    A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that patients of kidney disease go through in order to replace a non functioning kidney with a live one that is healthy and functions well. Other methods to treat this disease also include dialysis, which basically is an artificial way of doing what our kidneys are designed to do. When dialysis does not work, many doctors recommend a kidney transplant. A replacement or donated kidney can come from a living donor or a non-living donor. This new kidney will mostly work towards keeping the blood clean, which is a function that stops when the old and diseased kidneys fail.

    So, here's a list of five essential facts that you need to keep in mind if you are looking at a kidney transplant:

    1. Donors: While there are living and non-living donors, the doctor will have to ensure that your donor is someone who has no medical history of complications, kidney disease or any other medical condition like diabetes or hypertension. Also, the donor would have to have two proper functioning kidneys. Further, one of the most important factors is the blood group. The blood group of the donor and the patient must match for the transplant to be possible.

    2. Procedure: During the surgery, the patient will be under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the lower abdomen area and the blood vessels of the new kidney will be connected surgically with the vein and iliac artery of the patient. Thereafter, any excess fluid will be drained before wrapping up the surgery.

    3. Rejection: The patient's body may also reject the kidney. The immune system of the patient may mistake the new kidney as an attacking body and its natural defenses may work against it, which will lead to complications. For this, doctors usually prescribe immunosuppressant medicines that will help in preventing such an eventuality.

    4. Longevity: While a living donor's kidney may last longer, a non-living donor's kidney will not enjoy such a long life. In such cases, a second transplant can be conducted.

    5. Diet: After the transplant, the patient will be required to go through a number of measures like coughing to show that the lungs are clear, as well as administration of fluids and some amount of examination and dialysis. Also, the patient will have to have a special diet that includes raw fruits and vegetables, and plenty of non-fat dairy ingredients.

    Notice the strange smell wafting in your kitchen? It's not your food... it is your refrigerator! Fridge is often one of the last places on our home cleaning list. We like to keep things in our kitchen shining and spotless but the inside of the fridge is a different story all together. The entire contents have to be emptied and at least half a day has to be dedicated to scrubbing and cleaning all the hidden corners, needless to say putting everything back and planning your day around the activity. As boring as it may seem, it is an important chore that you need to undertake at least once a month. Why? Because other than food, your fridge may be hosting some unwanted guests that may cause a lot of health problems for your family. Have a look:

    1. Find out who hitched a ride into your fridge: Certain foods, like vegetables, chicken and meat which are not kept in a healthy environment when being sold can harbour some harmful bacteria. These will travel with your food into your fridge and even sometimes cause cross contamination. So give a good thought to what you are putting into your fridge to take your first step towards a healthy life.

    2. Find the long lost items: We often put canned foods in the fridge to use for a later day. A lot of these items come with months of shelf life before the expiry date. But sometimes they get pushed back a little too much and we fail to notice that they may have passed their expiry date before use. We often tend to take a 'sniff' and 'taste' test for such items and if they seem fine, we use them anyway. When an item crosses its expiry date, be sure to throw it out. If it doesn't then use your best judgment. When in doubt, throw it out. It may be an on-off case to cause a harmful reaction.

    3. Different foods different shelves: Your fridge is designed to hold different foods on different shelves. Raw meat and leftovers go on the bottom shelf, fruits and vegetables on top and cheese and canned items in the center. This allows them to stay closest to the temperature optimum for them.

    4. Covert your fridge into your diet ally: Mid night cravings for ice cream, cakes, and other comfort foods can wreck havoc on your diet and health. Start by cleaning out your fridge and let go of the things that can get you into health trouble. Re-stock your fridge with healthy items stored in an attractive manner. Cut carrot sticks, bright fruits, and healthy green salads all stored in snack-able portions will eventually make you reach out for them over other foods.

    5. Get your basics right: Your fridge should be under 40 F or 4 degrees. Give it a thorough cleaning every month with baking soda.

    Hypertension or High Blood Pressure (HBP) is a long-term or chronic health condition where the pressure of the flow of blood is always high in the arteries. High blood pressure can develop over many years and affects everyone at some point in life but if not treated for a very long time, it can escalate the risks of a number of cardiovascular problems and chronic kidney disorders.


