the research, participants were given a 48-gram bar of dark chocolate at the start of an experiment and then went to eat a piece of dark chocolate every two hours. They remained awake for several days, which proved that they had gained enough energy not to feel exhausted and sleepy.
Blood tests were conducted which revealed that the chocolate has influenced gene activity, leading to an increase in anti-inflammatory agents and which in turn increased cells to fight infections. This was followed by an EEG, wherein the gamma waves record suggested that the chocolate treat had positively impacted brain function, such as creativity and level of cognition for a couple of hours even after eating it.
Further Research On The Topic
Dr. Lee Berk intends to conduct a further research on this particular phenomenon to understand exactly, how much dark chocolate should one have in order to positively affect functioning of brain.

If you are on a mission to lose weight, the ketogenic diet or the keto diet is what most nutritionist will recommend. It is a diet that is low in carbohydrates. The idea behind this diet is to deprive the body of carbohydrates so that it produces ketones. The body enters a metabolic pathway, whereby fats stored in the liver are broken down to produce ketone bodies. This process of ketone synthesis is known as Ketogenesis. Thus, in the absence of carbohydrates, the body's energy requirements are met using the ketone bodies, a state referred to as Ketosis.
A person on a ketogenic diet should consume more of;
- Vegetables: Spinach, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, lettuce. Include green leafy and above the ground vegetables as they are low in carbohydrates.
- Fruits and berries: Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, avocados. Consume raspberries and blackberries in limited quantity.
- Walnuts, sunflower seeds, macadamia.
- Coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia oil.

- Vegetable oil, if used, should be cold compressed.

On a ketogenic diet, one should avoid;
- Fruits: Apples, oranges, bananas, mangoes.
- Vegetables: Potatoes, tomato, eggplants, mushrooms, yams.
- Honey, maple syrup.
- Cereals, wheat, corn, rice.
- Avoid processed polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and trans fats.
One needs to drink water at regular intervals of time. Physical activities like exercise, jogging, morning walks are a must.

PCOS, also known as the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition that affects women of reproductive age (usually between 12-45 years). True to its name, PCOS is a hormonal disorder characterized by the formation of cysts in the ovary (one or both the ovaries). Androgen, the male sex hormone is produced in small amounts by the ovary. In PCOS, there is an increased production of androgens. The levels of estrogen and progesterone (female sex hormones) also undergo alteration. All these hormonal imbalance affects the functioning of the ovary as well as the ovulation process (the eggs either don't mature or are not released from the ovary).
PCOS and Hair Loss
In the case of PCOS, in addition to the menstrual and fertility problem, many females also suffer from severe hair loss.
There are three phases in a hair growth cycle-
- Anagen, a phase where active hair growth takes place.
- Catagen, a phase indicative of the transitional growth of hair.
- Telogen or the resting phase characterized by shedding of hair.
In PCOS, there is an increased production of androgen or testosterone. The testosterone then gets converted to another hormone called the Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The DHT thus formed binds itself to the hair follicles. As a result of this, the hair follicles abruptly enters into the resting phase, characterized by hair loss. The DHT when it binds to the hair follicles is also known to affect the ability of the hair follicles to absorb the essential nutrients.The PCOS left untreated, this process gets repeated in each hair growth cycle with increased hair loss and hair thinning. The hair regrowth and regeneration also slows down, a condition termed as Androgenic Alopecia.
The PCOS also triggers an insulin resistance. As per a study by the University of Oulu in Finland, incidences of alopecia is higher in women with insulin resistance, resulting in hair loss.
Dietary Recommendation To Deal With PCOS-related Hair Loss
In PCOS, the DHT hormone binds to the hair follicle resulting in the hair loss. In addition to the medications and maintaining a healthy body weight, a proper diet can go a long way to reverse the damage, thereby controlling the hair loss. However, one needs to have patience as you cannot expect the diet to produce miraculous results within a day.
- Enrich your diet with green leafy vegetables. High fiber vegetables can help to deal with insulin resistance to a great extent.
- Lean proteins such as tofu, chicken, are healthy options.
- Foods with low glycemic index (such as non-starchy vegetables, quite a few fruits, lentils, peas, legumes, barley, to name a few) work wonders in the case of PCOS and the associated symptoms. It also helps to deal with insulin resistance and high glucose levels, one of the factors responsible for hair loss.
- The unhealthy foods options that should be avoided at all cost, include highly processed foods such as pastries, white bread, sugar, white potatoes.
- Avoid foods rich in simple sugars or those with a high glycemic value.
Food’s relation with depression is a complicated one. A person can suddenly lose appetite or become extremely voracious. Prepare frozen meals well in advance:
During depression, not many people feel the urge to cook a meal. The alternative, in this case, is to prepare as many meals as you can and freeze them for future consumption. Food items such as black beans, pasta and chicken can be cooked and stored in the refrigerator for quite a few days. Store the cooked food in as many jars as you have. This cooked items will act as a life saviour when you feel hungry, but do not feel like cooking.
Use fewer dishes:
Minimising the number of dishes will save your life. A lot of people lose the urge of cooking or eating healthy when they see a pile of undone dishes in the wash basin.
