The condition where the lung collapses is known as Pneumothorax. Here air leaks into the space between the lungs and the wall of the chest. It can be sudden or gradual. Symptoms here include sudden pain in the chest followed with rapid shortness of the breath. Alongside the patient would have gradual health deterioration followed with weight loss and fatigue issues.
HOW IS PNEUMOTHORAX DIAGNOSED?
A General Physician/Pulmonologist diagnoses Pneumothorax by conducting a physical examination, CT scan, thoracic ultrasound and chest radiograph.
HOW IS PNEUMOTHORAX TREATED?
The treatment for Pneumothorax is also dependent on the severity of the condition. In the milder forms of the disease, the doctor might put the patient on observation and arrange for oxygen to be supplied to the region. In more severe cases, a tube may be inserted to let the air out and permit the lung to expand. Only in the severest conditions surgery will have to be resorted to.
