Optic Neuritis is the inflammation of the optic nerve. This is the nerve that is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eyes to the brain. The common symptoms include pain and temporary vision loss. The condition typically affects one eye.
HOW IS OPTIC NEURITIS DIAGNOSED?
An eye exam and an examination known as ophthalmoscopy to check the eye and vision would be carried out by an ophthalmologist. A pupillary light reaction test to check the response of the eye to bright light could also be performed. Other tests such as blood test and MRI scans might be performed to rule out any other disorders.
HOW IS OPTIC NEURITIS TREATED?
Optic Neuritis usually gets better on its own. Steroid medications may sometimes be needed to reduce the associated inflammation in the optic nerve. Possible side effects from steroid treatment include weight gain, mood changes, stomach upset and insomnia.
DID YOU KNOW?
Most people are able to regain their normal vision within a year after this disorder.