    1. Primary Hypertension

    High blood pressure caused by genetic, prenatal or other natural causes like aging (people over 60 develop HBP) is known as primary hypertension.

    2. Secondary Hypertension

    Secondary hypertension is that which is caused due to specific conditions, like kidney disorders, lung disorders etc.


    Blood pressure depends on the amount of blood pumped by the heart and the radius of the blood vessels. The delicate balance can get disturbed due to a number of factors.

    Primary hypertension may be caused by genetic factors. There are 35 identified genetic loci related to blood pressure. Mutations in these can cause chronic HBP. Other factors like maternal smoking, deficiency of vitamin D, deficiency of calcium, insufficient breast milk consumption also increase the risk of HBP.

    Secondary hypertension is caused by a variety of conditions like hypothyroidism, hypothyroidism, nephritis, asthma, sleep apnea, depression, pregnancy etc. Overconsumption of caffeine, alcohol, sodium and illegal drugs may also be responsible for high blood pressure.


    Hypertension may not show any warning symptoms for several years while it continues to develop. A few tell-tale signs are frequent throbbing headaches, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, excessive sweating but these only occur when there is an extremely serious medical complication.

    Treatment and Prevention

    Hypertension is a common condition, especially after the age of 40. Medication may help control severely high blood pressure to an extent but certain lifestyle changes go a long way in both preventing and treating the disorder. Some of them are:

    1. Taking regular blood pressure readings after the age of 25. A normal blood pressure is not more than 120/80 mm Hg.
    2. Obesity causes hypertension. A normal Body Mass Index of 30kg/sq. m. is to be maintained.
    3. The daily diet should include at least 4 to 6 portions of fruits and vegetables
    4. Salt intake is to be limited
    5. Drinking and smoking are to be minimized
    6. Stress and burnout should be avoided

    Say GoodBye To Daytime Fatigue In 5 Unbeatable Ways

    There are times when despite sleeping the required number of hours at night, we are tired throughout the day, feeling drowsy and low on energy. This is fatigue and most of us have faced it from time to time. What is frustrating at such times is that one feels mentally and physically drained for no particular reason. It is advised not to let this feeling settle for too long. Instead, try the following to revive your energy.

    1. Avoid caffeine: When tired, a lot of us are in the habit of picking a mug of coffee. What we forget is that caffeine consumption for a long time can also be a reason behind the fatigue.
    If you are suffering from daytime fatigue, try to cut down on your caffeine intake. It stimulates the adrenal glands, so if you are a regular consumer you can feel exhausted. Once you are no longer addicted to caffeine, you will notice that you are feeling energetic throughout the day with no signs of fatigue.
    2. Breakfast protein: If you ask ten people randomly what they had for breakfast, almost all will say something with carbohydrate. We tend to include proteins in our other meals and not always in the first meal of the day. Carbohydrates get converted to glucose and cause sugar levels in the blood to rise. This gives instant energy, but doesn't last very long. By mid-morning, the sugar level dips, thus causing fatigue and lethargy. At this point, a lot of people look for yet another sugar rush. Instead, include proteins in your breakfast. Eggs, bacon, salmon, black gram and other foods high in protein should be included in the first meal of the day. When protein is teamed with carbohydrates, the blood sugar level remains stable over the day.
    3. Avoid alcohol: Not many people link the two, but if you are feeling fatigued or lethargic during the day, it may have to do with your alcohol consumption the night before. This is because the alcohol present in your system didn't allow you to sleep well for most parts of the night. So while you did sleep for full eight hours, you didn't sleep well.
    4. Sleep on time: Many young people stay awake till wee hours in the morning or sleep for only a few hours. Or even worse, they sleep during daytime. This rocks your biological clock in ways unimaginable. Your biological clock is used to responding to light and darkness. You body is supposed to be busy during the day and relaxed during the night. Staying indoors during the day, sleeping, is not a good idea. You body needs outdoor exposure at that time. If you are feeling drowsy or lethargic during the day, go for a short walk.
    5. Exercise: One needs to keep the body active to keep the mind alert. Early morning exercise, especially if it is outdoors, has a very positive effect on one’s mind. As a result, one feels energetic throughout the day and there is no sign of fatigue.
