OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN CHILDREN
Obstructive sleep apnea in children is a condition when a child involuntarily stops and starts breathing during sleep. OSA is a common and serious condition that makes children have a restless night’s sleep. It can also be life threatening in some cases. The common symptoms in the child can be restless sleep, bedwetting, daytime sleepiness, heavy breathing and snoring while sleeping.

A paediatrician would carry out an interview with the parents regarding the sleep cycle of the child with questions pertaining to snoring and if they are a restless sleeper. A sleep study could be recommended for older children.
HOW IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN CHILDREN TREATED?
Treatment is based on the cause. If enlarged tonsils or adenoids are thought to be causing the apnea, the doctor will refer your child to an ear, nose, and throat doctor (ENT). A continuous positive airway pressure therapy is recommended in other cases.
