Acrodermatitis Enteropathica is the appearance of inflamed patches of scaly and dry skin around mouth, hands, anus, scalp and feet. It mainly occurs due to extreme deficiency of minerals like Zinc and also sometimes for congenital reasons. Children who stop breast milk before time are also victims of this disorder.
HOW IS ACRODERMATITIS ENTEROPATHICA DIAGNOSED?
The investigations can be done by Pediatrics through • Thorough examination of skin • Skin Biopsy • Zinc level checking in plasma or serum • Zinc level present in urine
HOW IS ACRODERMATITIS ENTEROPATHICA TREATED?
Treatment requires lifelong supplementation of zinc, typical oral dosage of zinc is 1-3mg/kg of zinc gluconate per day. Serum zinc levels need to be monitored once every 3-6 months. External application of warm compresses followed by application of petroleum jelly may help in re epithelialization of the eroded skin.
