Ophthalmoplegia is a condition of the eyes which leads to paralysis of the eye muscles. The eyes have six muscles that hold it in place. The condition can affect a few or all of these six eye muscles. People with this condition will experience blurred or double vision and also have disability to move their eyes normally. There can also be difficulty in swallowing along with general muscle weakness.
HOW IS OPHTHALMOPLEGIA DIAGNOSED?
Ophthalmoplegia can be diagnosed by a physical examination of the eye performed by an ophthalmologist. MRI and CT scans could be performed to study the eye more closely. Blood test to rule out any other disorders causing similar symptoms could be recommended.
HOW IS OPHTHALMOPLEGIA TREATED?
Treatment is based on diagnosis. Children born with the condition tend to get accustomed over time. Adults with sudden onset ophthalmoplegia can be fitted for special glasses, or wear an eye patch to relieve double vision and help achieve normal vision.
DID YOU KNOW?
Ophthalmoplegia can be congenital and children born with this disorder might not even be aware of the problems with vision that they are experiencing.
