DRY EYE SYNDROME
The flow of tears is what provides constant lubrication and moisture for the eyes. This is done by the tear system which operates with a combination of oils, water, mucus, antibodies and special proteins. An imbalance in this system leads to dry eye syndrome which creates pain and sensitivity to light.
HOW IS DRY EYE SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
The various tests to diagnose dry eyes syndrome include:
• Visual acuity measurement
• Slit lamp exam
• Diagnostic staining of the cornea and tear film
• Measurement of tear film break-up time (TBUT)
• Measurement of rate of tear production (Schirmer's test)
• Measurement of concentration of tears (osmolality)
HOW IS DRY EYE SYNDROME TREATED?
The treatment will include the prescription of artificial tear drops and ointments as well as temporary punctal occlusion, which will seek to drain out the tear ducts. Non dissolving punctal plugs can also be used to increase the tear production levels.
