Double Inlet Left Ventricle is a congenital heart defect that can be found in every five out 100,000 new born babies, as per various medical studies. The first and major symptoms of this condition include an inability to feed properly due to breathlessness and subsequently, an inability to gain weight in a normal way.
HOW IS DOUBLE INLET LEFT VENTRICLE DIAGNOSED?
Tests to diagnose DILV may include:
• Chest x-ray
• Measurement of the electrical activity in the heart (electrocardiogram, or ECG)
• Passing a thin, flexible tube into the heart to examine the arteries (cardiac catheterization)
• Ultrasound exam of the heart (echocardiogram)
• Using magnets to create images of the heart (MRI)
HOW IS DOUBLE INLET LEFT VENTRICLE TREATED?
The treatment includes surgery to increase the blood flow and circulation into the lungs and through the rest of the body, which can be conducted within a few days of the baby’s birth. Subsequent procedures called the Bidirectional Glenn Shunt can be conducted after four to six months.
