Colic is a condition of fretfulness and persistent crying especially due to causes like a gas ridden stomach. It usually occurs in new born babies and infants. The babies may cry for up to three hours a day, every day for a period of close to three months. Also, the crying may happen at the same time every single day – usually around evening.
HOW IS COLIC DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is usually carried out by a paediatrician who will check all the vital signs of the baby with a physical examination to ensure that there is no other ailment or genetic disorder at play.
HOW IS COLIC TREATED?
In the case of severe colic in babies, treatment is done by administering gas-relief medications and probiotics. For other types of colic, appropriate treatment is required. In the case of colic due to kidney stones or gallstones, either medical management or surgical removal is followed.
