Periodic paralysis is a group of disorders that are rare and often genetic. This condition is characterized by weakness or paralysis from common triggers such as cold, heat, high carbohydrate meals, not eating, stress or excitement and physical activity of any kind. The underlying cause for this condition is malfunctions in the ion channels in skeletal muscle cell membranes.
HOW IS PERIODIC PARALYSIS DIAGNOSED?
The disease is difficult to diagnose as the symptoms may indicate other conditions. About half of the people with this disease have migraine and this leads to wrong diagnosis. DNA testing and electromyography may help with the diagnosis.
HOW IS PERIODIC PARALYSIS TREATED?
Treatment of the periodic paralyses focuses on preventing further attacks and relieving acute symptoms. Avoiding carbohydrate-rich meals and strenuous exercise, and taking acetazolamide daily may prevent hypokalemic attacks. Attacks can be managed by drinking a potassium chloride oral solution. Eating carbohydrate-rich, low-potassium foods, and avoiding strenuous exercise and fasting, can help prevent hyperkalemic attacks. Dichlorphenamide may prevent attacks.
