A bone fracture refers to the breakage of a bone due to various causes like falls, injuries, accidents or even conditions like osteoporosis which can make the bones brittle and susceptible to such problems. The various kinds of fractures include simple, compound, stress and hairline fractures. These fractures may cause swelling, pain, inability to move the affected limb, and even bleeding in case it is an open fracture.
HOW IS BONE FRACTURE DIAGNOSED?
The only way a physician can detect a fracture is by physical examination along with details of injury and laboratory tests which are bone scan of the affected area and bone X-ray or radiography.
HOW IS BONE FRACTURE TREATED?
The treatment for a bone fracture usually involves a plaster or plastic braces that will help in giving complete rest to the limb so that it may join together without any motion to hinder the process. The patient may also be administered pain killers.

Bone fracture, if untreated, can lead to more complications such as amputation of the organ/part itself.
A fracture is known to be a medical term, which defines a broken bone. As per research, bone fractures are very common among both adults and children, so much so, that on an average every individual suffers from at least 2 broken bones in his lifetime. Age is a primary determinant of a fracture. In case of children, they are more likely to suffer from a fracture, but healing is faster. For adults the fracture can pose to get complicated as bones become weaker with age, and the healing process slows down.
Fractures occur because of a great number of reasons, for instance- sports injuries, fall, accidents and osteoporosis. You may experience the following symptoms if you gave a broken bone-
• Unbearable pain
• In case of hand fracture or leg fracture, you may see a deformity of the limb
• Tenderness and bruising
• Numbness in the affected area
• Inability to move the affected area
When it comes to types of fractures, there are 4 primary ones-
1. Complete fractures- If you have a complete fracture, it means that the bone has completely broken either into 2 parts or even more.
2. Incomplete fractures- If you have an incomplete fracture, it means that the bone has cracked, but not broken completely.
3. Compound fractures- This type of fracture is also known as an open fracture, where the bone juts through the skin. This can prove to be a very serious injury.
4. Simple fractures- This type of fracture is also known as a closed fracture, where the bones breaks but is not seen through the skin.
Among various simple fractures, some common ones are-
Greenstick fracture- This incomplete fracture is quite common in children and generally results in a bent bone.
Transverse fracture- In this case the bone breaks at a right angle to its axis.
Oblique fracture- In this case the bone breaks at an angle to its axis.
Comminuted fracture- This type of fracture can result in complications, as the bone breaks into many fragments.
Impacted fracture- This type of fracture is also known as a fracture, common in children. In this case, the fractured ends of the bones drive into each other due to an impact.
Pathological fractures and stress fractures (a kind of hairline crack) are also very common. Pathological fractures generally occur in adults, as they are a result of diseases and disorders like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is known to be a condition, which leads to weak bones as it slowly thins the bone structure, as a result they tend to lose their strength. Bone cancer is another condition which can lead to Pathological fractures.
Depending on the location of the fracture, one can determine if it will heal completely or not. Clavicle fracture, patella fracture and humerus fracture are more complicated fractures, which have to be treated with care for effective healing.
